16'' is bigger, 14'' is smaller. That's all :) No big science around it. I took 16''because bigger display is better, you see things better and you can place more things there.
For me I picked 14 inch, as when I am at home/office, it always docked with two 27 inch monitors, I'm not looking at the laptop screen, whether it is 14 or 16, no difference to me. When I need portability, 14 inch is light and easy to carry

LOVE the 16". It replaced my iMac. No regrets. It's now my "portable" desktop and has completely eliminated the need for a desktop workhorse anymore. I just do occasional docking when needed for peripherals.

Not too heavy either. The only downside I've noticed so far is that it's not as comfortable as my Air for long sessions using the trackpad. Since it's a bit "chunky" and raised, the squared edges around the trackpad are fatiguing after a while.

"The 16-inch is too big & heavy."

Let me introduce you to the 17-inch PowerBook G4. ?
I bought it in 2004. I toted this back & forth to work for a couple of years without an issue.

Weight: 6.8 pounds
Dimensions: 1.0" x 15.4" x 10.2"

I no longer have this computer. I brought into my Apple Store last fall to be recycled.
it is a beautiful thing!

IF you are interested, this fellow does a battery competition.
In terms of battery life, the M1Pro, 16" beats the 13" M1 MacBook Pro, the 14" M1Pro, and the 16" M1Max.

I bought the 16”. I will use it almost exclusively at home, where portability is more about puttering around the house. ?

I know I could have bought the 14” MBP and an external display to maximise portability without sacrificing CPU speed, but I wouldn’t have been happy looking at photos and other things on the external monitor, knowing full well that the nicest display I have in my house is actually the one attached to my MBP. ? I can’t afford one of those incredible 5K calibrated displays for what I do.

Getting the 16” means I have the best display all the time, whether I’m working at my desk, dining table, coffee table, out in the backyard, etc.

Anybody using their MacBook Pro on their lap on the couch?

I've purchased the 16" M1 Pro but I'm finding it too big. If it was on a desk or table then I absolutely think the 16" would be better, but when the MacBook is on my lap just a few inches from my face it just seems too big.

I'm really disappointed because the price seems better on the 16". For example, the difference between the base models is $500 ($1999 vs $2499) but you get the bigger screen AND the better CPU/GPU.

im using it many nights on the couch. Greatly appreciate having the desktop power and the iMac screen —it’s perfect.

BUT if you find it uncomfortable, you should absolutely not keep it. While a “good deal” it’s still way too expensive for you not to be completely satisfied.

If the difference was $1799 vs $2499, I think there’d be way more 14” converts. I’d be tempted even with a 256GB SSD with so much living in the cloud. I agree the value is in the 16” for this round.

I have tried it just to see how it feels, and it was Ok for me.

For me, smaller laptops are harder to use on my lap because they’re too narrow to sit on the very top, central portion of both my legs (i.e. on top of my femur bones). TI need to keep my legs slightly closer together unnaturally in order for the laptop not to feel like it’ll fall between my thighs.

Last News. Finally I decided on the 14 ". I have never had one of 15" or more...

I've never had a 15" (or larger) laptop before either.

One thing I have learned is that I can't wear a watch with a metal strap (e.g. the "BlingMaster") anymore because the strap will scratch my 16" MBP, and my 16" MBP will scratch my watch.

I only have one, as my others are leather or silicon (Apple Watch), but I wanted to buy a titanium strap for my Apple Watch. Now, maybe I'll stick with the silicon Nike Sport strap.

Hello. I've been following this thread for many days now and read everyone's replies carefully. I reflected on my usage and try to avoid getting into the mindset of over-sharpening my tools rather than my skills. Here is my situation and I'm curious to hear your thoughts, especially those that edit photos and videos.

I am an amateur photographer, digital artist and occasionally edit some short videos shot on my Canon R6. I love doing colour grading both for videos and photos and would like to learn more about them along the way. The apps I use include photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar, FCP. I connect my current 16" (2019) to a 32 inch 4K monitor (Samsung UH850) that has decent colours but still different from what I see on the Mac screen. I do drawing both on my iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) in Procreate and with a drawing tablet in photoshop on the Mac.

I appreciate that the current Mac is powerful enough for me to do all that I need to do, so let's just presume that I simply wish to upgrade to a newer MacBook Pro, for those that edit photos and videos and does digital art, what is your experience on the 14", and would the base 14" be sufficient for what I use the machine for? Thanks!

