So I was originally going to burn up the two DirecTV gift cards I got for signing up in January as part of my purchase. One for $200 and one for $100. Both have my name printed on the card just like a credit / debit card.

What are the Vegas odds that they will accept these?

I'll still buy with a CC a majority of the price, and if they don't accept it I'll pay the whole thing on it. I just like to get rid of these POS prepaid gift card deals as soon as I receive them since they start sucking the value out in fees after a period of time.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone trying to purchase with whatever method they have available today!

You should be fine because they both have your name embossed on them.

Guess they are avoiding this.

Can someone tell me if this is for the wifi model to? Because in that case I need to make other plans on how to acquire an iPad.

Not the best option since it will cost you, but if you really can't get a credit card or don't want to use yours, you can always buy a 'gift' visa or mastercard or whatever with the amount you need on it. I did that when I had to pay one of those credit collector companies for an old bill. I wanted to be able to pay by credit card over the phone, but I did not want to give them the chance to charge me for more, as some of the less reputable ones were known to do.

I was returning my WiFi last night due to screen issues, they offered a full refund no fee. I asked to have it in Store Credit, he said he could do it, but made very clear, if I do so I could not purchase another iPad with that store credit  Kind of bummed me out as it takes a few days for the full credit to hit the bank account.

I got store credit for mine that was returned in early April. I confirmed with the store I'm at, that they could take my gift card (store credit), but I just have to pay at the POS terminal, and the manager wanted to see my receipt that showed the return for store credit.

I'm waiting for the 5 pm launch, but got this verified just now while waiting.

I don't like this news.

Where are my blood pressure pills....

I went in Wed's to buy my 16gb WIFI when I learned about this policy. I was extremely pissed off.I called once and asked in person if Cash was OK before I reserved it, I was told no problem at all. Then I go in and they tell me I'm SOL. Is it even legal for them to not accept gift cards?

The not accepting U.S. legal tender doesn't seem legal to me either. I thought a merchant *had* to take U.S. currency for goods.

Anyway, it is what it is... sucks.

It's a private business, they can legally turn down any form of payment.

...a potential sale, but if they decide to sell it to you then they must accept legal tender as satisfying your debt.

Fixed.

See link. There is no (federal) statute requiring private businesses to take cash or other forms of payment.

Wow, I hadn't read that recently, but I have read it. Either it has changed over the years, or my mind is deteriorating. Oh well, sorry, I was wrong, mea culpa, etc.

BTW it was a Complete NO GO on the embossed gift cards. I was prepared for that but there were several people who were planning to purchase via check or cash that were scrambling in line today. The gentleman with the check issue needed to write a check because the debit card at the bank only allows $500 worth of purchases / day, so I'm not sure how he fared in there.

In their haste to prevent scalpers I'm thinking they may have pissed off some of the customers they were trying to help.

Regardless, my iPad 3G 64 purchase went fairly smooth, no Camera kits, case selection was light and ended up buying MobileMe and so far not impressed.

The key is that so far I like the iPad itself, that's what matters :)

Retarded? That's a bit harsh. But I guess that "load of crap" line was a bit over the top. I just did a bit of searching after I posted this and there where some reports that Apple was doing this with the iPhone to track people who were just trying to resell it. I've never heard of such a thing before. I will definitely make some calls and see if any Apple stores in my area are enforcing such a ridiculous policy.

Having said that, I charge everything to get the SkyMiles. ;)

Well... I have to apologize profusely for my previous flippant and dogmatic assertion that every store on earth takes cash. When I went to buy my iPad, the Apple store would indeed not take cash. This is the first time in my life I've ever heard of such a thing. You learn something every day.

Super long thread, so if this has been said, sorry for the repeat, but I heard the reason for credit card only was to track iPads to users.

This way they can track the re-sellers, etc.

51% needs to be credit or debit card. The rest can be any method.

For the guy with the $500/day debit limit ... that's only if they run it as debit. If it has a Visa or MasterCard logo or whatever, they can run it as credit, avoiding that issue.

Keep your eyes on the evening news tomorrow. If they tell me that I can't use the $600 of MY money that they already have in their bank account to buy an iPad... I swear to god I will be arrested for smothering feces on every damn iPad I get near. I certainly don't want to spend my weekend behind bars... But it's not out of the question.

Translation: I can't afford a used Palm Pilot Pro let alone an iPad and I live with me old mum who makes me massage her feet every Tuesday night but if I yell loudly enough about this issue perhaps someone will pay attention to me on the internets.
