Catalina made my Canon Scanner useless

Hey,

I got a new mac pro and added my Canon Pixma 515 multifunction scanner/printer in the system settings. Printing works fine, but the device just doesnt show up as a scanner anymore. I was trying to download any drivers or software from canon but it says, that the printer is no longer compatible with Catalina. Was googling some more and it seems like because of the 64bit update, certain scanners are basically bricked.

Is this even possible?? Any advice?

The only "Pixma 515" I found was that one.

Sounds more like Canon made your Canon printer useless by not bothering to write a driver. Not trying to dump on you, I know it sucks (ask me how I know) but I think the blame belongs squarely with the manufacturer. Apple gave years of advance notice for the change to 64-bit only. Canon decided they didn't care.

The only "Pixma 515" I found was that one.

Have you looked into Vuescan? Think they've got a 64 bit version . Got my old Nikon slide scanner to work .

I have a really good Canon 5200f scanner. I used it a lot in Mojave with Vuescan because Canon gave up updating their driver for it a long time ago. Now in Catalina Vuescan can't see it. So I tried running Vuescan in Linux - still can't see it. I emailed Vuescan and the reply was they will not support this scanner on Linux. So for the past few days I have been trying to run Vuescan in Mojave to no avail. Running Mojave in a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop) doesn't see it either. And Mojave ran like treacle in the VM even though I'm using a MBPRo 2015 retina. I'm now downloading Mojave for the third time (?) because the installer doesn't like being used more than once it seems. Then I shall install Mojave on an external USB 3 drive. Then install Vuescan and hope it sees the scanner.

you might try ExactScan. Neither Canon scanner is listed in the Compatible section, but you might try anyway

You could try using the Image Capture app in your Applications folder to see if it will work with your scanner.
After you open IC check the Help Menu in the Menu Bar for more info on using the app.

Here is the list of officially supported Canon printers / scanners for Catalina.

You will probably need to buy a scanner that is supported under Catalina (doesn't have to be Canon) and use your multifunction scanner/printer as only a printer.

You could try using the Image Capture app in your Applications folder to see if it will work with your scanner.

It doesnt see the scanner.

This is so outrageous, whoever's fault it is. There's a 89$ app that enables the scanner again called vuescan, but I don't like how it looks and for 30$ more I can buy a new device.
The environment says thank you Canon and Apple for this!

What's really crazy is that on my old Mac Pro which I just upgraded from Mojave it still worked. Just on the new one, with a fresh Catalina Install I'm unable to add it. ARGH!

Works in Catalina on old Mac Pro but in Catalina on new Mac Pro it doesn't?

I got mine to work again in Vuescan by installing Mojave on a USB 3 stick. First thing (it won't work without) is to locate the old (32Bit in my case) driver. I found it via the Wayback machine on an older version of Cannon's site. Email it to yourself as a file. Boot up from the Mojave USB stick. Open a browser and download the driver from email account. Install the driver. Install Vuescan. Voila! it worked.

This happened with my Canon LIDE scanner after Snow Leopard. Canon wouldn’t write intel-native drivers for it. Will never buy another Canon scanner/printer again if possible.

Sadly this is one area that seems to bite Mac users, all too often older peripherals are no longer supported, whether the maker drops support or defers to Apple to support and it stops working. This happened to my older Epson scanner. It works great in Windows, but not macOS

I had a similar problem with my Canon printer/scanner and my 2015 MacBook Pro after I had performed a completely clean install of Catalina. Over WiFi, the Macbook would only see the printer New drivers etc didn’t make any difference. However when I connected the printer/scanner using USB, the Macbook saw both the printer and its scanner and set it up as an additional device. I then deleted the original (the one that the MacBook would only see as a printer) and after that the Macbook both prints and scans over WiFi. Odd, but at least it now works

What model Canon do you have ?

Canon's LIDE 110 (and up) scanners are supported under Catalina.

I have also had no issues with the LIDE series in Sierra, High Sierra, and Mojave.

I was just wondering the model was to see if it was on the Canon Catalina supported list.

The MG5500 series is but the MG5300 does not appear to be on the list.

Well - I got a USB cable for the printer and look at that, it gets recognized as a scanner again. But only if the cable is connected. Sigh. But ok, at least. Thanks for the advice!

Pleased that the USB method worked (well, sort of) but I should probably add that our other 2015 MacBook Pro (identical config) had no problem with seeing the printer and scanner on my Canon MG5300 under Catalina but that machine has never had a clean OS install since it was bought - all OS upgrades have been over the top of the existing system. The missing scanner problem only occurred with a clean Catalina install on my own machine. Don’t understand why but all is well - until the next time, no doubt.

however I needed a higher end scanner anyways so I got a new Epson V370, their apps are 64 bit updated.

I can still print with my Canon printer but I lost the ability to scan a few Mac OS versions ago. They haven't kept their drivers updated.

I too lost the ability to scan with Canon drivers a few versions ago but Image capture still works for me.

Only by cable, that’s what’s freaking me out. I never used any canon software before
