I've always wanted a custom desk. I have some time off right now so I designed this on Friday...

Interesting. I can't wait to see how it looks once it's completed. Not fully sure what you're planing on putting in it, but i like the concept so far.

That is awesome. I'd really like to do this one day. Now you just need a external monitor ;)

This is awesome. I wish I had the skills to custom build a desk. I'm afraid it would collapse on me. LOL Yours looks nice!

A 40" TV is being mounted above the desk when it's done and will be powered by a rack mounted hackintosh (unfortunately - I will not be able to afford a Mac Pro for a while and I like rack mount).

I've never built a damn thing in my life :p

I just wanted to try... it's actually pretty easy and cheap to do. Just measure 10 times and cut once!

Opinions?

Piano black or a semi gloss finish?

Great idea. I never even thought about that... Congrats on getting some balls to try a project like this to hold such expensive equipment. Although I'd rather do some things myself. Building a desk is out of my range. But I'm subscribing because i wan't to see how this ends up!

Piano black will need more maintenance but it'll be sooooooooo pretty!
Another piano black vote!

Very ncie, I was actually going to build my own desk this summer. Just waiting on it since we will be moving, and don't want to build something only to find it doesn't fit in the new house ;).

for mine I was thinking of making the top surface a big white board. Paint it white with a sheet of plexi glass over top. I don't know if your the type of person that likes to randomly write things down, but this may be an idea for you :)

Piano black is seeming popular... that's what I was leaning towards so piano black it is.

I installed the first underside support so far today.

Then I rough cut the first front cover panel (this is the bottom of the desk y'all are lookin' at)

I'm finishing the main cable shelf today which attaches to the back of that support.

the cable containment shelf is in place

From the bottom.

From the back.

Big enough to hold the main power brick (3 total are being built into the desk) and a whack of wires.

Here is how she sits for the evening. This is an extremely heavy desk... flipping it over was... fun.

Is that MDF your using?
If so painting MDF sort of sucks. It soaks up paint. Buy good primer, and lots of paint.. LOTS. I think it took me 2 or 3 cans to paint a 1ft box.

This is so, so true. It's fine if you're prepared for it but I was a bit tonked off to have to go back to the hardware store for yet more paint when I had already bought what seemed like an abundance. I only used one coat of primer, that was a mistake. So just a heads up.

Nice! If I could build my own desk, I would. I keep telling people, in the next life, I plan to be a carpenter.
