Don't recall seeing any rumors indicating we will see improved Face ID this year and I'm not expecting it, but if it DID show up, I'd be much, much more likely to upgrade from my 8.

Any indicators it's coming this year? I'm sure Gen 1 is fine, but we all said that about Gen 1 Touch ID and now nobody wants to deal with Gen 1 Touch ID because Gen 2 is that much better, so reasonably expecting the same performance delta for the next generation of Face ID.
The improvement will be an incremental update, which should be no big deal as this year is an “s” release. The “s” release is generally not a big deal. Apple generally saves the most exciting improvements for the third generation release.

Idk. Touch ID was an S release feature wasn't it?

Even if you didn’t and you woke the phone by pressing the home button it would unlock
Nope. Theres a setting ’Rest finger to open’. Just resting it wouldnt unlock it unless you have this setting ticked.

So you can view your notifications by resting and not clicking when having this setting off.

I don't think a 2nd gen FaceID is probably going to happen.

You’re probably right, and that could be a major differentiator for those who might want to upgrade from the 2017 iPhone X to the second GEN iPhone X, if the improvements are signifcant enough with the second GEN Face ID. And if there are no improvements that they don’t discuss for Face ID or are discovered later on for hands-on reviews, then I see all the more reason for first GEN iPhone X owners to keep their device assuming there is nothing major aside from that.

There's a significant amount of potential improvement from the OS layer (additionally amplified in later gen devices by faster processing speeds).

I was involved in some CV (computer vision) work, and even after the camera/optic hardware was locked down, we had several major breakthroughs at the software layer that greatly improved accuracy and speed.

I think it's likely due to the fact that they need it to work in landscape for the new iPad's. Unless this can be achieved through software.

I definitely want a 2nd gen to be in the XS since I might buy one too. Given the present rumors, I might end up pushing for a second hand iPhone X or a refurb one.

Until they add landscape unlock support and make it as fast and reliable as Touch ID I’m not letting go of my 8 Plus. My son has a X and more often than not has to use his passcode. Real step forward there Apple...

5s added Touch ID to begin with...6s added Touch ID gen 2. All the security improvements have come in “s” cycles.

its not like Touch ID. you dont have to swipe up to open the phone. faster Face ID will just be able to unlock faster but you still have to swipe up.
resting your finger on the touchid instantly opened the phone which was annoying to me.
You're right, I completely forgot that you have to swipe up.

If they don’t upgrade Face ID then I see no reason to purchase the 2018 X model. That’s the only thing that bugs me about the current X; it simply isn’t fast enough and is kind of clunky with having to swipe up to get to home.

They won’t allow it even with faster faceid. You’ll bypass all your notifications which most people don’t want. They might make it an option but I doubt it.
They might make it so if there’s no notifications then it will jusy to the home screen

Yes, they should make it an option. Hopefully that will be in iOS 12

im sure they will improve face id. its going to be an "S" model, this is the kind of upgrades "S" models bring

Hope so. Haven't really heard any rumors about a key/large S update feature. Sure hope just releasing the bigger screen model isn't 'the' feature for the year.

To Me, this is the most important factor when I upgrade this year. I really don’t care about just having a larger display and bigger battery for the 6.5 iPhone X, I want to know what Apple core feature with Face ID has been improved in some form or another. If they did make improvements, I expect them to at least demonstrate or discuss what they have excuted with this new future of biometric security.

Yeah, I agree guys. It’s certainly possible - let’s think back to when the iPhone 6s was revealed.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/science...et-look-identical-new-Force-Touch-screen.html

Most of the rumors at the time were regarding the 4K video recording, 12mp camera, the 2GB ram, and 3D Touch, which was referred to in the rumor mill as “Force touch”.

Many features were revealed in the keynote that were either not leaked or not heavily rumoured such as the faster wifi and LTE-A, the 7000 aeries aluminum, the Live Photo function, and comparably to what we are discussing in this thread, the second gen Touch ID

S models have always been more than only just speed updates, so I’m sure Apple will keep pushing forward

Good Chance that Face ID will be improved in iOS 12. They’ve already said that two users will be doable in iOS 12
So I would think that the overall experience will be much better

I’m actually thinking the 2017 iPhone X will be discontinued from their lineup, with the introduction of the 2018 iPhone 5.8 Being in place, with a possible lower starting price point.

I don’t think they will discontinue the X. They didn’t discontinue the 7s when the 8 cam out. They sold them for less. They didn’t discontinue the 7 when the 7s came out. Historically speaking it isn’t likely.

I can tell you why I disagree with your post. Because if the rumors are proven to be true where the 2018 iPhone X is slated to be dropped from the starting price point of $999 to $899, that means the 2017 iPhone X could not be in his existence, because Assumingly Apple discount that as well from $999 to $899, now you have two iPhone X’s at the same price. Which means, Apple likely discontinue the 2017 iPhone X altogether.
