I fully agree with you.

Aspyr is, beside 'Blizzard', one of a few left Mac publisher that have in constrast to EA eg. the will as well as the know-how and the vim to port games to Mac. Still !

Aspyr has brought us many great games to Mac OS X with some lovely details like Mac specific features („connect to IP …” in the Services-Menu for 'Call of Duty' eg.) and easier installations (one folder needs to be copied instead of an whole bunch of files or an crappy installer without deinstall-function; one DVD instead of many CD's - [have you ever installed 'Battlefield 1942 Deluxe Edition' on pc ? There are 4 damn of it! An nice changing orgy during installation … ]).

And they makes it easy as pie to remove it - just mark the folder and hit ⌘⌫. That's it. Should it be necessary. Hit ⇧⌘⌫ and it will die in the hell of damned bytes. :apple:

But hey … They have one outstanding characteristic - The port ! :D

They don't cider games just like EA - they really port ! :D
I wouldn't use these horrible "ports" of 'Need for Speed: Carbon', 'Harry Potter', 'Command & Conquer 3', 'Battlefield 2142', 'Tiger Woods 2008', 'Madden NFL 2008' and how they all are named … even if i would get it for free.

To call these games as an port is an insult to all the coders they really port.
Even an "spare-time hacker" can do this job - but even better! / - not that i appreciate this work would be easy. ;)

There was many cidered releases from many coders out there for Battlefield 2 eg. that was more stable, has lower cpu usage, got more frames on screen and was even smaller than the offical products from EA - even before that poorly things (from EA) come out …

That's why the offical releases are shopkeeper and absolutely slow seller;
They are slow, need incredible amount of hard disk space and much cpu time.
That is the decisive point. :D

So, to get angry in this things with Aspyr because they has this specs on Call of Duty 4 …
That's just nearsightedly - cautiously couched.
It is an port. No more and no less.
That is the operative point on Aspyr. They port ! :p

We should really be thankful for this work of Aspyr. :)

Aspyr is cool. Point.Off.Finish.

If there are any misspellings above, i don't care about - and you even schould do too.
I'm from germany, speak no english and use just g+ and Brian 2.0 final …
Okay, the for-latter one is just a bit lied …
:D

No I won't be happy. I'm sick of payign top dollar for CRAPPY ports. Have you played ET:QW. It runs like crap on my top of the line May 08 MBP. And I'm not the only one (just check the forums). Then they do ridiculous things like force DRM (insert disc) on games that dont require it for Windows or even Linux for chris'sakes. Come on man. I agree that any bit of Mac gaming is good but I'm getting so fed up with Aspyr's weird decisions when it comes to games.

Thank god Mac Soft is brigning UT3 and they apparently have a good rep, UT3 will open up the gateway that Aspyr has failed to do. And as always, praise Blizz for doing it right.

Okay, I was about to pre-order Call of Duty 4 from Amazon.com today.

I noticed one of the things before I ordered on the page mentioned:
"NOTICE: This game is not supported on volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive)."

Now my drive is formatted as:
Picture2-8.png

So I was worried that is was not going to work and I did not pre-order, however I noticed that there are a few different types of Mac OS Extended:
Picture1-20.png

One of them being a Case Sensitive option.

Does this mean that my format of Mac OS Extended will run this game because my current format is not listed as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive)...

I can run this game right??

No, you couldn't run this game.
Your actually filesystem is as you told "Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

You would must reformat your startup drive* to play this game if you buy it.

*
I strongly suppose that the game would not work if the startup drive has an another format even if the game itself is installed on another one [that rightly meet # (Case Sensitive)], to avoid an reformat of the startup drive [as in your case e.g.].

Even if you could afford it to circumvent the automated routines of the install program [whereas i strongly assume that they exist], that require an drive with an 'Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)' file-system to prevent an installation on an drive that don't meet these format [since it certainly would not work], the game wouldn't run.

That above assumption based on my guess that the dev's have just written an handler that uses the origin files [from the windows-plattform game] "like" ! cider - with the difference that cider is just the windows binary executable that are realtime-translatet into macintosh conform code that are executable.

If it would be so then that's the cause why the game need this file system - the first one with this requirements.

That would further mean that the Mac-Handler just process all these scripts and therefore all bindings of the game and the engine itself.
This reason [if it would surely be] produce the need on an file system that can handle case-sensitive files.
On windows exist some possibilities through script languages to attach files without knowing the exact name of the file -- absolute & relative. ;)

It would be easier to use this case.
Elsewise the developer must edit every file or script that contains anything to handle files.

That results in longer developement time - in significant longer time.
The fact, that Call of Duty has been portet in an quite short duration let the possibility of this case really appear.

Possible or not - Fact or rumour … :)

Truly, that's what i think about. ;-)

Thanks for the reply... but the Requirements say, that this game IS NOT supported on the CASE SENSITIVE format. I am nor running the CASE SENSITIVE format.

I actually filed a support ticket asking this as well, and I got the reply of:

Thank you for contacting Aspyr Tech Support!

It should work just fine on Mac OS Extended. At the moment I can't give out any extra information than what is posted on our website.

Have a great day!

Aspyr Tech Support

So I am assuming that it would work as Aspyr said it would..... but you said it wouldn't....now I am confused...

Pre Order

So how does that work if you buy Cod 4 from Amazon? Does that mean the game will arrive at my doorstep September 22nd? Or does that mean I will have to wait for the item to ship on September 22nd and be at the mercy of the USPS?
There's nowhere to get Mac games around here and I'm in NY ***** C! Seriously, I even contacted local game stores and Mac shops and no one will let me pre-order. Who knows if the game will even make it to an Apple store. Their game section is horrendous, I think we had more games under PPC. I guess it'll be MarioKart and Zelda for me. Wii!As far as specs, as long as you didn't choose the CASE SENSITIVE option you'll be fine.
Also, does anyone know why BootCamp won't work with an ATA drive mounted in the spare CD/DVD tray on a MacPro?

I have an early 2008 iMac (24" - 2.8Ghz Core2Duo, 4Gb of RAM, 256Mb ATI Radeon HD2600 Pro). Anyone have this configuration and, if so, how does COD4 run and at which resolution (if it ran perfectly at 1280x800, I'd be very happy).

My friend has almost the same Mac and runs on 1024, med-to-low settings in order to get 60+ FPS in multiplayer. You cad definitely up some settings and it shouldn't drop below 40.

I play mine on a 9400m at 1280x800. Textures, antroscopic filtering, corpses, and models maxed and everything else off, and it runs without a hitch.

this isn't a Cider port right? I know EA used Cider to port both Spore and Battlefield 2142. Spore runs ok on medium/high at 1280x800, but Battlefield 2142 runs terribly at any setting. I don't want to spend $50 on something that won't run decently at medium settings.
