YOU SAID YOU GOT A WARNING. Unlike you, all of us here can read. Many have pointed out that you said you received a warning, and for some reason, you back track and say that you didn't get one. We weren't born yesterday buddy.

Also under no circumstances, would someone with an IQ over 10, not have a backup of 5 years worth of contact data. For christ sake, I'm only 15 and I backup all of my contact data weekly to three different external HDDs, to a flash drive that I keep on my keychain, and to a DVD. I also update a hand written contact list every 6 months. I would think that a grown man would have the common sense to backup important data.

This is no one's fault but your own. I find it pretty pathetic that you tried to blame this on Apple. Also your attitude has been really piss-poor. No one in their right mind should expect any help from anyone when they act like a total jackass. You come here and insult members of this forum, when they try to help you, and we still try to help you. There's a line and you crossed it. And since you believe that you get to rate the abilities of software developers, why don't you go and try to write the code for a service that will rival MobileMe. I'll eat my hat if you even know how to write a "Hello World!" program.

Also, before you insult my intelligence by claiming that I can't read, you should learn to read yourself. Read the terms of service from MobileMe, and you will see what Apple defines as "synching."

LOL.
1. There are quite a few different messages. There is a very specific warning that says you will lose your contacts in location X. I didn't get that one. Go back and re-read.

2. I did have it backed up. It was backed up in my IPhone backup. If I lost my phone, it would always be on my IPhone backup. I don't think you really understand what happened before you so eloquently decided to chime in with your opinion.

3. Before I insult your intelligence? As opposed to what you wrote? Believe me, I would not dare insult your intelligence for more than one reason.
4. You seem to have some notion that Apple has somehow some perfect record of coding. Mobileme is a horrible product, people hate it, it's bad software, poor design and tons of flaws. This is one of them.

You did get a message that said that all of your data would be deleted. That would be enough to make sure I had a backup that the service was canceling doesn't have access to.
2. I did have it backed up. It was backed up in my IPhone backup. If I lost my phone, it would always be on my IPhone backup. I don't think you really understand what happened before you so eloquently decided to chime in with your opinion.

Oh I understand. You only kept an iPhone backup, cancelled your MobileMe trial, lost all of your data, and tried to blame it on everyone but yourself. It seems that you knew that iTunes only keeps the most recent backup of your phone. That would not be enough for most people. Most people would keep 5 years of data backed up on an external HDD. You didn't and you almost lost all of your data.
3. Before I insult your intelligence? As opposed to what you wrote? Believe me, I would not dare insult your intelligence for more than one reason.
I didn't insult your intelligence. You have demonstrated that you don't have much to insult. How have you proved this? By coming here acting like you are the king of the world and like we are your minions that have to deal with you insulting us, and still try to help you. People gave you suggestions, and you didn't like the suggestions that you were given so you decided to insult those who gave you the suggestion. Anyone with a brain knows that you don't go and treat people like a piece of crap that you stepped in when you need help from them.
4. You seem to have some notion that Apple has somehow some perfect record of coding. Mobileme is a horrible product, people hate it, it's bad software, poor design and tons of flaws. This is one of them.
Believe me, I know that MobileMe has flaws. I've been using .Mac/MobileMe for the past four years. But your problem was caused because of your own idiocy, not because of poor coding. At the very least, you should have stored your contacts in a program like Outlook.

Again. I did not and you obviosuly have not read what I wrote yet you still are pretending that you have. I only unsubscribed---you won't lose your messages just from just that step.

You really can't read and are pretendign you have read things you have not -worse I don't think you understand the various messages you can't get once you unsubscribe.....and take various other steps that can result in your data getting wiped in multiple locations.

You won't have that problem if you were running on a Mac dude. Get a Mac! :)

PS: I mean if you have a Mac, all data is stored on your Mac and mirrored on MobileMe. Nothing is lost if you cancelled MobileMe.

