We have no idea what it is and what it will look like. I personally think an extra port for charging and nothing else is nonsense. I would expect that it might be just USB-C with a very "interesting" connector that disconnects safely whatever angle you pull it. Hopefully licensing the plug for companies making charging hubs. So if you use it, you have one more free USB-C port.
Hope you're right.
I find the flexibility of having two multipurpose ports on each side perfect for a laptop. The Air, with ports only on one side, is less practical / flexible.

If Apple wants a good idea - why not make a convertible - Macbook pro (macos) by day, but with a keypress, you can change the device to "iPad mode" (ipad os) - where you can also detach the screen, and it's a garden variety iPad Pro.

I'd pay extra for that. I don't think it's that difficult of an engineering problem...
Much as I like the idea of needing one less device, don't understand how this would work in practice.
If you want decent battery life for the 13 or 14 inch screen, surely the weight distribution in laptop mode would be an issue?
But then I'm no engineer...

Glad I bought mine in mid 2020 so I could get the touch bar. I love the touch bar and it’s a shame they are removing it!
Mixed feelings.
Wish that Apple had been able to build it into an external keyboard - it's far from ideal having to change how one works between laptop and office.
Some feedback (haptic or whatever) would help too.
After two years I still can't get used to looking down and still sometimes touch it by mistake (hello Siri...)!

I just sold my 2017 15" MBP on craigslist (for $1300) in anticipation of a refresh since I'm exclusively working from home these days using my workstation.

Now is the time to unload your old Intel Mac's if you can (that is if you don't need it as a daily drivers).

I, unfortunately, upgraded my 2009 MBP in 2017...I HATE the touch bar and keyboard. I might just swallow my frugality and buy the 14in when it comes out. I mean the keyboard especially is just total trash on the 2017 model. You know what...typing this might have just led me to convince myself that I am for sure upgrading. Especially since I had to backspace 3 times due to the keyboard!!

I'll be looking to replace my current 13" MBP (a 2020) in 2023 and we'll see at that point whether Apple has sustained this over time (or not). If they haven't, well... there are always Thinkpads.

My sister just ordered one...

I tried to tell her to wait but she wasn't having it.

I'll be buying the 14" when released to replace my 2010 13" MBP.
lol

On a 2010 MBP here as well, so we really need the refresh. The M1 reviews got me excited so I've been tempted by the 13" MBA or MBP...now the possibility of slightly more screen real estate on a 14" made me do a hard rethink. Could be a game changer for me so would be difficult for me to buy until I see what happens with those.

We've waited this long!

Yes..because a second gen will never be superseded by a third, and the blazing fast M1 will become slow clunky, unsupported and redundant the second the new MBP is released, as if Mac OS has never worked on older hardware ... 🙄
There is a third, but the difference between 1 and 2 tends to be much bigger than the difference between 2 and 3. 1 is the first time they test the waters with real customers. To name a few of Apple's examples:

iPhone OS 1 -> 2 with App Store
iPhone 1 -> 3G
iPad 1 -> 2 w/ retina display
og MacBook Air that sucked and hardly anyone even remembers -> gen 2, a lot better and no fan, popular
og Intel Macs that were 32-bit and soon lost support due to that -> gen 2 64-bit Intel Macs
og 2012 retina MBP with poor battery life and major unreliability (I had 5), niche compared to the non-retina ones -> 2013 ones with every issue fixed that were more widely used and still hold up today

My 2017 MacBook Pro is stil sufficiënt for me..

Those Apple silicon Macs are interesting and fast, but it’s more a “nice to have” than a need.

If the 2021 models are really nice, I might be tempted to get one. :)

That does rather beg the question what you're doing on MacRumours! Not that you're not welcome! :)
That same question can also be applied to people that come here to just to rant about Apple products and have zero interest in buying any, while furthermore stating that they are buying a Windows PC.

Also I hope you realize MacRUMORS doesn't only talk about RUMORS. There are help threads here too. I've helped a lot of people with issues. Look beyond the word rumors.

