I think also with the new 120 HZ display, if you take just the average iPad consumer that doesn't exactly know what they are purchasing in terms of upgrades , they don't know what to look for either. They don't know what Promotion is and nor are they able to grasp the concept of how much more fluid the display is in comparison.

Sometimes, having side-by-side comparison's and someone showing them what they need to look for, makes a difference. But for heavy tech users, they most likely will notice the difference immediately, depending how much they use their older iPad.

I think proMotion will get much more interesting with OLED. OLED can have a low persistence mode where the screen only turns on for a fraction of the frame time (maybe something like 1 ms of every 8.33 ms frame). At 60 Hz, the flickering caused by a low persistence mode is annoying, but by about 90 Hz the flickering isn’t noticeable for most people.

With low persistence and OLEDs fast pixel switching time, a scrolling images is almost as sharp as a still image. On the other hand, switching from 60 Hz to 120 Hz on an LCD reduces the amount of blur by less than half.

I just did a quick search and couldn't see a clear answer - has Procreate been updated to support ProMotion?

Trying one out in store, I noticed the 120hz refresh easily throughout the OS, but the procreate app seemed to be lacking it - both in terms of panning and zooming, and even the pencil latency appeared quite bad. The notes app seemed much smoother for drawing.

lol, me too. i was so keen to test this 120 hz motion thing every one's been banging on about and quess what? looks exactly the same to me as my previous ipads. couldnt tell a single difference.
But could you ever go back? I can see it, but it is not a big deal to me. This is analogous to the "zero latency" pencil hype when it first released. Also a lot of reviewers seem to conflate promotion with the new pencil latency. Bogus-imho

You raise an interesting side issue--pencil latency in store demos. I see it occasionally in different models. Can't explain it.

Had another look today in Apple store. Still cant see it :p
Can't you just buy the device and then return it like everyone else at MR? Why are you evaluating your purchase decisions before ordering, And what if ordering and returning products entails massive waste; Apple can afford it.

Promotion as far as I am concerned would not by any stretch be the main reason for me personally to upgrade my prior iPad.

It's a great feature. But Soley alone for the Promotion display, you're correct, it wouldn't be worth just the price tag for that. Fortunately Apple makes it easier purchase with all the other incremental upgraded features. It's a combination of features to justify the upgrade, the Promotion display is just one of the many features.

I write a lot of notes with Apple Pencil. I could notice the difference 120hz makes after I wrote my first sentence in Notability. It's amazing. 20ms input lag best in industry and the responsiveness is similar to writing on paper.

Everyone, and I mean every single tech journalist, is just enamored with promotion. Promotion just means the new iPad Pros scroll at 120hz. I just want to say I couldn't see the difference at all. I went into the Apple Store, did some drawing in Procreate, scrolled up and down all over the place, and I just couldn't tell the difference. I'm not downplaying the significance of promotion, I just think it's a good idea to try before you buy, you know, try to find out if your eyes can see it. The new iPad Pro is still a worthy upgrade, the new processor is incredible, IF you need it.

Right now, I think the first iPad Pro is a bargain on the used market. Especially if you want LTE.

For the Apple Pencil users, the latency is HALF of what it was on the iPad Pro 1st Gen - and is instantly noticeable.

Here's a video to demonstrate - go to the 10:10 mark.

OP, I finally got to see it today and I was underwhelmed with Promotion. Yes it wasn’t as laggy or blurry but it’s really pretty much it. The pencil is a different story. Much less latency. Anyway, after finally seeing the 10.5 I will probably get an old one.

Latency of the pencil was always an annoyance to me when using it for note taking. The lag between my writing and what appeared on the screen, kind of reminds me of when you can hear your own voice echoed during a phone call. To me it was always kind of off-putting.

I actually have yet to experience the Apple Pencil. I wasn't as compelled to purchase it when It first launched back in 2015, but being that the latency has been reduced and greatly improved with the efficiency of how it interacts with the display, I definitely see it as a reason to be an accessory for my next iPad purchase.

I'm sure this is like people saying they can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4K.
I guess some people's eyes are just not receptive to it.

You can tell the difference, but folks wanting to hype their purchase and feel good about a menial upgrade are overselling it. I went with every intention to buy. Left going home to my 12.9 IPP original. Honestly, pick up a 9.7 IPP on clearance. The 10.5 is just too expensive for what it is, especially with decent storage.

I love how your trying to sell an opinion as fact lol.
Why would I sell my 10.5 for a device with half as much ram? It makes no sense.

I’m not trying to sell anything. Certainly not gonna sell my 12.9 for the 10.5, it’s a cycle upgrade and nothing more. You guys are acting like promotion is a game changer. It’s not. Congrats on your purchase though.

And who exactly is acting like that? It seems to me that the general consensus of replies was that it is a nice improvement, but not a game changing one.

I really noticed it again while browsing Free People's website yesterday. I have corrected vision and I truly appreciate being able to read easily even when I scroll rather fast. It's a nice feature.

Some people may see it, some may not. I find it is very apparent on Safari.

I think 720p versus 1080p is more the litmus test. 4k versus 1080p is a different animal.

So Promotion to me is more the difference between 720p and 1080p (especially on smallish displays), it is not earth shattering.

Why would i want to buy the thing? I already have a 12.9 1st gen, which i have zero intention of upgrading any time soon. I was only commenting on the ProMotion thing that i was eager to see. Which, again today, i cannot. Even the store manager said it was negligible for most people and also agreed he couldnt see the hype.

But, for less Pencil latency? That was an interesting point.
