Apologies in advance for the length of this post—just thought it worked better to quickly reply to each post rather than a long (and often rambling as I tend to do) version.
TL;DR - I think environmentally it‘s a good mood, an overwhelming majority of people already have too many excess plugs, but Apple’s spin will be wrong and they won’t offset the cost savings in the price of the phone as they should do. Oh, and get ready for the entire industry to follow suit over the following years.
I get that, but it's besides the point. Apple is just assuming everyone has owned every product they've ever made and have tons of chargers and cables lying around which is just the most Apple mentality to have. Can you imagine how furious you would be if you're an average consumer that doesn't follow tech and just bought your first iPhone...only to get it home and realize you can't charge it? That's insane.
Oh and Apple chargers tend to cost a lot. Like $50 bucks if I remember correctly.
You don’t need to have owned an Apple product...rumors indicate it will still include a cable, just not the plug. Unless this is your first electronics purchase EVER, you’ll likely have a plug that will work already.
It is a really cheap move on Apples part. The most cash rich company in the world and they pull this kind of move. It really is a no class move on their part.
No matter how may cables or chargers people have. A new and expensive phone should come with the very basic things it needs to operate and sustain that device. It should come with a cable and power adapter.
Agree it’s a cheap move if Apple doesn’t pass the savings on to consumers...and they most likely won’t. Disagree about the second part...it’s just incredibly wasteful to keep pumping out plugs most people don’t need. I have a drawer of probably 2 dozen unused USB plugs, maybe more. Most people probably don’t have that many but will have plenty of plugs already. And for the same money Apple charges for a single port plug, there are tons of great third party, multi-port charges that are a better solution. But again, I agree it’s a cheap move if consumers don’t realize some saving from the move.
And for someone like myself, who does not have an existing iOS device, having to buy a cable to charge my new phone might just cause me to stick to devices that will use the chargers/cables I already have.
Again, rumors are it’ll include the cable, just not the plug.
I must admit... if Apple plans to keep using that 5watt cube charger, I'll co-sign with them to get rid of it from the box. I've stopped using those chargers for years now. I do understand your viewpoint as far as the average joe who buys a iPhone to not find a charger in the box, it could be a confusing experience.
But in this period of time... there's plenty of opportunities to charge the phone. From laptops, desktops to gaming systems... I normally charge my phone from the desktop anyways.
Exactly, wasting materials (and all of these are made of environmentally unfriendly plastic) on chargers most people don’t need is unnecessary. And if people have to spend money on a plug, maybe they’ll look a getting one they can use for multiple devices.
There are just too many scenarios in households of more than one person, floors, rooms or devices for most to need more than one charger let alone starting with 0
Most OEM's already do not supply chargers with other products like headsets knowing that users have a charger with their phone
Apple ECO now needs even a separate purchase to charge your device, if this rumor is true
So why aren’t you critical of all these other OEMs for not providing a way to charge their device? Seems a bit hypocritical.
The point is that its a dishonest move by Apple. They will put it out to the public like they are trying to save the customer money by not raising prices. But in reality, they know most people will buy a charger from them and they also know their chargers are ridiculously overpriced. So in a roundabout way, its a cash grab by Apple and their phrasing it like its for the customers benefit.
Don’t disagree in that, like the headphone jack, Apple will likely spin the message away from the actual truth. I don’t disagree with omitting the plug personally for all the reasons mentioned earlier in this post but Apple needs to pass that savings onto consumers.
And FWIW, Apples 12W USB-A charger is $19 and their 18W USB-C is $29. Not the cheapest but not that far off the competition.
This is the sort of antic that puts me off Apple. Maybe next year there’ll be no box or packaging and instead you get your new iPhone in a Jiffy bag!
in honesty though, I can’t see them being able to pull this one off. Most people aren’t techies and only buy a phone every few years so faced with no charger, I think many would be swayed to pick an alternative.
People will barely blink an eye at this, same as they did for the headphone jack omission. And brace yourself because if they do actually do this, most other OEMs will follow suit over the subsequent years, just like they did with the headphone jack.
True, but it's a business way of looking at things. Look at how Apple handled withholding of the headphone jack. How much "courage" it took? I'm trolling lol.
But on a serious tip... whatever Apple do, companies tend to follow suit.
^This.
I’m sure I’m going to see push back over this so let me clarify my personal opinion. I’m fine with OEM’s (all OEMs, not just Apple) removing the plug from their devices. We’re at the point were it’s just wasteful to add an item that most people don’t need and don’t recycle. I’m NOT OK will the likely scenario where Apple will omit it but not pass noticeable savings onto the customer.