It’s a Mac, you cannot compare it to an iPhone.

Haptic feedback is possible to turn on. Apple just opt not to have it on by default. Apples lack to support TochBar is bizard. There are apps that turn haptic feedback on.

Many people don`t make any reserch on how to use or customise the TouchBar. You can add some stats on the place were Siri is now. That way you dont activate anything if you accidently push there. There is so many things you can add to the touch bar with 3rd party software that it`s insane. I recomend looking at some videos from youtube.

There is a common misconception that the majority hates the TouchBar. All polls I have seen are against this. There are many people that realy hate the TouchBar and are loud, but I belive(!) they are the minority. Most of the arguing points are not against TouchBar itself, but for lack of support. The funny thing is that most of the things they want can be added with 3rd party software or they just dont know how touchbar buttons work.

As you can guess I politely disagree on most of the points from the text. I think the current M1 laptop lineup is in a good value. There is always something new behind the corner, but I don`t think that there is anything deal breaking coming from the current rumours. As we saw with the M1, Apple would probably not reduce the price it they remove touchbar. Because $$$.

I personally belive (and hope) that there is a option in the future. From what I understand some people dont like that all the ”better” models come with the touchbar. @Apple what if the middle class MBP 14` has the touchbar. Cheap entry MBA and the more expensive 16` could come with traditional keybords. That way everyone has an option.

GPU?
16gb ram?
13” screen?
I did the same thing, I had a 2019 64gb 2tb MacBook Pro that I just replaced with a 13" M1 Pro with 16gb. It pretty much feels faster for everything I do, lighter, cooler (I had a cooling pad for my old one), quieter and the battery lasts longer. Love it!

I think it is wrong to create an article telling people not to get a Macbook right now, especially when talking about rumors.

MacRumors has been doing specifically this for as long as I can remember. It's an excellent resource and I wish it was something I could easily find for more sectors. Is it always going to be 100% accurate? Of course not, but it at least gives people some sort of a basis on which to make educated guesses as to whether or not it is a good time to purchase.

Many of us are sorely disappointed with Apple's insistence on "thin over everything" and unlike the Windows world, if you are realistically locked into the Apple ecosystem (i.e. schools with tremendous existing investment in Macs probably don't want to try and start mixing Windows systems in) you are stuck buying whatever Apple offers, even when what they offer blows chunks.

I think it's darn-near a public-service to let people know that there is are reasonable signs that Apple may finally be relenting and adding back the features people so badly desire. Unless you absolutely need one right now, it's a great time to wait it out and see what the next revision offers.

This is exactly what I’ve been fearing. Just bought an open box, 2-cycled 2019 MacBook Pro i9 32GB RAM 1TB 16” for about 3k. I figure I saved about 400-600 from a brand new one. I think at this point, it may perform better than these 1st gen ARM chips. I will be happy if my machine is able to hold on to 66% of what I paid and that when 2nd or 3rd gen chips come to market I’m able to upgrade and that what I have won’t be considered junk by then. Maybe someone here could offer their wisdom?

I have a chance to buy a MacBook Pro with some work money but was hoping theyd come with a refresh before the end of June when that money runs out. Wanted a 16” MacBook pro with new apple chips. But it’s okay. I’ll just get the current MacBook Pro and make sure it’s supped up with 16Ram and at least 1TB. Should last for a while and bonus that I’ll get one with the touchbar before they phase it out.

In apple apps such as Safari (filling out forms), iWork's apps which are more useful for the Touch Bar than MS office apps. Also paying or donating money via apple pay in Safari is a breeze with the Touch Bar. Without the Touch Bar I need to do it on my watch or iPhone and its a pain compared to the Touch Bar.

I create a lot of MS Word docs as I write allot and I just wish they made the Touch Bar more useful there. But I am starting to journal again and this time its in Pages which makes more use of the Touch Bar. Also Numbers makes use of the Touch Bar and I use this app for my budget over Excel.
Interesting, thank you for your input. I may have to try it more with Apple's app
