so then a new first time phone buyer would out of luck? Have to spend another $40 or so to keep their new expensive phone charged?

Then i would not be surprised if the new revamped Air Power wireless charging station is released soon or at the same time as the iPhone 12
Yep was waiting for someone to point that out LOL another catch in the ECO :D

I must admit... if Apple plans to keep using that 5watt cube charger, I'll co-sign with them to get rid of it from the box. I've stopped using those chargers for years now. I do understand your viewpoint as far as the average joe who buys a iPhone to not find a charger in the box, it could be a confusing experience.

But in this period of time... there's plenty of opportunities to charge the phone. From laptops, desktops to gaming systems... I normally charge my phone from the desktop anyways.

The point is that its a dishonest move by Apple. They will put it out to the public like they are trying to save the customer money by not raising prices. But in reality, they know most people will buy a charger from them and they also know their chargers are ridiculously overpriced. So in a roundabout way, its a cash grab by Apple and their phrasing it like its for the customers benefit.

This is the sort of antic that puts me off Apple. Maybe next year there’ll be no box or packaging and instead you get your new iPhone in a Jiffy bag!

in honesty though, I can’t see them being able to pull this one off. Most people aren’t techies and only buy a phone every few years so faced with no charger, I think many would be swayed to pick an alternative.

True, but it's a business way of looking at things. Look at how Apple handled withholding of the headphone jack. How much "courage" it took? I'm trolling lol.

But on a serious tip... whatever Apple do, companies tend to follow suit.

Yep. Apple not including a charger this year is preparing people for the portless iPhone next year. I’ll give it to early 2022 and you still see more and more companies follow suit. It’s starting to become rare that we even see headphones jacks in flagships.

Apologies in advance for the length of this post—just thought it worked better to quickly reply to each post rather than a long (and often rambling as I tend to do) version.

TL;DR - I think environmentally it‘s a good mood, an overwhelming majority of people already have too many excess plugs, but Apple’s spin will be wrong and they won’t offset the cost savings in the price of the phone as they should do. Oh, and get ready for the entire industry to follow suit over the following years.

I get that, but it's besides the point. Apple is just assuming everyone has owned every product they've ever made and have tons of chargers and cables lying around which is just the most Apple mentality to have. Can you imagine how furious you would be if you're an average consumer that doesn't follow tech and just bought your first iPhone...only to get it home and realize you can't charge it? That's insane.

Oh and Apple chargers tend to cost a lot. Like $50 bucks if I remember correctly.

You don’t need to have owned an Apple product...rumors indicate it will still include a cable, just not the plug. Unless this is your first electronics purchase EVER, you’ll likely have a plug that will work already.

It is a really cheap move on Apples part. The most cash rich company in the world and they pull this kind of move. It really is a no class move on their part.

No matter how may cables or chargers people have. A new and expensive phone should come with the very basic things it needs to operate and sustain that device. It should come with a cable and power adapter.

Agree it’s a cheap move if Apple doesn’t pass the savings on to consumers...and they most likely won’t. Disagree about the second part...it’s just incredibly wasteful to keep pumping out plugs most people don’t need. I have a drawer of probably 2 dozen unused USB plugs, maybe more. Most people probably don’t have that many but will have plenty of plugs already. And for the same money Apple charges for a single port plug, there are tons of great third party, multi-port charges that are a better solution. But again, I agree it’s a cheap move if consumers don’t realize some saving from the move.

And for someone like myself, who does not have an existing iOS device, having to buy a cable to charge my new phone might just cause me to stick to devices that will use the chargers/cables I already have.

Again, rumors are it’ll include the cable, just not the plug.

Exactly, wasting materials (and all of these are made of environmentally unfriendly plastic) on chargers most people don’t need is unnecessary. And if people have to spend money on a plug, maybe they’ll look a getting one they can use for multiple devices.

There are just too many scenarios in households of more than one person, floors, rooms or devices for most to need more than one charger let alone starting with 0

Most OEM's already do not supply chargers with other products like headsets knowing that users have a charger with their phone

Apple ECO now needs even a separate purchase to charge your device, if this rumor is true

So why aren’t you critical of all these other OEMs for not providing a way to charge their device? Seems a bit hypocritical.

Don’t disagree in that, like the headphone jack, Apple will likely spin the message away from the actual truth. I don’t disagree with omitting the plug personally for all the reasons mentioned earlier in this post but Apple needs to pass that savings onto consumers.

And FWIW, Apples 12W USB-A charger is $19 and their 18W USB-C is $29. Not the cheapest but not that far off the competition.

This is the sort of antic that puts me off Apple. Maybe next year there’ll be no box or packaging and instead you get your new iPhone in a Jiffy bag!

People will barely blink an eye at this, same as they did for the headphone jack omission. And brace yourself because if they do actually do this, most other OEMs will follow suit over the subsequent years, just like they did with the headphone jack.

^This.

I’m sure I’m going to see push back over this so let me clarify my personal opinion. I’m fine with OEM’s (all OEMs, not just Apple) removing the plug from their devices. We’re at the point were it’s just wasteful to add an item that most people don’t need and don’t recycle. I’m NOT OK will the likely scenario where Apple will omit it but not pass noticeable savings onto the customer.

All good reasons and all good analogies and agree with most of what you wrote.

The sad truth is consumers will not see the cost savings passed onto them. The move will be a PR propaganda and slanted as way to save our landfills. But it is a move to sell more Apple branded or "certified" accessories.
The same thing was done with removing the headphone jack. People just bought more accessories and spent more money to get the same functionality and features Apple removed.
So this is a huge win for Apple. They will cut costs....while making people spend extra money.