That is true. In the Mac IPhone backup you can also go back easily to prior backups. I do have a MBP from this April but I use Windows 7 on. Too much work stuff is there.

Please look at your original post, you stated that you received a message that said that all of your data on MobileMe would be deleted. Your contacts were on MobileMe, and your phone was set to synch with MobileMe. Apple's definition of synching is the following: A device that is set to synch with another device will reflect exactly what is on that other device.

In your case the two devices are your iPhone and the MobileMe server. The MobileMe server is the master device, your phone is supposed to match your MobileMe data. When you deleted all of your MobileMe data, your phone deleted all of it's contact data to match what was on MobileMe.

Had you had a backup besides your iPhone backup, you would never had this problem. People wouldn't have wasted their time trying to help you, and I wouldn't be point this out to you. This is your fault and only your fault.

You also didn't answer my question. Can you code a better service than MobileMe?

How about Apple stops trying to charge a hundred bucks for a crappy piece of malware? How about no matter what the user services agreement says, they take responsibility for it anyway?

The standard that somehow if I can't code it better, then I should not have the right to complain is the most moronic thing I have ever seen.

I have no problem with someone complaining about a service crashing, or suggesting new things for a service. But I do have a problems with someone saying that user error is the fault of the programers.

Also, calling MobileMe "malware" is {wrong}. Malware is a malicious program that infiltrates a device without the consent of the device's owner. You gave consent for MobileMe to access your phone, by allowing the two devices to synch. Suggesting that a company should take the blame for user error is {wrong}. Why should Apple say "It's our fault that you didn't read the terms of service, and that you didn't have a sufficient backup of your data."

These forums are pathetic.

Whenever people criticise Apple for hostile user features the mac fanboys jump in and start saying that Apple is always right, explaining the philosophy behind Apple's decisions; how it is more logical, and how users should go back to Windows if they don't like it.

Face it. The consumer is right. If people are having problems with Apple features due to user unfriendly syncing then don't explain how philosophically and theologically Jobs is right but accept that he is wrong in this instance.

One thing those windows users can do that you can't - find faults in their OS and try to improve them.

The OP's story changes from the get go and can do no wrong.

He figured a solution to his problem, and has yet to share the details.

I would suggest that we let this die and move on.

If I were you Id call apple again, try and get a more understanding employee. When you call just try and be calm and polite. Although I cant believe that you haven't backed up your contacts at some point over all these years. Im not trying to say this is your fault but what if the phone had been lost or stolen, or what if it broke?
You would be screwed if something like that happen, let this be a lesson to you to back up your stuff.

If it broke I'd have my backup of My Iphone.

got the contacts back without paying the 99 bucks to apple.

Actually I was pretty upfront with what happened.
No I didn't share the story of how I fixed it--I don't think this is actually a place where people help others so i doubt people care. It's where a bunch of apple fanboys find no fault in what Apple does--think all their software is perfectly designed and everything is the users fault. you wanted me to pay a hundred bucks for bad software as extortion to your God--Apple. ooohh aahh. Screw that.

No, they're not.

Good grief man are you STILL playing this old song and dance? You lost, move on. . .

I guess you're right - they do sound like typical Apple customers :D

My problem with this story is that apple said that his 'synced' contacts will be lost, given that synced = all, they SHOULD have said: "all of your contacts will be lost".

Exactly.

@Tower Pretty sad you need to make up quotes by me and respond to them just to defend Apple. It's a bad piece of software--it's not any more complicated then that. It really should just be a beta product until the kinks are worked out.

I'd also argue that the answer is not "it should have a warning that it's deleting your original contacts"

It should never delete them under any circumstances. If I wanted my original contacts deleted, I'd do it myself. I don't need mobileme to do it for me.

I'd like to thank you for not just complaining on this forum, but sharing your constructive solution to solving the problem, just like you asked others to do.

Oh wait. You didn't.

Aside from the 2-3 people that posted constructive suggestions which I thanked personally, I got nothing but viscous mean rabid fanboys who defended bad malware that Apple tries to collect money for.

