I just bought a LIDE 400 and shockingly realized that it doens't just work out-of-the-box on macOS like my old LIDE 100 did.

Now I'm considering to send this back because if it requires a driver, I potentially install a lot of crapware on my system (their installer requires root access, even though it should be possible to make a drag& drop sandboxed app that can still access USB).

I'm currently running intel Macs, but if I ever switch to apple silicon, will this still work? Will Canon update their scanner software when there are macOS updates?

I wish I could just have my LIDE 100 fixed...

What scanner just works out of the box on macOS without potentially requiring crapware the will make it obsolete with the next macOS update? (I'm on Big Sur).

EDIT:

Weeee! The LIDE 400 works fine on Big Sur by simply adding it in printers & scanners in the system preferences. No crapware required!

i mostly scan invoices, reciepts and documents up to maybe ~20 pages. I found the iOS app "Scanner Pro" does a good job. I scanned a 100 page doucment with success no big.

Vuescan. It took lots of fiddling to get my scanner to scan because it is a commercial scanner with a million settings but I got it to work pretty well. I use it in conjunction with ABBYY Finereader for Mac