Was doing some general work and just felt so slumped over my desk with the 14” today. I’ve been on the fence about getting a 16” and this basically sealed the deal. I had gotten the max, and admittedly it is overkill for what I need. Likely will pick up the 16” pro for the battery life. Looking like mid December.

Apparently, the 16" M1Pro has the best battery life AND thermals; even when compared to the M1 Air and M1 Pro! Pretty decent!! The 14" M1Pro has less battery due to the smaller size. It also has worse thermals cos the cooling system isn't as robust/efficient. The M1Max is a substantial power hog and gets the hottest; ESPECIALLY the 14". But the performance is completely off the charts!! The data is pretty clear. It appears to me that it depends on what you want. Portability? Performance? Thermals? Noise? Both MacBook Pros are groundbreaking achievements. And even the M1's are STILL highly relevant and could easily be seen as the best choice for many users. I chose the 16" for the quietest operation. The M1 can handle my processing needs. The M1Pro can handle my connectivity needs, screen real estate, and maintains portability/battery life. Well done Apple!!!

This is the epitome of this thread. It's not about what size is the best size; it's about what size is best for YOU. Some find the 16" better, some find the 14" better. We all have various reasons why we gravitate toward one size over the other. They're both so good.

Ugh went back to Apple store. My heart wants the 14" because I hate the size of the 16", but I currently spend a lot of time at home with just the laptop in my lap right now and no external monitor until I move in ~ 6 months.

Which way would you guys go with this estimated scenario:

Now: Work only on laptop mostly at home/no monitor so 16" makes sense

Future/long term: Planning to move and setup a little office w/ large external monitor. However, I'd still probably do a good amount of work on a couch/patio/etc.

Let's guess future use would be:
- 60% on couch/patio, no monitor attached. Small screen might be annoying, but I suppose I could move to office for heavier work. Not sure what % of this 60% I would care about a large screen.
- 30% at an office w/ monitor attached for more serious work
- 10% remote, coffee shops, etc

Work would be a mix of simple web browsers, occasionally side-by-side, some programming, very infrequent video/photo editing.

I have a 16" intel for work right now and while the screen is nice, I'll say it's also sort of not big enough for 2 side-by-side windows anyway.

Disclaimer: it's a very personal decision and nobody's advice can really make it for you.

If you're going to keep this machine for several+ years, then I would make the decision with your future setup in mind. You'll have a lighter and more nimble machine for moving around to coffee shops and on the couch / patio, and it'll take up less space on a desk when you plug it into a monitor (and drive it with the same power the 16" would).

I love the compact form factor of the 14", for me it was compelling enough to win me over the larger screen size of the 16". I didn't want to sacrifice size and weight to get the extra screen real estate. I'm in a similar situation where I won't have an external monitor for the next year actually, but when I come back home and have my monitor I'll be even happier that I went with the 14".

Return done. Made sure I did that before looking at the two side by side so that I didn’t get indecisive. The footprint for the 16 is soooo much larger than anticipated, especially looking at the 14 next to it. But I miss my 15 inch (while I loved the 13 inch M1, I hated the size…just way too small). 16 inch it is. Hasn’t been any stock in the Houston area in almost 2 weeks.

Seriously asking, how do you get your lap just a few inches from your face? Mine is literally arm's length.

That said, I have used my 16" on my chest lying on the couch, and holy crap is this screen amazing for watching HDR video.

Decided on the 14", but now debating wether to wait for the silver to come back in stock at my local store, or just pick up the space grey? I've only ever had silver MacBook's, so not sure if SG will be a welcome change or too weird to adjust to.

Silver for durability.

I had the 14”MBP for a week. I even traveled with it. It was great but I did end exchanging it for a 16”MBP yesterday. Not looking back now this 16”MBP is even more amazing. Go with the 16”

What pushed you to the 16?

I will say playing with the 14" in store it felt VERY similar to me to the old M1 13.3". For most tasks the M1 vs M1 Pro won't matter, and at 14" I didn't think the mini-led screen was THAT much better than the 13.3.

The weight/bulk of the 16 is such a huge turn-off to me though. Makes me dislike the feel of the product as a whole.

I went from the 13”M1 to the 14”. It’s a big difference really. The build is so solid. Doesn’t feel fragile like the 13” MBP M1. I did travel with the 14” while out and about I realized I needed more screen so that was the major reason for me to swap. I’ve purposely carried the 16” around every where I go and don’t find it to be too heavy. It too feels really built solid. I would NEVER do this but it just feels like you can throw it around without doing any damage.