There is no activity in my thread other than some loser chiming in days later after I solved the problem about how it's really not Apple's fault and I should have a backup or some snide comment.

it's really not a forum for people that have anything negative to say about Apple. Because "dear leader" would never err...

What a bunch of mindless tools that you so easily accept mediocrity as a novel and premium product you actually pay more for?

For the people that did help...I am thankful tho and thank them again for their help.

Really this thread should just be closed.

Yep, and if they had your stellar attitude you wouldn't have even gotten their help. So your reply is simply "I'm not going to share what worked for me. Too bad."

You're right. This thread should be closed. And you should look up the meaning of "community" - then come back when you're ready to be part of one.

Are you kidding me? Read through the entire thread and tell me that. If you would turn around and be helpful after constant insults from random people who didn't even read what the problem was or know what they are talking about..then you are a bigger man than me. I'll freely admit that.

This forum is not a help forum. It's a bashing forum. I don't want to participate in that.

Note of 4 PAGES 99% of them is either a personal attack on me for complaing about Apple or it's saying there is nothing wrong with mobileme. There were 3 perhaps 4 actual replies that were people trying to help. I suppose your definition of community is like taliban throwing rocks at a bunch of women for dairing to learn to read. Is that technically a "community" yes. But does that make it a good community?

So your solution is to not only sit here and say "I fixed the problem, but I won't tell you how" but then claim it's a bashing forum? Hmm...have you read the several posts I made just this morning helping people?

If you don't like it here, then why have you been here for at least 30 minutes this morning? You've made your point - you don't like it here. If you aren't going to be helpful then stop trying to get the last word in and just go away.

So instead of just ignoring the message since this thread is "dead" you keep replying. OK. Here's a tip - if you dislike this place so much, don't reply. The thread will die soon enough. You also have the ability to unsubscribe to it as well. It's a great way to not be part of the problem that you say runs so prevalent here.

It's been multiple days and it's still not dead--where did I say my thread was dead. I already stated above people keep replying with retarded questions or comments. If it's directed at me, I reply. If it's not specifically directed towards me, I don't.

Not trying to offend here, but how old are you? Instead of taking the high road, you simply argue with whomever replies to you because of their, as you say, "retarded comments".

You've long solved the problem (even if you refuse to share what it is) and have made your contempt for this forum and it's users very clear, yet you just have to get the last word in the conversation, even if it isn't productive.

Well, it's obvious to me that this is going nowhere. I had hoped that appealing to you on a mature level would actually convince you to do something helpful for the next person who might have your same problem, but it's apparent that you're simply going to reply just to have the last word.

Since I don't need that same validation, I'll move on and help others who may or may not appreciate it. I'll leave you to get your last word in.

I hope someday you'll be willing to rise above the level of some of the others here and see that helping people isn't a "quid-pro-quo" thing. Either you're willing to help - no questions asked - or you're not. And if you're not willing to help, don't demand that others do and then get angry if you don't like what they have to say.

Really, that's all you're doing.

Enjoy your weekend!

I didn't realize I was "Arguing" with you. You kept asking me questions so I answered them. You seem to think you are some sort of helpful elf floating around the forums bringing joy and love but really to me you are just one more insulting person trying to be a pedantic forum warrior. Really, save the lecture. I have had lectures on this thead about how I should have a backup (when I did have a backup) and how this was all my fault and it was 100% user error. Another one from you that comments on how my attitutude about the forums is really cynical (it is), doesnt add much.

Oh--If anyone seems to want the "last word" here it's you as you keep posting here yet have not read the actual thread or having anything substantive to comment. You just want to talk about what an awesome forum member you are and how helpful you are.

Any time you want to stop "helping" me-- feel free.

you say you are on windows 7, you would have been able to right click on your itunes folder in music, go into properties and then previous versions, you could than have just pulled the iphone backup out of that, depending when this happened it may have backups that far back even now
