I'm on a Mac mini (2009). It's the first and only IntelMac I ever bought

These M1's are not struggling base models, its a bit of a brain reset for many!

The current M1 is a great business machine and Lightroom works really well. I also like the convenience of USBC charging for travel. The only real minus is the ports, another two USBC ports on the right side would be perfect making desktop placement much more convienent. I predominantly use mine as a desktop plugged into the LG 5K monitor which powers the laptop and has an inbuilt USBC hub which solves the port issue.

I don't mind the Touch Bar, and wish Apple would double down and include one on their full sized bluetooth keyboard.

With Big Sur 11.2 I've had no bluetooth issues and the only issues have been with Safari occasionally stalling. Apart from that its been a uneventful affair, that is apart from my wife's new Dell Windows PC...

I'm sure these new models will sit on top of the current M1 models and will cost a lot more, and nobody cares about the wanky specs!

I was sorely tempted by the 2020 M1 mac pros, but I am going to wait for these.
Actually, my interest was piqued but being an early adopter of an architectural paradigm shift is almost never a good idea This is especially true when alternative options exist that can be expected to support existing and even new use cases for the next 2-3 years.

I see many having a love fest with m1.
Yup it’s fast, I see io issues with many.
From Bluetooth, to wide screen issues.
sleep and wake issues, and others yet It’s all the same problem “IO” somthing Apple does not have years of experience with, the iPhone nor the ipad needed IO.

also No bootcamp,

Also software that will not run on it.

also no support for a egpu.

also a zero hardware upgrade path.

I just got an intel Mac mini, it runs everything I need it to run, like 3 monitors, bootcamp, I can upgrade ram,
I see way to many issues right now with m1, for me it did not make sense. And m1 will not do what I need it to do on this day...I passed.

But yup it’s fast...

I would say early adopters of m1 will get exactly what all early adopters of tech get...and it’s never good.

the second or could be third Apple chip May be different, and it all could be just like the beta max....

it’s fast, will it scale up? Will
Io issues get sorted out?
Will developers jump on?

I have seen a few software companies claim their software runs on m1 as is, so thats good....ikmeadia being one of them, they will do no further development....Apple gave the lazy a way out, I am taking notes
On this....and will make future software purchases based on this.

contrary to the masses I say hold off on all Apple silicon and don’t get burned , as just about ever early adopter does...over and over, regardless of company.

I call that wisdom....

at least with an intel, you know what you are getting.
And the devil you know is better than the devil you do not..

but yup, m1 is fast.

just my take.

Apple's strategy:
  • Design good feature, sell it for a high price
  • Remove the feature, increase the price
  • Re-add the feature, increase the price
Original 15" MBP, Jan 2006: $1,999 low-end, $2,499 high-end ($2,600/$3,120 adjusted for inflation).
Current 16" MBP, Nov 2019: $2,399 low-end, $2,799 high-end.

Guess you got 'em.

I could just never deal with a 13" machine. I can see how some people might be okay with 14, but 13 is just too small (and underpowered).

Waiting is a seriously good choice-- at least 50% more horsepower on these things!

Be thankful Macrumors is looking out for you. They are definitely saving you $$$. This article is very helpful for others. Who wants to feel ripped off after spending thousands of dollars? Not me.

We are still waiting for $1400.00 stimulus check over here... SMH
If you're waiting on a stimulus check, you probably shouldn't be buying a new Mac..

For all mockup-graphics folks who haven't noticed yet: MagSafe is now a magnetic circle, not a pin connector.

How are you "upgrading RAM?"

You haven't been able to upgrade the RAM on a MacBook Pro without surface mount soldering skills since the last 2012 model ceased production.

Few people need to run Bootcamp (or three monitors), so you're definitely not the typical user.

2020 Mac mini, I can indeed upgrade ram...
Go look, you are very much mistaken.
I said nothing about macbook pro...
That was an assumption you made..

many clearly run bootcamp , and that is exactly why it existed...another false assumption.

I am fairly well equipped to do smd work with both tools and knowledge, but that is besides the point...
I can surly read specs on a Mac mini ....
And comprehensive them...

Apple has produced a steady stream of crappy laptops since 2016. I've been waiting, and will still have to wait until the new MBP comes out to see any of their shameful design choices finally fixed.

You posted you got an intel in a thread about the MacBook Pro. I think his assumption was valid.

Sad but true.

The 16" was hopefully the first step in correcting them . . .

Yes, and this entire thread is about the MacBook Pro, and nowhere in your post did it say "Mac mini" at the time I responded.

It's even right in my post; your post used to say:

I just got an intel, it runs everything I need it to run, like 3 monitors, bootcamp, I can upgrade ram,

Now it says:

I just got an intel Mac mini, it runs everything I need it to run, like 3 monitors, bootcamp, I can upgrade ram,

You didn't specify what you meant by "Intel."

We have an M1 Macbook Air in the Family and from what I can tell all the fears above are without reason. The Macbook Air works just like my MBPs with Intel. Really great machine.

So m1 has bootcamp?
No ...
Can you run two monitors?
No...
Will studio one run ? Protools?
No and no....

nothing whatsoever to do with fear.

m1 does have many well documented shortcomings.....

The M1 is clearly and incredible leap and better than intel in many ways, its a perfect continuation of Apple's ethos of compromise on the rarely needed stuff to get better performance of the commonly needed.

However, I still want bootcamp, and it feels slightly too early to trust Rosetta2 for everything else.

As much as I would love magsafe, a 14" small-bezel screen, extra ports etc, I think overall, I'd prefer to have bootcamp, so I'll likely go with the 13" intel Macbook.

The other option is to wait and see, just in case an intel option comes out in the new design, but its sounding unlikely :(

But what if you want intel and your current macbook pro is from 2010? I care more now about legacy support and bootcamp than the performance bonus and battery life.
