I was just about to post the link in your 'EDIT 2' to http://osxdaily.com/2014/05/01/change-finder-dock-icon-mac-os-x/

I just found that and it worked for me. Haven't finished changing everything, but you get the idea (see attached)...

(Running OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 Beta)

First off thanks for everyones input in this thread as I found my solution through problem solving various options posted in here - I was most annoyed to lose my cherished Icons when I updated to El Capitan!

I followed all instructions on here and had zero luck with the manual way...I even copied the resource folder with my icons in it and replaced the one in the core system resource folder, but that didn't work either.

My solution was the following: My current build is OSX 10.11.2 and Liteicon 3.6.2

  • First boot into recovery mode (Restart and hold CMD + R) and disable the sytem security (this will make your machine vulnerable, so ensure that once finished, you re enable it)
  • Once booted in recovery mode, select utilities (Top left) and then Terminal - Type the following: csrutil disable
Note: You should get confirmation that system security is Disabled - press restart.

  • Once you have restarted, Open Liteicon and drag the required icons into their slot, then reboot your machine for them to take effect.
  • Check the icons have all changed and are the correct ones you chose and if you are happy, reboot the machine again in recovery mode as before.
  • Once in recovery mode, select Terminal again and type the following:csrutil enable
Note: You should get confirmation that system security is Enabled - press restart.
  • Reboot and check that all of your icons are still set to the custom ones you chose.
I am so glad to have my custom icons back... I agree, the stock set of blue is well out of date now, and I hope Apple go back to realising that The beauty of OSX is it was always designed for the end user to customise it....under Tim cook, it looks like we are going down the Windows route...sad days.

All I did was go to the "Get Info" and click on it. Go down to the bottom and unlock it with your administrator's password. There might be a little box down there that says "ignore ownership on this volume" click on it, and the icon will change. All of this system reboot and stuff is unnecessary, just unlock the folder.

I've tried that and sometimes it works. Other times it would show a blank icon. Not sure why

frustrating - copy and pasted jpg into the file box upper left get info etc. wanted to change look of the "pictures" folder for instance or Icon of a specific docx file - the result - on the cover of the folder I see now an icon with the letters JPEG but I don't see the actual picture !

Is there a limit to the size of the file maybe ? or any specific format not allowed ?
Using El Capitan latest version ,ac book pro 15.3 3 months old.

thanks for sharing

Just got a new Mac with El Capitan. Had for years done the copy and paste photos into the Info box without a hitch. Works fine in EC, too, save for the hard drive icon!

Discovered, however, that I didn't need to do anything special to fix it-- save for reboot the computer! Even though it had changed the Macintosh HD icon to a generic PNG type image, after a restart, it showed the photo I had pasted in!

No Terminal, no special command, just a reboot! Back in business.

Now, if Apple would only return to using the folder, document icons on the sidebar! With colors and images and all. And, use the garish labels with the entire field given a background color. The small dots are too indiscrete. (I realize it's to have multiple tags, but let the users decide how to do this. Many, if not most of us, do not use more than 1 tag on our files and folders.)

Overall, the interface is just so drab and gray!
