Logitech Options doesn't appear to update anymore. You get the notification that there's a new update, click install, and then nothing happens. Launching Logitech Options manually just gives the same notification and still doesn't do anything.
this is happening now with Mojave as well, at least to me

Path Finder 8.6 works for me. I'm running Catalina 10.15.1 Beta (19B77a)

I think so? I'll double check it when I'm home tonight, but I installed it and I feel like it was working.

I've noticed that Mac Photos Library hasn't updated since going to Catalina, so I think that's actually the cause and not Google Backup & Sync (which seems to be working fine). Anyone else having the Photos Library issue or a fix?

Onyx V3.7 for Catalina has been released:

Not sure, though, if I would use it yet. Last year, there were 2 "quick" updates to the Mojave version of Onyx before it "settled" down.

Still, though, it's encouraging to see the update.

I've used it several times without any issues. Seems to work as well as ever.

Not Working: Microsoft IntelliType
That means the media keys on Microsoft Keyboards (like the excellent Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000) are no longer recognised and no key events are caught by softwares like USB Overdrive.

USB Overdrive (the legendary mouse app) doesnt seem to work in Catalina.
Graphclick is 32bit and won't get updates so that won't work either.

Is this indeed the case that USB Overdrive doesn't work on Catalina??? This is a real dealbreaker for Catalina.

I spoke with Scansnap tech support and they say that a new app has been created ScanSnap Home, which is meant to take over for ScanSnap Manager.
But does not support ScanSnap S1500M. . . :( and to use the S1500M in the Catalina environment will require something completely different. Something called Vue Scan I think. Or use a different version of macOS. I currently have my older versions of macOS on an external drive. I cloned each version prior to installing a new version of macOS on my main drive. So, I have 12.6, 13.6, 14.6 cloned on an external drive, each is fully bootable ready to go. Now with SSD and USB3 externals booting to these legacy environments is at least tolerable, and useful in a pinch. Also cheaper than buying new hardware and/or software.

I used Vue Scan for over a decade until I purchased my latest scanner and I could not get VueScan to detect the scanner (a flat bed scanner). Now, I’ve not tried it on my ScanSnap, because ScanSnap Home works with my ScanSnap document scanner. And it’s been 2 years since I’ve tried to work with VueScan. Those document scanners are pricey, so I hope you get Vue Scan to work!

The VueScan software{hamrickdotcom} downloads ok, is 64-bit, and costs ≈$50 for standard and ≈$100 for pro.

Well gee whiz, I can run ScanSnap Manager in the 12.6 Sierra environment and pay ≈$0 since I already payed for the scanner it drives some years ago, better option for this retired old fart. 😄

Yeah, switching OSes' back and forth is not most convenient, but it is cheaper than buying new software.

Works for me. Only issue Ive had so far was Citrix, but I used that link in post 538 and it worked for me.
Yes it is working with Parallels Desktop very well. I am using version 14. Running quickbooks and other programs.

Anyone else having issues with Ookla SpeedTest (latest version 1.6)? All I get when I open it is this...non-stop, never finds my provider or server, both on WiFi or if I connect my MacBook Pro's to my AT&T iPhone 11 Pro Max:

Edit: I did a fresh install of Catalina on all my MBP's, and WiFi is working fine on all them, as well as when I connect to my iPhones Hotspot.

It still works for me, although it is much slower on Catalina. For some reason, it takes a lot longer to find a server.

I am sold out on using Photoshop-compatible plugins, so GIMP was dropped from my list early on.

This is an interesting issue and it raises some questions for me:

  1. Which third party extensions do you use?
  2. Are they one time purchases, purchases with paid upgrades, or subscriptions?
  3. When were they updated last?
  4. Have any been supplanted by functionality within the app itself?

That left Affinity Photo. As I told some folks over on the Affinity Photo support forum some time ago, it is indeed a nice, slick-looking program. However, the thing is, I have been a Photoshop user for many years now, since Photoshop 5.5 -- not CS5 -- when it was still delivered via CDs. Thus, I am obviously very used to Photoshop's layout and workflow. Affinity Photo's layout is quite different and takes time to get used to.

