I already am planning to upgrade my 12.9 Pro to have a Cellular model again, but I'm holding for the M2 lest Apple screws me over twice a la A12Z not getting most of the upcoming iPadOS 16 features on a 2-year old chip.

Side Note:
The A12Z chip is only 2 years old. It came out in 2020. The A12X chip came out in 2018. They are not the exact same chip, no matter how many people claim otherwise.
Like it or not, the A12Z is literally just an A12X with an extra GPU core. Just because Apple released it on a later date, doesn't make it an entirely new chip. And looking at how Apple provide support, I'd expect Apple to drop support for both A12X and A12Z at the same time despite the 2 year release gap.

Though one big difference is that A12Z has 6GB of RAM, A12X for most capacities have 4GB, RAM can be a factor here, but who knows maybe you could be right

Wow - what a typical MR comment. Someone likes an iPadOS feature that is polarising (for another inexplicable reason), and they’re essentially insulted for it. Incredibly toxic place.
Well, I read the OP’s post as a bit of hubris as well. The thread title is literally called “Calling all A12 iPad Pros” who cannot use Stage Manager. That feels a bit of an immature “in your face” type post. There are far more A12X/Z iPad Pro users on here than M1 iPad users. I have an M1 12.9 iPad Pro and yes Stage Manager is cool, but there’s no way I’d dump my 2020 iPad Pro to get an M1 just for that.

The OP is already off to new horizons praising that not yet announced AR headset will be incredible, because you know, this is Apple.

Oh, have I mentioned that the very same person just described Apple Music as breathtaking? 😂😂😂

IMO, I didn’t see the post as immature.

Granted, they could have changed the title to where it only targeted M1 iPad Pro users… but the OP wanted to share his experience with Stage Manager. If someone was to upgrade from a device and explain a specific feature was worth the upgrade why do we have to call them out on it.

And as I’ve mention before… we don’t have to disagree with the OP, if people don’t think they would upgrade to use that feature then so be it. But if you asked me, when I had the 2018 iPad Pro… I would have upgrade to get an M1 for the feature. But not only will I have that feature… I’ll get external monitor support and display scaling as well.

I feel the conversation has been really skewed by FOMO.
I think you hit the head on the nail here. Plus, the pre-M1 iPads not getting Stage Manager topics (as well as the iPhone 7 getting dropped and the Apple Watch Series 3) were a proxy for people upset about the 2016 Macs getting dropped in the upcoming macOS release.

Never mind that Apple has dropped support for Macs newer than that before, usually right around the time of a hardware transition. The most recent 68k Macs when Apple released Mac OS 8.5 were just over 3 years old (8.5 dropped all support for 68k). Snow Leopard dropped support for Macs as recent as four years old (top of the line PPC Macs that had been supported under Leopard. Mountain Lion dropped support for Macs that couldn’t boot into the 64-bit kernel (some of which were as recent as four years old). Mac OS X 10.0 (which dropped support for so called Old World ROM based Macs) dropped support for almost all models older than four years old (the two Power Macintosh G3 towers Apple launched in 1997 were the only older Macs officially supported by Mac OS X 10.0). If anything, Apple is taking this transition slower than most of their previous transitions, if they’re just now dropping six year old Macs!

(And yes, Apple has been through quite a few transitions over the years. I didn’t even bother with the color or 24-bit clean to 32-bit clean memory transitions of the 68k era.)

Maybe the 6GB 2020 will get something better down the line but I’m fine with losing out on stage manager. I’ll upgrade when I feel like it. Want a mini with 120 or 90 hz more than another 12.9

Agreed. I don’t see the post as immature or inflammatory either, but I guess how it’s received boils down to whether the individual reader has an A12 iPad Pro and is looking at upgrading it later this year (in which case it may further reinforce his decision to do so) or is sore that it will not be getting stage manager (in which case it may be interpreted as pouring salt on the wound).

the only difference was the extra gpu core in the A12Z.

"Given the similarities in performance and the minor letter tweak in the A12Z vs. the A12X, it appears the new chip is a re-binned version of the A12X with an extra GPU core enabled."

Stage Manager is really awesome.

I'd never go back to the old way of multitasking.

Honestly once you experience this paradigm shift in truly frictionless mobile computing, you'll upgrade to M1.
Yes, that's what Apple wants you to do ^^

Strange how OP hasn’t returned to the thread…

I’m writing this on my 2018 iPad Pro with A12X running the iPadOS 16 beta. I can still plug it in to a monitor and get mirroring to work as it always has on my iPad Pro. Would Stage Manager be nice to have, yes it would. Is it necessary to upgrade to a m1 iPad Pro, no. If anything, I would say iPadOS 16 feels slightly faster than iPadOS 15.
