Only by cable, not wirelessly anymore.

Only by cable, that’s what’s freaking me out. I never used any canon software before
I can see the Canon MG5300 printer/scanner over wifi but......

What I did when setting this up was connect the Canon using USB. I then dragged the Canon image from the Printers & Scanners section within Preferences to the Dock. I can then access the scanner from the Canon icon in the dock when I want to scan. When I click on the Canon icon, it shows the scanner on the top right side.

The Image Capture app doesn't show the scanner and therefore I always this method when scanning over wifi.

Have you checked the printer setup?
Usually you set it up either for wifi or for ethernet.
On mine I can't have both.
I understand you haven't changed anything but I would definitely check that.

very sorry about the dead scanner:
you might try "Scanner Pro" $7.00 on your iPhone
?i think the functionality is free built into the Notes app too

You might want to invest in a new printer then spend money on a program to make you old printer compatible. Donate it to the Salvation Army or something and get a write off.

Here is the list of officially supported Canon printers / scanners for Catalina.

You will probably need to buy a scanner that is supported under Catalina (doesn't have to be Canon) and use your multifunction scanner/printer as only a printer.
Hmm, I have a Canon Pixma MX892 MultiFunction Printer/Scanner, and it's not on that list! However, I can use the drivers that come with Catalina for printing, and VueScan works fine for scanning tasks.

Hey,

I got a new mac pro and added my Canon Pixma 515 multifunction scanner/printer in the system settings. Printing works fine, but the device just doesnt show up as a scanner anymore. I was trying to download any drivers or software from canon but it says, that the printer is no longer compatible with Catalina. Was googling some more and it seems like because of the 64bit update, certain scanners are basically bricked.

Is this even possible?? Any advice?

You're twisting the meaning of the word "bricked" here. That applies to a device that does not work in and of itself in any circumstance. But I know what you mean --- your device doesn't work WITH Catalina.

You didn't indicate which scanner software that you're using. The software that comes with these devices usually works, but is horribly designed. Have you tried the simple, built-in "Image Capture" app on your Mac?

You also didn't indicate how you are connecting your scanner to the Mac. I've had problems seeing the scanner over the network when using a WiFi connection, whereas over USB worked fine.

Yes I never used any canon software, only the OSX scanning tool. It used to work, even through WiFi on my old Mac, even in Catalina, but on the new Mac Pro Since it was a fresh Install, it didn’t work anymore, just didn’t show the scanner anymore. Since I tried with a usb cable it works again through the app, but only with a cable attached :(

But the ability to use it is not based on support from Canon. It's from the Mac OS. I have bene using the built-in drivers (via the Mac OS) for at least the last 3 versions of the Mac OS.

Usually when they say that it is not supported, it will not work in all cases or the company hasn't tested it out.

People have different hardware and other programs running that might conflict.

If it works, great.

If it doesn't, the company doesn't want to hear about it :).

If I were you, I'd create a second boot partition and install Mojave on that partition, then boot to it and scan from there (if your scanner previously worked with Mojave, that is).

I have a very old Canon MX340, I started having issues loosing scan function with High Sierra, then I discovered that if you go to Apple for their latest Printer driver pack and manually install the new drivers with every MACOS upgrade all features return to operating normally. When you upgrade the OS for some reason the new drivers don't migrate. My old MX340 is working just fine; print and scan in Catalina. I recommend deleting the old printer before the driver upgrade. I don't recommend using the outdated printer drivers from Canon.

Inmy case, I have always done a clean, fresh installation of the newer Mac OS, then migrated/copied needed files, folders, apps, settings, etc. from a SuperDuper! backup. My Canon printer has always worked like a charm with each such OS, as has VueScan.

I also had a problem with the scanner of an canon Pixma mg5300 series all-in-one (wifi connected). IMac 2020 with latest Catalina version. I managed to solve the issue. What I more or less did:

installed the printer (Airprint)

Downloaded and installed last printer driver from Canon. Added 2nd printer (not Airprint; driver based)

After some time Catalina reported a updated driver for the mg5300 series; I installed it.

Again added a new printer (3rd configuration for the same printer); made this one my default printer.
If you now look at this printer (in configuration app) it has a printer and scanner tab. If you select scan, it works!

removed 1st and 2nd printer (optional).

The thing is, mine works again but only with a usb cable connection, not wirelessly like it used to.

Sadly this is one area that seems to bite Mac users, all too often older peripherals are no longer supported, whether the maker drops support or defers to Apple to support and it stops working. This happened to my older Epson scanner. It works great in Windows, but not macOS
I have a spare MacBook air just to use the HP 930 printer and canon scanner from 1999 which is a nose bleed to still get parts. luckily good ol snow leopard still likes these machines.
