My 14" MacBook Pro arrived about a half hour ago! It was supposed to arrive on the 16th, then Apple updated the date and time to Monday the 13th by 1 PM, then about 2 hours ago I got a notice it was on the FedEx truck out for delivery. Sweet. I unpacked it, but the computer was really cold so I just let it warm up to room temp (I live in Minnesota, and its pretty cold here - plus we're getting 8 - 14 inches of snow today, so it's nice to have this new MacBook to set up.)

No, my middle laptop is main one and I have a Magic Mouse for that only. the rest obviously use their trackpads and keyboards :) The 2 outer ones are fro entertainment mainly, music videos and games or messaging etc
Mmm, wouldn't it make it easier to just use 2 external screen?

why not iPads ( or at least one iPad Pro 12) then?

Actually no, I find it way easier with these 3 laptops then juggling with clicking on loads of open programs on one or two screens. Plus apart from XDR screens I find everything else rather rubbish! I have been very spoilt I think. VERY happy with these OLEDlike except with crazy good brightness laptop screens :)

I do almost the same. 16max to right. Xdr display middle hooked to 16. 13 air to left for YouTube. Etc...

This. 100% I would not carry the 16" around. It's pretty much a desktop workstation that you can take it with you if you have no other resort but I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that
I have a little chuckle when I see comments like this. I traveled years at work with laptops weighing 8-12lbs. And I can still walk upright.
granted dinosaurs still walked the earth but that’s beside the point
these new notebook are light!

It's not about traveling. I just never took my Air out of my backpack even when I was going to walk for a whole day and I wasn't sure if I'll need it. But if I decided to sit in some cafe or so I always had my laptop with me. It was that light! I'm sure I will not do it with new Pro 16". So maybe 16 is not heavy in comparison with some old huge laptops, the Air was just another level of portability and when I switched to 16 I was shocked of how clumsily large it is.
P.S. my Pro 14" arrived yesterday, after comparing it to 16 model I've decided to return 14 and keep 16. Even if 16 is heavier (though the difference is not as huge as with Air), now I feel that I've got used to the new screen to the point that now I feel 14 just too tiny for serious work and multitasking. Even considering that I have external monitor, I like working in some cafes for a change, but when I was doing some multitasking with Air I always felt that I needed more space.

That's the big difference with the 16" - you can comfortably have 2/3 windows open on the screen at once, or more if working at a scaled resolution, which is great when you have things you need to do which benefit from that sort of arrangement.

What did you end up going with?
Hi!

I did not order yet, I am waiting to see my actual budget.

Option 4: (Max 1) Max 10/24 16inch $3699

The rational choice was the most expensive (4) or the second most expensive (1) of my mid-tier range. The middle models was not worth it. And because on this price point, the 14 and 16 inch had almost the same price, for students, the most expensive is the most rational to buy.

My emotional / wholesome / personal decision:
But my choice, because I studied some this year, was the most expensive choice,
because of student pricing,
because I might be doing streaming,
and I will do video editing.

An reservation: If start to think that I will only use an external monitor to this, I might consider Option 3. It might also be right for me.

Conclusion: Option 4: (Max 1) Max 10/24 16inch $3699. I will go with this choice, if I can stretch my budget. I am one week away from making the order.

::::::::::

/PS! I made a mistake in the student prices of the quoted text, if you want to edit and change Option 4 to 5, and Option 5 to 4 in the last column, or take it away.

Good Choice! I think if you’re already getting the SSD and RAM Upgrades, the differences in the processor don’t really matter that much any more, so I get it. Just keep in mind the allegedly bad battery life on the 14 with M1 Max, if you end up going with that. I have the M1 Pro 10/16 in my 14 inch, and honestly, the battery life is not that great already, being used to the M1 MBA, so I personally wouldn’t want it to be any worse.

16” M1Pro delivered Mon, Dec 6. 88% charge. I’ve installed a ton of audio production apps, Microsoft 365, iLok, and a few other utilities. Been doing web browsing, video watching, balancing the family budget; that sort of thing. I haven’t installed ProTools, Davinci Resolve Studio 17, and a few others yet, so no real heavy use. That being said, it’s Saturday, I have yet to unpack the MagSafe; and the charge is at 20%.

It seems to me that there is more and more experience here that the Macbook 16 "is comfortably portable. I just come to the conclusion that the first impressions before were that it is a non-portable behemoth. But it seems to me that more people prefer 16" according to reviews and opinions. .

My Macbook 16 "max 24gpu 32gb ram 1TB has been sitting on the table for a week now, I only carried it during one 1000km long journey by train and bus.

I'm still thinking about exchanging for 14 ". Not because of the size but because of the comfort of use.

I went back and forth on whether to get the 14" or 16", and in the end got the 14" Max 32core GPU, 32GB and 2TB SSD. Since I've been using a 12" MacBook since early last year I finally decided to go with the smaller MacBook Pro. I'm glad I did - it doesn't feel heavy to me, and Capture One is already MUCH faster than it was on the MacBook. Also, so far it hasn't been too warm and the battery life is good.

Any reason why you went with the Max? From the reviews I saw, 14" with the M1 Max has atrocious battery life.

At least the reviews I looked at didn't sound like it had bad battery life, and so far it's been really good - of course I've only had it for about a day and a half. And if the battery life isn't as good as the Pro chip, 1/2 hour on the charger pretty much takes care of that. But it's definitely debatable whether or not I really needed the Max.
Anyway, so far I'm thrilled with it.

It sucks so much and it's really depressing that I find my 16" to be perfect with the exception of the display. It's absolutely gorgeous when but the slow refresh response and all the ghosting on text being scrolled is a total deal breaker for me. I have no choice but to sell it and go back to a 14" which seems to be more tolerable. Such a shame because I love the 16" screen format, going back to 14" just seems too small now.
