my experience is the build quality has reached top level for the Macbook Pro since M3. However the screen still had microscratches one more than the other if you check with a flashlight, it is unacceptable . Gonna check the M4 soon how the screen quality is.

What causes the micro scratches on the screen?

No the screens are damaged from the factories.

I never knew about this. What is going on with Apple's quality control? Are these being manufactured in sewers?

I find this bad of quality control on such expensive devices an insult.

So I was checking with a flashlight on the screen and I just discovered a small short hairline scratch in the centre of my screen. Like 0.5cm long. Really considering exchanging it. This definitely came from the factory and not me. Garbage QC.

OP, MBair for the apparent win here. Only the photo editing use has much potential to need MBpro horses... and that would need to be some intensive editing, which most people do not do. If "photo editing" is working on one photo, either is going to be fine. If you are optimizing hundreds of photos at a time, you prob need MBpro, if not Mac Studio.

I'd add if you are doing serious photo editing you probably will be using a calibrated external monitor anyway.

Apple Store employees and Apple fans are never going to discuss Apple durability, unless it's gushing praise. So you'll get little in that topic to help drive this decision.

The issue with message boards is tehy are a small sample set, and problems tend to get amplified as people assume the small data set is representative of teh larger population. Apple has had issues over the year, such as the scissor keyboard, but every problem on a message bar dis a real problem.

To 5 guys who can chime in with their horror story of failed Macs, there's 5 counters that someone's Apple II is still kicking about 40 years later.

Mine still is.

Either Air or Pro will likely be durable enough to outlast how long you want to use them. Your stated usage is such that either Air or Pro should be fine for you. Some other more intense use objective in the future might tip the decision in favor or Pro... else "hot deals" for older Pros might make one more appealing than a newer Air.

The OP went for an M1 Pro, a good choice.

a contemporary car of lower spec/performance for example a Mercedes W126 500SEL whilst slower is much better screwed together. It's the top end model of what is considered to be one of the best cars ever made

The W126 may be well made, but having owned several Mercedes and driven more I'd say their build quality is not what it once was.

Told you. Should tell Apple about this by emailing them tcook@apple.com and fole a complaint on the apple feedback page.

When you first mentioned it, oops I was imagining something different. Like constant easy to see abrasive scratches everywhere. But now I see what you mean. How many units did you get that had hairline scratches on the screen?
I checked again and my scratch is like 2-3mm long.

Where did you buy your unit? Is it custom made? If so, where exactly did it ship from?

Hmmm. I just bought a 16" M4 Pro (and a Windows laptop) this week. Both are fine machines and do what I need them and want them to do. I put them in cases. Never thought of putting all my weight on either of them. What if they didn't hold and you broke them? Would you blame Apple for that conduct?

I baby my machines, not masacree them.

Air would suit my uses fine but the Pro is simply nicer and I love the nano-texture display. I also just upgraded to the M4 Pro from a 2018 Intel MBP, and plan to keep this machine for at least 5 years. If you have the means, go for the machine you're drawn to.

Mine came in. Also had two small dents. Returning it.

I’ve owned mine for almost a week now. Yesterday the power button bottomed out and did not come back up. It still works, but is stuck as if being depressed all the time. Going to return it but I got it at Best Buy and they don’t have more in stock right now.

Truly bummed because other than this, the machine is awesome.

Yes dents. It is like if someone pushed a needle against the screen. its that tiny.

Apple's quality control has really gone downhill over the years. We shouldn't have to fully inspect brand new devices with a flashlight out of the box.

I don't do this with the other laptops I buy. I mean I'll stick check it for damage and dead pixels. But not to the extent with Macs of sticking a flashlight 2 inches to the screen.

I was cleaning my screen and was using my flashlight and came across a 2" semi circle light scratch. This one is just unacceptable and I definitely did not do it. It's a perfect semi circle. I tried to buff it out but it didn't do anything. I will be exchanging this piece of garbage tomorrow at Best Buy. Thanks Apple for nothing.

Personally I would make a picture if possible and email tcook@apple.com and even file a feedback complaint on their website so they know about this.

A lot of people have been complaining about this since the new M-series which is three years.

Why is their QC so bad? I reserved the last M3 Pro in my city so this better be a good unit. Does Apple even take stuff like this seriously or do they ignore it?

Thanks for mentioning this, otherwise I would have never checked the screen with a flashlight,

No problem. You pay a lot of money and Apple promotes this as premium products. But honestly, a cheap ACER does not have these scratches.

I dont know why, i already sent email to tcook@apple.com.
There are lot of reports online, people find out later when cleaning, they think they have damaged it themselves, but probably it was already like this out of factory.
