The irresistible desire to poke fun at strangers may be indicative of a deeper issue.

I just like to poke strangers - mostly I use my finger, but if there's a range issue I use a stick.

FWIW, the True Tone flash with the different fitler color on the upper/lower half of the lens definitely makes the underlying LED elements look a little misaligned, but I looked through some images of the flash, and they all look like that.

A misaligned flash was relatively common in the 7 Plus (some also didn't sit flush, see attached image if interested), but that one looks fine.

The glue around the glass wouldn't be acceptable in my book, though.

I don’t mean the hole for the flash. I mean the four little bulbs underneath the glass. It looks like they’ve slipped down a few mm.
[doublepost=1513598334][/doublepost]

I wasn’t going to rise to the bait of this, but I’ve changed my mind.

During the 1982 Van Halen World Tour, the rider notoriously specified that the band required M&Ms but no brown ones.

This has often been misinterpreted as indicating the ridiculous demands of spoilt rock stars. In fact the band had a rather good reason for this stricture. They figured that if venues missed this detail, or ignored it, then what other — more serious — details might they miss or ignore.

Apple is famous for its attention to detail. The four bulbs in the flash in my phone look very off-centre to me. This might just be the way its designed, though I doubt it. Or it might indicate the phone has not been constructed properly. Given the fraction of a millimetre precision used in the manufacture of iPhones, this may indicate other components are not right either, leading to problems later on.

So it is not unreasonable to worry that if this part is wrong, what else — unseen — is wrong.

Nonetheless, I used a self-deprecating heading for this thread, and continued in that vein in my opening post.

The Van Halen request had something documented with reasoning behind it.

it's not unreasonable to worry.

However, your post kinda makes you look like the guy told to pick out the brown M&M's.

I’m a teensy bit OCD and I noticed that the flash in my iPhone 8 isn’t centred in the window. I know this is breathtakingly petty, but this kind of thing drives me mad.

Is this normal? Or did the manufacturer misalign it?

I just looks like that due to the reflections in the LEDs lenses.

This^^

It's an illusion created by how the light refracts in there. Those 4 points of light you're noticing are a sort of "inverse highlight" (not a real term) caused by light entering the little domes of the LEDs and coming back out on the other side, so the highlights are showing you the bottom edge of the LEDs themselves. If you look carefully you can see that the lights themselves are lined up pretty well in the cutout.

I'm not sure what's worse- being this monumentally OCD, or not even fully understanding what it is you're complaining about. At least you seem somewhat self-aware. Given that, you really should take the next obvious step and seek professional help.

You are absolutely right as I discovered earlier in the day.

I might be OCD, but I have a self-deprecating sense of humour. Those posters who are fighting over each other to criticise me might want to consider what issues they themselves have. The irresistible desire to poke fun at strangers may be indicative of a deeper issue.

You gave the bullets....!

What did you think was going to happen?

I never cease to be amazed at the depth of inspection some iPhone users subject their phones to
I realize it is costly device, but honestly...
a car is a much more costly investment and I doubt any iPhone users open the trunk and tear up the carpet to check the seam welding on the body frame
or return it based on a speck of dust they see under the dashboard
ive returned 8 cars because there is a 1mm gap between the headlight and the hood. .5mm is what im looking for:confused:

If I pay $1000+ for a telephone, it better be flawless.

I am not going to start checking my devices for this. I have enough issues with them as it is!

Seriously though, why does it look so banged up? Is that just me?

See? Maybe it wasn’t constructed with Apple’s usual degree of attention to quality and detail.

Whichever, it’s going back.

The reality is, you paid for this item and it's up to your expectations or not. You made a decision is not up to your expectations and you're returning it, I don't fault you for that.

Thank you.

In fact, having understood the error I made with the flash, I’m keeping the phone.

Which is odd because the trolls who have fallen over each other to condemn me would have expected me to send the phone back because of the glue issue. But that doesn’t bother me because it’s barely noticeable and isn’t indicative of a deeper construction flaw.

Hanging in there, Matthew. You have my sympathy.

We hear that funny statement all the time.
Big deal you paid $1000 for something.
Nothing produced by the millions is ever perfect.
Its just a cellphone, not priceless jewelry or diamonds.
Use it and stop stressing over nothing.

Good points, and then there's this: how long will you keep it? I don't know what the average ownership period of a cellphone is (could probably Google that), but I'm pretty sure that among people who post here there are a lot that turn over every year or two. How perfect does it need to be? It's not like it's a family heirloom or something. :p
