use a kb cover if your in a dusty dirty environment. If you anticipate moisture, spills etc. Consider removing the cover when done.
a cover might prevent heat from dissipating through the keyboard.

there might be several keyboard failure mechanisms.
At this point everything you hear is so blown up.

Beyond the dust, what about oil marks on the keyboard? I have a 13" 2013 and there are oil marks on the keys I often press. It also affected the anti-glare film on my screen.

I wipe the keyboard daily with a microfiber cloth to remove most of the finger oils, but unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to remove the stains on the keys once the oil marks have saturated into the matte paint in the keys. It happens to pretty much any keyboard I have ever used, and I keep my hands clean whenever typing on any computer.
