With my current job I can work from anywhere as long as there is Internet access. But it gets kinda lonely to be working at home all the time so coffee places are a good place to get some work done and also be around people. It's not because it's cool or anything like that, it's just a nice change of pace. Quick access to food and coffee is also a plus. :)

Before I got my MBP people used to spit on me in starbucks.
Now they love me `cos of my shiny Apple.

Seriously, anyone spending over a grand on a computer to use it as a fashion accessory is on the same level as Paris Hilton.
Sad, very sad.

I'd rather not degrade myself if that is the case. I'll be going to Starbucks with my IBM Thinkpad from now on.

Mac and coffee, trendy clothing = cool guy/gal

Thats about it.

And everyone wants to be that 'cool guy!'

The best part is the glowing Apple logo on the back of the Macbook. It screams 'look at me'

Except that the computer you use does not make you a "cool guy/gal." And the sort of person who thinks the computer they use *does* make them a cool guy/gal, was never a cool guy/gal to begin with.

Because Macs last longer on battery, and can wake / sleep almost instantly. No staring at windows booting for 5 minutes (or more). ;)

Its simple, and a few people have mentioned it, but several other people come up with off the wall responses (to be funny, I hope).

My theory, is that many people at the coffee shops are students. They usually have the time to sit down and work on stuff, where as a lot of the time, business people don't have that. Some do, but those usually are from companies that have the 'whatever it takes to get your work done,' type of companies, which are flexible and allow their employees to go to a coffee shop to work.

I have been to a couple of coffee shop type places with my mac (and with friends just hanging out), and there are a lot of macs. But usually, there are college students hiding behind them. Those students are the same ones that could be sitting in my classes with me, or in the library. I see a lot of Windows computers when around campus... But I see just as many or more macs.

The other possibility, as one person mentioned, is you notice them more now that you have a mac. I remember when people were 'prejudice' against macs to an extreme extent. For me, I like to see someone else that understand where I am coming from, in terms of the advantages over windows, crappy hardware retailers, etc. Its the same way with my iPhone. Once I got my phone, I started noticing people with iPhones more often.

I frequent various Starbucks in my travels a few times per day, between appointments.

I see both, perhaps it's my equal level of awareness, as I use a MacBook Pro and a ThinkPad for the cross platform work I do.

While I also utilize virtualization, there are times when there's no substitute for running natively.

As far as battery life, the new premium laptops like Macs & ThinkPads return very similar run times. I have 15" 2010 models of each and the difference is barely noticeable.

Apple is only a single manufacturer and have a minority market share, but you go to Starbucks and you are more likely too see a MacBook than Dells and Thinkpads combined. I seriously doubt it has much to do with better battery life ;)

Hate to ask, but what is with macbooks and starbucks?

Why do I see so many people with macbooks sitting at starbucks? I'd hate if it was because they want to be trendy..

Pretty much all the Coffee shops here in Toronto (except Tim Horton's) are MBP saturated. Unless you're a hardcore gamer why would you buy anything else.

Bullseye! It tastes burnt (probably because it is).:D

I seriously can't remember the last time I had a coffee from Starbucks that wasn't burnt. It's not even an exaggeration.

Now coffee in Italy, that's something completely different...

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but when I am in Starbucks with my Macbook it's because I want to drink coffee and use the Internet. Usually I am also on the road and sometimes I am away from home with some time to "kill" (waiting to pick someone up at the airport, etc.)

I don't go to Starbucks when I'm in my home area unless maybe the Internet goes out here and I need to access it. Usually I prefer my coffee and Internet at home :)

starbucks' coffee blends are very nice actually, but i prepare them at home in a cafetière.

the strangest thing is that you need to use more than for other coffee blends; for instance, i use 10 grams of ground coffee for every ~180ml of water. i think this is because starbucks tends to use 100% arabica beans and no robusta beans for body. the coffee produced is very aromatic but lacks depth...

No idea... also, Starbucks isn't as terrible as people say. All US brewed coffee is terrible...

Now before you proceed to flame me, here is why: I'm Honduran, we take our coffee much more bolder and stronger than you guys. For us, your coffee is just colored and sugared water.

Don't believe me? Go down to one of the Central American countries try it yourself. Don't go to Mexico for coffee, they are starting to water down theirs as well.

The only good coffee in the US straight out is Kona Coffee, simple.

LMAO … so true. If I goto Starbucks its because of my girlfriend or its in the same Telus building at work & thus its Tea for me really; but that Tao maybe the new trend (rolleyes).

I prefer Hot Chocolate Second Cup style or Timothy's Xmas Cinnamon Cocoa … hmmmmm.

Starbucks and Apple have a very similar business plan. They go for a demographic that has disposable income.

I'd say half of the people that are in Starbucks using MBP's are creative and both go together, others are just someone with money that want to fit in with those that see Apple's, others don't have the money, but want to "fit in."

Furthermore, my mom is living paycheck to paycheck, but when I convinced her to buy a new i5 MBP, she bought it. Now, she hits up Starbucks and McDonalds (free wi-fi) every day on her way to work.

I've been in a Starbucks once.. was buying a coffee for a friend. I suppose if you're not at work and want to publicly use your computer or something for the sake of being around other people, more power to you!

I guess.. maybe Mac users are more lonesome? I'm not saying it's a bad thing! If I didn't have a dozen places to hang out on campus at my college, I'd do it.