This will be the biggest barrier to switching for most people. Even if the new UI is better (maybe it uses a different paradigm or just was designed from the beginning with certain features that evolved in the legacy application and therefore are in odd places), it still requires work to learn it, and to unlearn the legacy application.

This usually means that there has to be a motivations other than just cost to make the switch worth it. Faster, more stable, support for newer technology (iPadOS, Metal, etc.), cleaner, less bloated UI, are all reasons that can drive a transition. If one uses a tool as a professional, the non-production time spent to learn the new tool often wipes out any saving. Even if one only bills at $25 an hour, a Photoshop subscription costs less than 12 hours of work time.

Please note that I did make an effort to learn Affinity's setup/layout and work routine using the trial app, and I did in fact learn how to perform some tasks. However, I realized that it would take me months to master it to the same level as I do with Photoshop. To be honest, I don't have that kind of time on my hands. I use Photoshop every day in the work that I do, so there was no time for a long learning period.

I am really curious what you do that you could not figure out how to do on Affinity Photo? I have watched some people make the switch and, while it takes a while for them to be completely proficient, they are pretty productive very quickly. However, given that Photoshop is a monthly subscription, it seems that one does not need to immediately make the switch. One could pay for as many months of Photoshop subscription while learning a new tool and switch when ready, as one would begin saving money from the moment one turned off the subscription.

But the straw which really broke the camel's back in my case was when I realized that NONE of my current Photoshop plugins work well -- if at all -- with Affinity Photo. NONE of them. These are standard Photoshop plugins which have been around for many years, and which I use daily in my graphics work, so I obviously depend on them a lot [emphasis added].

This is not so obvious. Without knowing what these extensions are, what they do and for what in your workflow you need them, it is impossible for anyone else to judge how dependent you (or anyone else) would be on them. You have stated that you have been using Photoshop for a long time, and have had some of these extensions for a long time. There are three reasons why, despite your use of these extensions, you (and others) might not need them:
  1. Their functionality may have been incorporated into the program itself (albeit possibly with a slightly different workflow needed).
  2. There is now a much better extension from someone else that solves the problem better.
  3. Despite your use of it in your workflow, it is not longer needed in reality (I remember that there were steps needed to properly prepare postscript files for Linotronics printing that were eliminated by improvements in Lino’s software, yet there were still quite a few people who ran them religiously).
they basically blamed the plugin developers for not making their plugins compatible with Affinity Photo.

Without knowing what the extensions are and without knowing what the specific issues are there are two parties involved in this process - the third party and Serif. The question becomes for whom is fixing this more important. Serif or the developer.

But the thing is, said plugin developers are unable to do that, because as Serif openly admitted to me in their forum, they have not fully implemented Adobe's plugin API in Affinity Photo. That being the case, how can Adobe plugin developers make their plugins fully compatible with Affinity Photo? They can't.

Again, not knowing any specifics, I can say in general you are completely wrong. It is very possible that third party extension developers can make their extensions work in Affinity Photo, with minimal work by working within the subset of the API that is supported. It is also likely that many extension developers are not even strictly compliant with Adobe’s documented API, but rely on edge cases or bugs in it for their extensions to work. From woking with other extension APIs, I can say that ensuring compatibility with more than one consumer of an API, often results in more stable extensions that are easier to maintain moving forward.

Besides that, they would rather devote their time and energy to improving and updating their plugins for the company that earns them the most money, and that is undoubtedly Adobe.

You might be right, or you might be wrong as to why third parties might not have made their extensions work with Affinity’s tools. While it is true that if their extension does not work in anything but Photoshop, it ”earns them the most money”, that does not mean that making it work in Affinity might not be a better use of their resources. Again, with no specific examples, it could be very little work for them to enable it and thereby open a growing new market, rather than surviving on new upgrade revenue. In addition, if users are not spending $10 to $50 a month on Adobe, they might have more money to invest in extensions.

