I used the two commands to restore the drive and was left with something I've never seen before - a group, partition, and "failed" partition named "Macintosh HD", with the "failed" partition showing up in red. Attempts to repair the drive failed, and I couldn't delete the failed partition

I had a (slightly) similar problem. I couldn't delete or reformat an empty partition using PB3 (after a failed attempt of installing Windows through Bootcamp). I had to force-partition it using GPartEd. Luckily it worked without data loss. But afterwards it said that my recovery partition had been modified and no longer worked, so I had to remove it, which worked perfectly fine and gave me free space as expected.

Now I'm just wondering how to get back my recovery partition without reinstalling. Or maybe I should do a clean wipe when Yosemite lands officially.

issue with the bootcamp

hi guys
I had some issues with the bootcamp and not being able to partition it
and I got this error with diskutility as well and it says "This Core Storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group"

and I read this thread and im not sure about some things

first of all I dont know if I remove the yosemite beta partition will my os be ok?
because i have only one partition and its yosemite GM cadidate 3 and I want bootcamp very bad right now.
I read somethings about booting from external hard and install os again and bla bla bla and I dont think thats my problem.

I belive yosemite beta is the problem so what u guys suggest, should I remove the yosemite beta partition and then I will be able to partition with my bootcamp ? and my os will be ok? if no what should I do ?

becuase I saw some of u said it would be fine after the next updates and we are at GM 3 and the problem still remains unfixed do u guys think by oct 16 and the main version it will be fixed ?

tnx for your time :)

Yosemite turns the volume into a core storage volume tat cannot be resized normally, and that nay be what is going on with you.

Enter the line below in Terminal and post up the out put so we can see what is going on.

Code:
diskutil cs list

Try this in Terminal to turn off core storage.

I am not optimistic it will work though because normally it would say "yes" by Revertable: there and your says no for some reason.

Code:
diskutil cs revert 05B7A68E-39B8-48A3-96F8-A3C0D80C3AF9

sorry this may have already been covered in this thread, but Yosemite is around the corner and I'm currently running Mavericks. I know Apple will offer a free upgrade from it to Yosemite. BUT should I ever reformat my Mac Book Pro I'm told it will default to Mavericks not Yosemite.

If so is there a way to have Yosemite as the default OS after a reformat.

Sorry for the noob question.

This is what I was worried about when I mentioned that not revertible message earlier.

Let's step back. What exactly are you trying to get done? Do you just want to erase the volume or what?

Yeah... without erasing the disk and starting over, I think you are sunk at this point. I don't know how to undo that core storage once it is marked as no revert. beyond what we already tried.

Can you still boot to Yosemite install? You should be able to clone off the Yosemite install to an external the wipe the internal then clone the Yosemite install back to a non core storage format, then Bootcamp would work.

I don't see how a Yosemite update will fix this.

It depends on whether your Beta partition is on top or bottom. You can lose part of your HD if you remove the partition incorrectly.

With the final version of Yosemite being released today, can anyone confirm if this issue is still being seen with the installer?
