I just ended up with both and am now truly happy! AT LAST!!!! My 16 Max silver is on my desk as my desktop and the 14 grey pro is on my lap right now :)
Must be nice to find true happiness at such a discount. I’m envious.

Got a chance to see new 16 inch at BB. Wow, this thing feels super light. I wouldn't hesitate grabbing 16" over the 14".
I think Apple hit the right spot with the weight/size: my m1 Air feels much denser machine and can't tell it is much lighter. Overall this 16" sits at 2.1kg, while my other Dell xps 15 at 2.5 kg feels very very cumbersome and unwieldy. Probably you don't want anything above 2.1 - sweet spot.

I tested the 16" M1 Pro and I can say it was a love-hate relationship.
Cold, fast, with a beautiful screen.
But coming from a 15" 2017, the new one just feels too big. The old one was already at the limit for what I consider conveniently portable, this one extrapolates it.
My briefcase with my 15", charger, cell phone, notebook and airpods feels lighter than the new one alone.
It is definitely a machine that is not comfortable to walk around.

That sounds strange because in 2010 I had a 15" (which was approximately the same size as the 2021) in college and it was ok. But which was normal 11 years ago is weird today, no doubt , the 16" doesn't look more modern to me than my 5 year old laptop, and it looks a lot more like my 11 year old one (feel and look).

On the other hand, I've been with the M1 Pro 14" for 1 week, and man, it's spectacular.
The screen is slightly smaller than the 15" one, but the body is comfortably smaller. I mean, on first contact, there's no way, even if it was only 0.1" smaller, always is weird going to anything small, but after 2/3 days, you simply celebrate for choosing the 14", it's much more convenient and enjoyable to have this screen, enough space + enough portability.

About screen size to be ergonomic and help productivity.
Well, in my opinion, if I were to score ergonomics for serious work on the table, the 14" would get 5/10, while the 16" would get 6/10.
None of them are enough for that, if you REALLY need the screen you will have to go with an external monitor anyway. I use an LG 34" 5K2K which is perfect for ergonomics/productivity.

We are all 10 years older now...

But seriously, I guess we were also used to the 10-year trend of MacBooks getting thinner and lighter. I do wish the new 16" weighs 1.8kg like the 2016 generation. I happen to be happy with the 14" (1.6kg), but I am sure it will be a pain to go to a heavier model in the future if that is necessary.

I fully agree. In addition, it's not like it's impossible to deal with the size / weight, the fact is that it's simply inconvenient and uncomfortable. Finally, have you ever thought if Apple made a 15" MacBook M1 like the 2016~2019 ones and put infinite edges like the XPS? 1.7kg, small body big screen, it would be amazing. For me, my 15" 2017 is still one of the sleekest computers out there (more than the new 16"), and I'll keep it as a backup for my 14" 2021/XPS 9510.

I am back on a 14in (this time 32 core m1 max 32gb ram)..after spending 15 days on the 16" m1 pro. This machine definitely stays warm when in use, even just watching youtube, its slightly warm to the touch. Obviously there is a different going from the m1 pro in a 16in chassis to the m1 max in a 14in chassis...but I really find it so much easier to get around and even use the 14in over the 16in.
If you’re using Chrome to watch YouTube, i think it would heat up much more.

Lucky you! I have the 14” in sliver I prefer the smaller size the 16 is absolutely huge! I am quite small myself though. Here is my unboxing of the 14” in sliver

I will miss the better speakers and larger screen and great battery life, but I need portability.
even while im typing this I am still not fully decided. I miss the 16 already..but I missed the 14 when I had the 16. I dont think ill be completely happy with either machine..
I’ve not noticed my 16gb 14” to get hot at all, it has been warm once after editing for a few hours on iMovie but that was it. I’m very impressed with my new machine! Is the keyboard not the same size on both computers?

Had an Air last that I was checking out...didn't like the screen size for various reasons. Went to the Apple store today to check out the 14 and 16's...Came home w/ 16" M1Pro 1tb version in silver with edu discount. (seems a bunch of stores now have this version within the past day, the space grey in base 16" is showing up too)

14 was nice but still seemed close to the 13.

I mean it's a little beefy but not like YouTube vlogger reviewers insane beefy like they make it out to be. For me, this is meant to be a possible iMac 27 2012 replacement, use around the house, surf web, YouTube, twitch, Lightroom photo editing machine.
If I get rid of the iMac someday, maybe I'll get a monitor dedicated for this, but have a LG ultragear 27" 1440 on my PC that I can hook into for now if needed.

When the reviews were saying it stayed silent, battery lasted, stayed cool, even when taxed a bit and they now come with SD slot again, MagSafe charging, new type of screen...signs were pointing that this would really be a good time to purchase it and keep for the long-term.

for gaming is the 16 inches M1 Pro good enough?
I’ve noticed on YouTube there are a few games that play very well with a 16 inch 32 core GPU. You may wish to look it up and see for yourself. That’s why I bought a 16 inch 32 core GPU so I can play tomb raider and some other games out of very nice FPS

Was your 16" the base model, or did they have different models in store?

I got the 16” silver, mid tier one. I see LI/NYC area has base 16” in grey, no silver. Mid-tier both grey and silver in stores in the area, top M1Max version no grey or silver at any.
Just a few stores w/ 10/16cores 14” in grey.

This is looking at the pickup locations when you go to buy it online.

Ahh.. You checked online before going to the store..

Doing that for the model I want still shows store pickup being unavailable, but shipping time has now dropped from 9-12 weeks down to 1-2.. However, that 1-2 weeks does not mean I'll receive it in 1-2 weeks, but that it will ship in 1-2 weeks.

Several 16 ”Max 24gpu 32gb ram and 1tb, also 14” 24gpu 32gb 1tb, accidentally came to our local store in Europe. It's not an Apple Store, just a resseler. Respecting the 16 ”size, I'm going to pick it up today if I'm still messing with the indecision between the two sizes.

I'll add experiences for the undecided later.

Exactly the same. love - hate relation ship. I owned a MacBook 15 ”2013 for 7 years. I never had a serious problem with its size and I traveled a lot, during high school for example 1000km by train almost every other week. And I carried it in my backpack every day. The size of the screen suited me very much, but sometimes I dreamed of a smaller laptop, but when I looked at the brothers 13 ”it immediately cooled me down. After the arrival of 14 ", I started dreaming that it was an ideal size, but in fact, 14 doesn't seem to be more than 13" at all, I don't know how the others feel after the transition from 13 "to 14".

I came from a 15” to the 14” and love it. I find myself using it on my sofa, bed, around town, etc more than I did my 15”. It just so portable and light.

I played with the 16” at the store and felt if it never left my desk it would be the better choice but I’d rather not lug that thing around.

I think if you have an external monitor, the 14” is the best choice. You get the big monitor experience plus the portability of the smaller form factor. I up the resolution on the 14” and it is perfectly fine for me. I can fit two safari windows side by side easily. I use it as a second screen next to my 32” LG on my desk.

I had both 15" and 13". Like I said, when you go smaller, you always will notice at first, even if is only 0.1". The fact is, three days later, the 14" looks so much better than the 15", the body is much smaller, but the screen is only slighty smaller. Compared to the 13", it's the opposite, almost the same size, but a significantly bigger screen.

I am comfortable with my 2018/15" and then I went to see the 14" but its top case is small for my hands to type comfortably. I agree with "14 was nice but still seemed close to the 13."

I looked hard at the 14 and 16 today at Best Buy and I left not knowing what the hell I wanted to buy. They are in stock at my store in a few days. I have a m1 MBA which is really nice but the screen on the pros...
