Hey! I was going to trade in my 13 PM 128gb for a 16PM (I was just waiting for the pre order date), but today I just saw that the trade in value went from 565 CAD to 440 CAD… what a bad news. Do you know where I could trade in my iPhone around the original trade in price :/ ? I’m in Montreal

https://gizmogrind.com/ca/ they give reasonable rates as well - as soon as the new iPhone is announced, everything will drop in value - because the 15 series will be akin to the 14 series - and as such, the 13 will drop significantly more as it's now 3 generations old.

It's normal for trade-in prices to fluctuate when new products are announced. You can always look at trading elsewhere or selling privately.

You can "Get Ready" (pre-preorder?) on the app now. Just did mine now.

Seems to be more streamlined than it was last year. You can even input your payment method (credit card, gift card, Affirm) as you go through the steps. Hopefully it actually saves, since many people in the past have had to enter all payment info from scratch during pre-order (and let's not talk about the Paybright issues from 2022 LoL)...

Did the get ready for pre order thing on Monday night. Now just waiting for Friday.

Trading in my 14PM for a 16PM and I’ll give affirm like $50 a month for the next two years lol.

Interesting that I already paid the tax to Affirm on Monday night when they approved my loan so I guess I’m technically locked into my choice for when I check out on Friday morning.

The way they set up the ‘get ready to pre order’ is almost like a pre pre order lol

Yeah if using affirm the loan is already setup and taxes on the full value of the iPhone taken when setting up your payment method during the get ready for pre order process. So my loan is set and just waiting for Apple to confirm the purchase on Friday morning.

I’ll be salty if there’s issues checking out on Friday morning since I technically already paid the tax portion to affirm lol

Interesting! Yeah it definitely seems like an actual pre-order. In the past you wouldn't get the loan set up until pre-order day. Hoping it goes smooth for you!

This method didn't work for me last time - so don't recall - but at checkout do you think you'll still be able to pick one up in store rather than delivery?

Isn't the laws saying that it should be applied before tax?
That’s how it works on, for instance, car trade ins but I’m not sure if there’s different tax treatment for other goods. Couple years ago I wound up cancelling my trade in because without the tax savings it wasn’t worth it.

This year I’m too lazy to sell privately so I’ll take the L.

The tax discussion comes up every year. Legally, you should only be charged tax on the net amount (New Phone Cost - Value of Old Phone) x Tax Rate Applied. Doesn't matter if it's a car, or a phone, as long as it's in the same transaction.

Prior to 2022, they charged tax correctly with trade-ins (can confirm this with my previous orders). Not sure what happened after that.

We'll see what happens this year, but maybe I'll finally get around to reporting them to the CRA.. LoL...

Apple is offering 490 CAD for my 13 PM in good condition. It has some little scratches around the charging port / bottom speakers (not deep).

Do you think I should go for it or could I get a lot more somewhere else ?

Do you know how long we need to wait before knowing that ? Should I go to an Apple Store tomorrow and ask ?

Don't waste your time. Apple Store employees are clueless and not trained in Canadian tax laws. Only way to find out is after you send in your trade-in and see what you've been credited.

It's probably best to sell privately, but trading in involves less headache.

I would like to trade in but in store because I’ve read bad reviews about Apple trade in online service

lol they still don’t tax correctly. I paid tax on the full value of the phone.

You can probably get more elsewhere but I’ve noticed lately it’s tougher to sell stuff online. They’re giving me $685 for my 14PM. I might be leaving like $100 or so on the table.

I've just talk with apple support chat, and it seems that (from what he is saying) trade in if applied after tax if ordered online.

If I go to the store, ask to buy the 16 PM with trade in, it should be applied before taxes (still from what he told me). I will try to do that the 20th :)

I went in store in 2022 due to this issue. Tax was being charged on the full amount in-store. When I kindly asked for a manager to look into it, they just kept saying they can't talk about taxes because of "personal information". Made no sense. Talking to Apple Store employees is like talking to a wall.

I doubt Apple Support chat (which is based in Texas) knows about how Canadian taxes work. There should be no difference between buying online and in-store. But we shall see what happens this year! 😄

I am leaving for a trip on the Monday after release. I remember in prior years it got delivered the following Monday or Tuseday so I would miss it. Is in store guaranteed for Friday, or is there a better option I should consider?
