Tell them to STOP smoking around you. Isn't that like abuse? (depending on how old you are) They're gonna #^$@ you up.

Anyway, good luck getting them to quit/stop smoking by you.

YES, it is abuse if they are smoking around you if you are under the legal age, and I believe you can still take them to court for smoking in the household as long as you are in it if you are above legal age...

Trust me, you don't want asthma. My mom not only smoked when she was pregnant with me, but when I was young. I have developed really bad asthma and it seems to get worse every year. It is hard for me to walk a freaking flight of steps going up three floors. Just use a coffee stirring straw, the "double barrel" ones like you see at McDonalds. Walk around and do day to day activities with only breathing through that, that is how bad it can get. I think I'm at the level of a full size drinking straw, which means if you breath only through a regular sized drinking straw during your day, that is how I breath all the time.

Medical bills for patients with asthma don't run cheap. Tell them how much some of the "everyday" medication costs and see what they think. I don't talk to my mom much anymore, she is all about herself.

definitely can't be good for them.

My mac book pro is totally discoloured around the fan outlet. Sorry for the bad pic, it was taken on my phone and makes it look better than it really is:eek:

I might get very pissed in that situation. Of course I don't know your family or how they respond to you. I would scream that they should ''shut the **** up with their smoke''...

Tell them your health decreases and you can feel it (a bit of bluffing ain't bad for your own healthy, is it?) and that they should buy you a new iMac (they can have the old one or sell it ;) ), stop smoking in the room your iMac is and stop smoking around you. Or just smoke outside or in only ONE room...

They should at least do that, shouldn't they?

Smoke affects everything

Hi, if you smoke around any hardware it's going to clog it, its the TAR in the smoke, this is why smokers ceilings and curtains turn yellow, the same will happen to your MAC, and your lungs. ship'em outside for their smoking.

To the original poster: The computer is the least of your worries. For as long as you've lived, you've probably been exposed to secondhand smoke. I haven't checked this with the internet, but I believe secondhand smoke kills 500,000 a year. And don't forget how many people it does other stuff to. Here is New York there used to be commercials quite frequently about it. One was a 6 year old saying, "I smoke X packs of cigarettes a day." It then showed something about secondhand smoke.

Smoking shouldn't be legal in public. I should not have to be exposed to people smoking on places like streets. Smokers are free to kill themselves if they decide to get addicted to tobacco. Please don't kill me. If there is anything that is shown to be most deadly and brought upon oneself, it must be smoking. Are the literally black lungs taken out of dead smokers not enough?

Sorry for the rant. I have asthma.

P.S. To the person that smokes outside their house so as not to harm your cat: I wish every smoker was like you. You cat probably thanks you everyday.

Legal issues aside here - back in my first year at University, my room was pretty much hot boxed most days. So much grud ended up on the screen (easily wipe-able) however I didn't think about the grud building up on the fans. My GPU died in early October this year, and I was curious as to know what state my fans were in because since the start of this year, they made a whining noise (almost like a hoover). I found out that my fans were pretty messy and the air flow was poor because of that (hence why my fans used to come on all the time, even when I did nothing).

Moral of the story - smoke away as long as your under warranty ;)

Smoking in the house

Smoking in the house or car is not good, at all....
The smoke does spread thru-out the house over time and will start to dis-colour everything.
Of course, the more people and how often they smoke will be the big factor.
Took a part my in-laws system (they all smoke over there), OMG, gross and smelly.
If you're going to blow the system out with compressed air, take it outside and do it.

can you link me to where you read this?
A quick google brings up some the stats;

438,000 premature deaths per year in the US alone;

Over 5 million premature deaths worldwide.

Unfortunately a significant proportion of those aren't smokers themselves and are exposed passively :(. And a large mortality burden is still experienced by developing countries :(.

edit: Let me know if you'd like links to the original research articles. I'm trying to have a pubmed free week.

Thanks for the links, I think that especially when talking about important issues its good to have actual sources, rather than forum opinion.

Those results are very startling indeed, although i would also like to know if there are any comparisons between the effect of passive smoking say on the pavement of a major road, compared to the traffic fumes inhaled on that same road.

Anyone have any links?

Clarification on the statistics... it says 50,000ish second-hand related deaths, not 500,000ish. That number is primarily smokers.

Almost all of that 50,000 is heart disease. Which has many causes.

I am totally a walking talking hypocrite. I know this. Mainly it is I care about my cat's health more then mine. The way I see it I am making this choice, bit the cat, or the equipment are not. btw. I have a full recording studio and a collection of vintage keyboards, so it is more then just a computer that I worry about.;)

Wow, that is exactly why I smoke outside too and everyone can call me a hypocrite but I enjoy smoking. I don't smoke during the day but I definitely do in the evenings - weather permitting. I do enjoy my clove cigarettes I won't smoke inside because I have kitty cats and they don't need to be subjected to what I choose to subject myself to. ...and I also wouldn't ruin something I paid a lot of $$ for - including my house!

Gotta admit, I hate smoking. I hate the smell, et cetera...but Clove cigarettes can be very nice every once in a while :p

That said, I read a great quote from some random ******* in a smoker thread on nin.com, he said:

"I wonder if in 500 years, humans will still voluntarily **** themselves in the ass by inhaling **** into their lungs that tastes like ****, smells like ****, and costs a ******** of money." :D

I remember, ooh, about 15 years ago, taking apart a Mac IIfx which had lived in the house of a heavy smoker and it was the, at the time, worst thing I had ever experienced.

I took out the motherboard and I kid you not, I couldnt make out one single component on it. The sticky tar had attracted dust particles for many years and had created a matted 'fur' of hair, dust, and every other passing particle that the fan had blown over it.

For my own health and safety, I had to don protective clothing (a dust mask, eye protection, marigold gloves and a tyvek overcoat) to complete the job. Cleaning it was hell on earth and I eventually took the mobo outside and washed it in warm soapy water which worked a treat.

Put me off smoking forever.

"Imagine what your lungs must be like after a packet a day if thats what your computer had in it"...I remember telling the owner on his arrival

Ok seriously, cigarette smoke WILL NOT damage your Mac, period.

I recently gave up smoking, but having been on forty-a-day for many, many years I can vouch that cigarette smoke has never damaged any of my machines, nor has the smoke discoloured any part of them - inside or out.

Dust will clog up your Mac, not smoke. Sure, smoke will make it stink, but it won't clog it up. Oh, and for the record, you can get emphysema from dust particles in the air too, so just make sure your place is clean as well.

Gotta love how the alarmists and vehement anti-smokers come out of the woodwork to make sure commonsense is murdered. (oh and for the record, 9/10 people in my family die from smoking-related cancer, hence the reason I quit. So don't give me any crap about not knowing what it's like either).

My first home computer was a hand-me-down Mac. My wife smoked while using it. After a couple of months the thing stunk and the casing turned yellow. I don't know what it did to the inside.

Jesus. Way to repeat what's already been said, even though people are already irritated the anti-smoking brigade have descended on the thread.

In the first paragraph, you decreed that smoking should be illegal in public; I'm fairly sure you contradict yourself with the (my emphasis) emboldened text.

Awesome idea, by the way. You should then lobby for restriction of free speech, and the introduction of the stoning of women for spending time with men outside their family.

I'm literally shaking my head in exasperation just thinking about your post.
