Merry christmas Mac rumors!

I've been a little busy the past couple days with Christmas related stuff. I'll be back to it tomorrow.

For an update though. My painter friend (Ben) stopped by and we talked about the painting of the desk. He thinks I'm well on my way to having a good finish. He's going to come back this week to help me finish it up here. He doesn't think we need to drag anything to the shop to paint. The oak side rails are finished though. It took 6 coats of clear varthane clear coat in the end but they're super shiny.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Once again, merry Christmas!

Sorry about the delay! Still waiting for the desk surface to arrive but it's time to try for piano black!

Quick wet sand and clear for the oak. It's gonna take a few more rounds of this before the edges are completely smooth but it's getting closer to what I want.

After this dries, I will wet sand and spray again then I will apply the clear.

I'm glad I'm not having someone else spray this. I felt like I was cheating.

I am unhappy with my attempt at gloss black. My painter friend is taking over this part next weekend. For now, they'll do.

I used some wood to mock up rails for the left rack.

Looks great so far….are you going to put a leather arm rest across the forward edge?

Yes. The entire front edge will be covered. I'm thinking of making the front edge a little thicker to be closer to the depth of the oak sides.

I'm really looking forward to this being done. Next up is to build bass traps and a matching isolation cabinet for a Mac Pro.

wow nice job! I could never make anything like this, I would have screwed up the measurements at the beginning and given up lol.

I thought the same thing before I started... it's easier to do that I thought.

Now it's time to make an arm rest!

Lets lay it out and detach the oak rails

Now I screwed the rail into the desk securing the padding a cover and began stapling the underside.

Reattach the oak and we're set!

It feels more finished now... so close.

I've been following this thread for a few days, and it's just getting better and better. That is going to be one amazing desk when you're finished. :)

Great job!!!

Looks great :)

You, my friend, are awesome

You are all far too kind. Looking back at building this thing, I think the part I like the best is knowing I can do it. I have spent most of my life saying I can't build for [INSERT] colourful metaphor [/INSERT].

:D

I highly recommend this kind of project! :D

Could you post some pics of it when it is done? I think it is just looking spectacular! Maybe I should hire you to build a desk for me! ;)
