I’ll join the chorus: long time on the Screen Time screen, then hung I’m Setting up, force shutdown and reboot and all seems to work. A browse of the system.log in Console reveals a mess of “Setup Assistant: phase is finished” repeated multiple times, as well as many classes implemented in two places.

Interesting -- I see similar messages when I ssh into the computer is that is still in the "Setting up..." phase.

It worked ?

What is "It"? Did Catalina install successfully with no long wait at "Setting up..."? Did "Setting up..." end on its own after a long time? Or did you do the force-reboot?

Adding my two cents. Same issue on MBP 13" Early 2015. A forced reboot allowed a normal startup. I did let it sit for probably 15-30 minutes though before finding this thread.

Same here. 2017 iMac. I finally got past all of that with a reset but now the iMac won’t stop locking up completely.

Same issue - held power off - restart and is working - also had the Apple ID issue - just signed out fully from iCloud - a bit of a PIA - but then signed in and all seems good now

Wow. Exact same here. 2016 15” MBP. Forced reset after being stuck for an hour and then finding this thread. Worked perfectly after restart.

Same here. Issue on 2013 rMBP.
Also said not to Screen Time.
Pathetic that this bug slipped through Apple QA.

Hah, and I thought Apple was just punishing me for not setting up Sharing of Analytics and Diagnostics..preparing to force restart. :)

>>Addendum<< Another successful restart - everything is working well including Photos, Mail, iCloud, etc.

Ok so I forced my MBA to turn off. Then turned it on again , it worked. I was scared to do it though.
After reading this thread, I did a forced shutdown, restarted, and now working like a charm. Thanks for the advice, all!

I’ll add to this.

2016 MBP w/ TB froze after clicking “Continue” on Screen Time set up screen, but after a few minutes went onward to “Serting up your Mac” screen, where it sat for 15-20minutes.

Did a force restart and everything seems fine, although my status bar wasn’t showing initially but showed after a 3 finger swipe up.

Also, did anyone else get a “Relocated Items” folder added to their desktop? It contains read me explaining what it is, and mine has a “Configuration” folder and a “Securty” folder. They look like they are system folders but theres no files in them. What do I do with these? Can I delete them?

Same problem on a Mac Book Air after the install - seemed to work after a reset. Then I started looking at things and was getting some funny responses - kind of like some settings corrupted. Among other things dock would not open. Tried restarting multiple times without any effect. I finally reset the PRAM (alt-command-P-R) and thinks started working again.

Not impressed with the process - but the OS seems to be functioning without any issues...

Unfortunately had the same problem on my MacBook Pro 13”, 2017 .

Left it for about 3 hours and then bit the bullet and did a forced restart.

Also very surprised this bug slipped through QA.

Hopefully no nasties show up later because we had to force restart it.

So far everything seems to be working okay.

Hi everyone. This is the first time since getting this 13” MBP with touch bar I’m having to do a hard reboot. How the hell do you do it with no power button?!? I read online somewhere to hold command-control-and the fingerprint sensor. It’s not working.

I'm experiencing near constant total lockups requiring a restart. On the plus side books finally works again. The new Music is always stuck on updating. Initiating sidecar when wired also crashed the iMac.

Same issue on 2017 MBP 13”. Thanks to these posts for reassurance, otherwise I’d be staring at the “setting up your Mac” screen.

For me there were some files, some of which were not visible to me because of the names or the user permissions. I went through them in Terminal but couldn't really make sense of them. I also browsed the "/Users/Shared" folder as well where they were located and saw a few other folders as well. At the end of the day they didn't seem to be useful. I did complete a full TimeMachine backup just in case and then dumped the lot of them. Working okay so far.