Yup, don’t really disagree with this. And I’m sure they won‘t do it but I’d love them to explicitly state that they can and should use the charging plugs they already have but I’m sure at a minimum they’ll be silent and or even worse, as you mentioned, will steer customers to their accessories. Most likely, it’ll be towards wireless chargers.

Edit: The Verge has posted an article about this very rumor and have to say, I agree with just about everything stated within. Dieter has a couple of great additional solutions Apple could offer—and I agree that both are probably unlikely.

Apple might not include a charger with the iPhone 12. Good.

Reading that article, I don’t think Apple is ready to steer consumers toward wireless chargers... Only until Apple have one of their own. I do believe they will have a 12watt charger in the footprint of that 5watt cube to direct users to buy that separately, but until Apple introduce the no port iPhone... that’s when Apple will mysteriously bring out the AirPower.

I do agree with Dieter though, Apple needs to provide some help along the way. Offering a free charger for new iPhone purchases or a Gift Card of equal value, will help change users like @Awesomesince86, @yui4, @hallux and @SteveJUAE viewpoint on the situation.

Having some familiarity with the Apple retail process, I can confirm retail staff have been strongly encouraged to offer wireless chargers to all iPhone consumers, going back to the iPhone X/iPhone 8 release. All of there iPhone tables and many others throughout their stores have multiple wireless chargers to showcase this functionality. It’s not a coincidence.

If Apple does ditch the power plug, I think their push towards wireless charging will be the equivalent of a full court press in basketball.

Just my gut feeling.

Yeah, you might be right. Maybe, I’m just looking at it from my perspective. I haven’t purchased a wireless charger for my phone. Even when I had the iPhone X, I preferred using cable. Now, I have the Note10+... and I purchased a dock instead of going the wireless route.

Simply the primary device for many accessories for most OEM's is the phone especially with AW, so there is a reasonable argument that if the primary device has a charger then accessories need not replicate this

Apple may change this

I do not know how you accumulate so many chargers I always sell them with the device including original packaging etc

For many who have a house hold of more that one having multiple charges in multiple locals is a major convenience and that is before you count outdoor toys like boats etc

I have had enough of buying chargers from Apple with their poor cables on Macs, over 5 last count at $60-80 a pop

Whats in the Iphone box has always been low value to other OEM's this is just likely another poke in the eye

I have 2 sons and my house is the gathering place for all their friends. I often give away Apple chargers, cables and earpods to my sons friends. I don't know how teenage boys can lose or damage stuff so easily!

So they don't just collect in a drawer or go unused!

I also have iPhone charging setup up in just about every room of the house and multiple cars as well. Then I carry an extra set in my work and personal backpacks.

If i were to get an iPhone, i woud be mad. I dont have a charger laying around for it. I havent had an iPhone since 2010.

In the middle of this you state a 29 dollar charger isn't far off the competition?, I've bought in the past, a brand new Samsung OEM charger plug and cable, delivered, for £3.99, some would say that's a bit of a price difference..... And that's not a one off isolated purchase.

Well, I have to admit, if this rumor is true, that Samsung is jumping on this bandwagon much sooner than I expected.

Samsung to Follow Apple and Stop Offering Power Adapters With Smartphones Next Year

Not from Samsung, you’re not. Yes, they tend to be less expensive than Apple’s options but they’re nowhere close to that price. Samsung chargers at the most prevalent electronics retailer in the US, Best Buy, start at $35 (and yes I’m aware they are including the cable).

I've seen them on eBay for £12.99. They are official, but I think they've been taken out of retail boxes. And that's cheap. I'd love to know where people can find them for £3.99.

I didn't say it was direct from Samsung, I just said a Samsung charger, resellers on ebay UK, all brand new, had a few in my time, all quality gear. Just because someone charges 30 bucks for an item that costs a dollar to make, doesn't make it worth 30 bucks!!

back to original post...what are some reputable places to look for a refurb phone?
aside from apple store?

Reading all this makes me glad I held onto my Galaxy S5, LG Lucid 3, and ZTE Majesty Pro. I still use all three.

Why does it seem that more and more, the older phones from 2014 and earlier seem to have far more useful features than the boring glass sandwiches made today, that cost a lot more but offer less features than a BlackBerry in 2010? Seriously, why even bother to upgrade at all?

We get it, you like to live in the past and have an aversion to modern technology.

I don't have an aversion to modern technology. It's just that modern tech has LESS features than the older stuff which makes it more a downgrade not an upgrade. I assure you, I am missing nothing! I certainly am glad I don't own a modern vehicle with all that push button start and auto start stop garbage. You go enjoy your 2020 vehicles in the hot summer heat without A/C when in gridlock traffic because it decides to shut the engine down. You do you and I'll do me. When there is something out there that entices me to actually buy it, I will. I'm not opposed to new stuff so long as it does something useful I can't do already.

Yes, less than a blackberry. Ever see anything close to the old Torch? slider keyboard, touchscreen, stylus, AND enterprise security? yeah.

Not sure what the newer phones are missing at the old phones have asside from a IR blaster that you can get if you want or a old tech sliding keyboard but whatever,..... Theres always that one guy but I don't know why you keep coming here and saying the same old things.

Probably because you can count on one hand who wants a physical keyboard you're stuck with. I'm sure the touchscreen on a 10+ year old Blackberry was worth shouting about over a modern one....
