I noticed it immediately, but as I continued to use it, I didn't notice it as it became the new normal for me.

I've owned a 12.9 pro for over a year.

Unusually for me, I've been ignoring the latest iPad release (busy at work!) but I stopped at Best Buy recently to have a look. Text scrolling in safari is noticeably smoother. More precisely, small text seems to stay very crisp while in motion.

Not something to make me upgrade, but a nice incremental improvement.

The 10.5 is just too expensive for what it is, especially with decent storage.
Its a liitle hard to benchmark the value. At $649, I think its fair. Its a unique device: the form factor, the screen, the camera. the pencil. I would buy it with a pencil and a leather smart cover and look to keep it 4 years--that's $205/year.

I think what helps verify the value of the iPad Pro, it's not just the iPad self, but what you can overall expand with it as you said, with the Apple Pencil and smart keyboard, and other accessories. Where as the 9.7 2017 iPad, there really isn't much beyond accessories you can expand with it, as it lacks the smart connector and Apple Pencil support.

That’s a valid point. Already have the pencil and wanted the leather pouch with pencil holder. For the 256 that’s right at a grand after taxes. If I didn’t have the 12.9 probably would be an easier decision. I did like the 10.5 keyboard. Sure it’s not as roomy as the 12.9 I have, but could get by in a pinch.

Not arguing here--but do you need 256gb for your secondary ipad? The sleeve is aesthetically awesome but lacks a way to prop the ipad to optimum drawing angle. I like the 10.5 smart cover--less floppy than than the 12.9. Happy hunting

Some people may see it, some may not. I find it is very apparent on Safari.

Do apps have to be optimized to see any difference with ProMotion 120Hz ?
I use GoodReader for PDFs and Dolphin as browser.
Will I notice any difference in these ?

The OP should not feel bad. Not everyone has X-Men style superhuman vision. I felt left out that I have mere human vision because I can't spot individual pixels on a retina display from 10 feet away. It took a while, but I got over it. ;)

Some people's ears can't even discern the difference between the Apple EarPods and a good pair of earphones, it doesn't mean that those earphones are not better than EarPods. Some people has difficulty discerning between certain colours, it doesn't mean that Apple is not using wide colour gamut. Some people cannot see higher refresh rates, and it doesn't mean that Promotion isn't there.

The way I see (and I hope someone corrects me if I’m wrong about this) - every app that uses standard OS animations is 120Hz. Most apps lean heavily on Core Animation to move things on the screen and these will work in 120Hz. I’m pretty sure both GoodReader and Dolphin fall into that category and, yes, they will use ProMotion. Some apps, on the other hand, use custom animations - for example, when you draw in Procreate, games, etc - so those have to be updated to take advantage of ProMotion (assuming they are able, an intensive 3D game can’t render in 120Hz because it’s too demanding on the hardware).

Whether you’ll notice it is another matter. I can say this - for me, there certainly is a difference, but sight is a very psychological thing and depending on the person, you’ll see anything from a huge difference to none at all. Personally, I didn’t see much difference when I started using my new iPad Pro, however when I tried a last gen one - I was surprised how choppy all the animations felt. Funny thing is, when I look at an iPhone screen, it doesn’t seem as choppy even now, I guess due to the fact that the screen is smaller. Weird.

Short answer: yeah, most people will see the difference, some will care more, some less. It’s a cool feature and not a gimmick, for sure.

Very true - a good analogy. Most earphones of the same size sound the same to me (I can discern only a difference between really bad ones and really good ones, but nothing in between) but I don’t claim the difference isn’t there. ProMotion is definitely something that’s real - but not everyone can enjoy it as much.

I noticed it the very first time I used my 10.5 iPad Pro. I got so spoiled by the higher framerate on safari and homescreen that I think my iPhone SE is kinda “sluggish” right now haha even though the SE is still a powerhouse.

Oh, man. I use a 144hz desktop monitor, and use a iPad 10.5 as my main browsing device. Whenever I use my phone or anyone else’s computer, scrolling and animations actually feel sluggish and feel like they’re below 60fps even though it’s just that I’m used to higher haha.

That said, I have to say 144hz on desktop is MUCH more noticeable than 120hz on the iPad, I think due to using a mouse vs touch screen.