Finally, new users - students, people just starting, etc. do not have the same connection to Photoshop as established users and may decide they like Affinity Photo’s pricing, iPad/macOS cross platform functionality, and interface and might not buy into Adobe’s market. It often makes sense to target these new users, rather than just selling to one’s established market.

they have no real intentions of implementing the full Adobe plugin API in Affinity Photo at any time.

That would not surprise me at all. Adobe’s API is old and crufty, having evolved over a long period of time. I would bet that most extension developers only use a small subset of it. It would make sense for Serif to implement the core that is used by most developers and then, over time, add to it as needed to support specific extensions or work with third parties to get them to use only things with in that subset.

This seems to be confirmed by the fact that a while back, I was reading on their forum that they are in the process of writing their own proprietary plugin API for Affinity Photo.

These two things are not at all related. They should develop their own API to allow developers access to their tools in ways that would not be possible for Photoshop, rather than be constrained by the design of someone else’s software. Given that they have a common file format for Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher it would make sense to have an API that was common to all three, allowing functionality that would work in all their applications and would take advantage of their unique features. Having done that, their is still a reason for them to support Adobe’s API as needed for specific cases.

That is obviously their choice, but I don't think it is very smart business sense to simply ignore the huge number of graphic artists who use Photoshop-compatible plugins. It is obviously a very big market.

As I mentioned already, not supporting all of Photoshop’s API does not mean ignoring graphic artists who use Photoshop-compatible extensions. They can address this in three ways:

  1. Implement the functionality of the most critical extensions natively in the application.
  2. Work with third party extension developers to get them to support the Affinity products using either Serif’s existing Photoshop extension API subset or some new API they produce.
  3. Add support for specific parts of the API needed by important extensions.

However, you have asserted two things for which you have provided no evidence other than your personal example: that there is a huge number of graphic artists who need Photoshop-compatible extensions and that it is a very big market.

I would bet that 95% of Photoshop users (graphic artists and others) do not use any extensions at all, but only Adobe’s stock product. I would also bet that most of those people who need these third party are not going to switch because they make enough money using the tool that it is not really cost effective for them. From a business standpoint, doing things to address the 95% first is much more important than worrying about the 5%.

But even if Serif is developing their own plugin system, what are web developers supposed to do in the meantime? Like me, they need their plugins working now, and not months or years from now when Serif completes their plugin system, and when there are actually plugins which will work with it, which fulfill the same functions as the current Photoshop-compatible plugins.

You have answered your own question. Use Photoshop and pay Adobe a monthly price until such point as you do not need to do so (either because Serif or someone else has the tools you need, you retire/switch careers or you die). The only advantage to the user of the subscription model is that there is no sunk cost you need to worry about. When you are ready, you just stop paying them.

In the meantime, you can contact the companies that make the extensions you use and ask them if they have considered making them available for Affinity Photo, or you can not worry about it at all and pay Adobe for the rest of your career.

The simple truth is that I have too much time and money invested in Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop-compatible plugins, to now just suddenly abandon it all.

There is no reason for you to “suddenly” do anything. Instead, you should slowly evaluate your workflow and see which tools you really still need and which might be replaced with other approaches (either extensions from other vendors or new techniques that are natively supported (by Photoshop or some other program). Subscribe to Creative Cloud, but play with other tools. Either you will eventually be able to move to something else, or you will not.

Generally, when I have to upgrade an app, I take a few minutes to see if it is still the best tool and approach for what I am doing. It may well be, but the world changes and we are often so focused on doing our work that we do not really notice new tools that might improve our lives.

I am very comfortable with using Photoshop. I have my workflow. So, I am just going to stick to what I already know. Likewise, in my opinion, despite its outrageous price, and hated subscription model, Adobe Photoshop still remains the best in its class.

You might be right that Photoshop is still best in class, but it still makes sense to reevaluate it and your workflow every once in a while.

I have an old Griffin RadioShark. The app is 32-bit so won't work. I can set it as an audio source OK, but no way to tune it, just get static. Any ideas, or is it e-waste?
