att will not re-add the data plan......dont know why you guys are thinking this.. just change your imei in their system.

Listen changing IMEI's no longer does anything with AT&T. AT&T has spent a lot of time and money finding ways of researching whats being used on each phone line. As I stated before if you do not keep the data plan added to your plan at time of signing the contract you void your agreement you signed with both Apple and AT&T as the US exclusive carrier. As such AT&T can charge you full price for the phone on your credit card you use to pay for the phone, cancel the phone line and charge you an ETF, of which if you dont pay the remaining phone bill and ETF you hurt your credit with AT&T and most credit agencys.

Well that is the most extreeme situation. In most cases the system adds the data plan and then lets you know that it did. In the cases where you are trying to trick the system and dont keep the data plan on there, then your bill will be about $700-3000 in data charges. In that case you either add the data plan and we take care of the charges orrr you pay the bill and the plan still gets added on.

So do what you guys want.

ChaSSe I'm glad we still have some intelligence amongst the general public :D. It is exactly as you stated and what I posted was the most extreme scenario after 2-3 occurances of the same (fraudulant) activities have occured. I'm just trying to help someone out I dont want to see the little guy screwed by the big man.:p

Haha ;)

I think people are confused or I am just totally wrong. It sounds like the OP wanted to cancel the data after a month and than unlock the phone and use it on another network..I think that may be wrong though.

THAT would work though. He could cancel the whole plan after a month and continue to use the "other" phone he wanted to put the Sim into, unlock the iPHone, and use it on another network but that wouldn't make sense...as I"m sure the OP does not need two cell phones.

Just an idea though.

thanks for responses

yes my friend does not want to leave ATT just cancel the data

and for those who say the iphone is nothing without data, and to just get an ipod touch

he already has one, but he prefers to carry one device that will make calls and is a media player, rather than carrying two bulky things in his pocket

but is there a definitive answer for using the iphone unlocked on ATT without a data plan?

Whenever you use any type of transfer (data, voice, ect) your imei is permanently attached.

You were given a definitive answer. You just don't like the answer.

AT&T + iPhone = $30 data plan. It's the price to play with the iPhone, and it's how AT&T can make some money.

You can't always get what you want!

of course not everyone needs the data plan, but what I was saying is that it's neccesary if you want to be with AT&T

There's no need for all the lying.

He'll have to pay an early termination fee and the pro-rated amounts that they charge. It's not cheap.

Not true at all. I had 3g that was stolen, an additional line, after three months of buying. I bought a go phone , swaped the sim into it, called AT&T cancelled the data plan without issue. You contract is to keep the TN active.

Don't listen to these fools. Of course you can do it.

I did it with my 2G. I did it with my 3G. And now im doing it with my 3GS. Swap the sim cards, remove data and then swap it again.

Go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ and install the "Fake APN" (it will disable data).

Keep in mind that AT&T reserves the right to add the data plan in. However, to this date I have never received a single message nor have they ever added the data plan to any of my three iPhones. They are well aware, however that I am using an iPhone (as it is shown in my account).

Just don't try to add a cheaper or incorrect data plan, they will surely come down on you for that.

If I do not have a data plan, can I check incurred charges thru my account online? Would it show me like it does with minutes used? Cause I go into my data section and I can only see text messages and no media charges. Is this where you see if you incurred any data charges? Thanks

Yes, after the fact.

Yes you can cancel data plan, I just did it the second week after acquiring an iphone 3gs. They prorated that month and was getting credit two bills from when I cancel. Since you're not canceling the line he shouldn't see any charges. Now the second part as just using it with wifi, they might catch it or they might not. Im using one 3gs with the old data plan, $20. Been doing that since I cancel the data plan on my other line and switch the sims.

But why can't I see any data charges? I have been using the iphone 3g for couple of days, but I only get online thru wifi. Maybe their waiting for my next bill to make me a surprise? :D

It takes 72 hrs for the information to update, but you can check it by clicking MSG&data then clicking unbilled data.

Does anyone knows why my E icon started to showing up? I have been using the unlocked & jailbroken phone for last couple of days but there was not any E icons. Now it is showing up all of a sudden. I tried to get online using Edge but it ways you are not subscribed to any service. I only use it on wifi. Thanks

I feel like I am a broken record if you dont have the proper phone plan the phone will not work on AT&T network. AT&T knows regardless of what you do to try and trick the system which phone you are using. If you want to use the internet on AT&T network put it on the proper plan. If you are on a different carrier ask them if they recently changed the policies as to which plan you must currently have to use the Iphone data plan. Every carrier has their own rules and AT&T's is if you have the Iphone 3g/s you must pay the $30 a month regardless of if it is unlocked or not it's just how their system works.

Then what's the purpose of the ETF fee?

The purpose of the ETF fee is to dissuade you from cancelling the account entirely, before the full term of your contract has expired. If you change individual features on the account, such as switching rate plans, or turning off a data subscription, but keep the account itself active, there is no ETF.

However, uniquely for the iPhone, as long as any iPhone is hooked up to the account, AT&T's policy is that you must have an eligible data plan on the account. It is technologically possible (and it has been done on numerous occasions) to use the voice-only features of an iPhone without the data plan, but it would go against AT&T's policies.

If AT&T discovers such situations, AT&T reserves the right to correct the situation. ("Reserves the right" means that AT&T can, if they want to, choose to do nothing about it. But if they do choose to do something about it, they would be within their contractual rights to do so.) The contract spells out their sole contractually approved method of correcting the situation: they will automatically re-add the appropriate data plan to your account.

(edit: It appears that AT&T has modified their terms of service within the last couple of months, because the clause specifying mandatory data plans has been expanded. It used to uniquely identify the iPhone as having a mandatory data plan. Now it says the data plan is mandatory "for certain devices including iPhone and other designated Smartphones and PDA's".)

Of course, if you get rid of the iPhone and permanently switch back to a dumbphone, then the iPhone is no longer actively hooked up to the account. Therefore the data plan can be ditched, whilst maintaining the rest of the account, without an ETF.

Read mine.

Your answer is wrong. I have been without a data plan for 23 months now across all the iPhones and have never received a single email or text, nor has a plan ever been added to my account. Neither have I had any outrageous charges.

You must be one of the many, many, many ATT customer service grunts who have no idea as to what they are talking about.
