I’m a teensy bit OCD and I noticed that the flash in my iPhone 8 isn’t centred in the window. I know this is breathtakingly petty, but this kind of thing drives me mad.

Is this normal? Or did the manufacturer misalign it?

Flash looks centered to me.

I don’t mean the hole for the flash. I mean the four little bulbs underneath the glass. It looks like they’ve slipped down a few mm.

Are you for real?

I wasn’t going to rise to the bait of this, but I’ve changed my mind.

During the 1982 Van Halen World Tour, the rider notoriously specified that the band required M&Ms but no brown ones.

This has often been misinterpreted as indicating the ridiculous demands of spoilt rock stars. In fact the band had a rather good reason for this stricture. They figured that if venues missed this detail, or ignored it, then what other — more serious — details might they miss or ignore.

Apple is famous for its attention to detail. The four bulbs in the flash in my phone look very off-centre to me. This might just be the way its designed, though I doubt it. Or it might indicate the phone has not been constructed properly. Given the fraction of a millimetre precision used in the manufacture of iPhones, this may indicate other components are not right either, leading to problems later on.

So it is not unreasonable to worry that if this part is wrong, what else — unseen — is wrong.

Nonetheless, I used a self-deprecating heading for this thread, and continued in that vein in my opening post.

Look mate im also very OCD, but your mobile is ok i guess. And even IF the bulps are 1mm off centre, there should be no interference with other components. Just use your mobile and have fun. Peace mate.

When you take pictures does the flash work? if so , ignore it.

I am OCD but even i'm not this bad , thank God.

I did once hear a story though of a guy called Bob, his LEDS were .2mm lower than they should be. He took a photo and melted his phone. true story. Don't be Bob, best take pictures with the flash off just in case.

I do see the bulb looks lower, not the hole. I don’t know if this is normal. I’d compare it to demo models in the store. If you are within your 14 day return period, I’d return it if it bothers you. It could affect the output to a small degree if not assembled as specified.

As a side note, thread title possibly applies to the majority of complaint threads on here.

I just looks like that due to the reflections in the LEDs lenses.

It's not actually misaligned. I've just checked mine and when holding the phone at different angles to the light, the LEDs do appear to move around. Yours is fine, as can be seen from the very feint crosshair that divides the flash into quarters...

I never cease to be amazed at the depth of inspection some iPhone users subject their phones to
I realize it is costly device, but honestly...
a car is a much more costly investment and I doubt any iPhone users open the trunk and tear up the carpet to check the seam welding on the body frame
or return it based on a speck of dust they see under the dashboard

The LEDs look fine but the excess glue on the top left corner would bother me, and I've returned a couple for this reason.

Out of curiosity, what's the production week of your iPhone 8?

To be honest I wouldn't be happy either if the LED's weren't dead centre (they are on my iPhone X). I would take it back and demand a replacement. These components are supposedly placed with perfect precision to +/- microns, so to be so misaligned that it can be discerned with the naked eye would be worrying for me.

If I were you I'd be more worried about the apparent glue residue on the round edge to the left of the lens.

Wow, I cant even see what the OP is describing.
I noticed the glue on the casing after you guys mentioned it but who really cares about those tiny insignificant things?
I wouldn't stress or bother replacing it, just enjoy your phone and stop examining and stressing over tiny imperfections.

Crazy. You would literally have to break out the magnifying glass to inspect the tiny flash and find a defect. I am beginning to think part of the high cost of Apple products is the frivolous return of perfectly fine items.

Mine are the same way on my 8+. But it is the lens that makes it look like they are downward. Adjust the phone to the light and you'll see 4 round circles very clearly - centered. But if there's light above you - it'll make it look like they're downward --- lay the phone flat on the desk and allow light straight down - seems to be spot on then. Same for you? Also, like other posters here - I'd be more worried about the misshapen glue on the top left. Though the photo is pretty grainy. Try a stronger light source.

You are absolutely right as I discovered earlier in the day.

I might be OCD, but I have a self-deprecating sense of humour. Those posters who are fighting over each other to criticise me might want to consider what issues they themselves have. The irresistible desire to poke fun at strangers may be indicative of a deeper issue.
