Check for Update -- still current :-(

Every day I connect my iPhone to the computer, open iTunes, and excitedly click "Check for Update", hoping a bunch of new functionality will come rushing into my iPhone. And every day, there's nothing. :(

I don't want much -- just the sort of features my first Palm Pilot had in um... 1996. Sync ToDo list and Notes, cut and paste between records and applications, search the entire device for text, the possibility of other applications being added to it. Sure, I'd also like some features that didn't yet exist in 1996, but I don't want to push it. ;)

Oh yeah... Steve :apple: said something like, "It is an iPod that can also be used as a telephone." So my expectations are completely unfounded.

But I'll keep dreaming. And clicking that "Check for Update" button.

Given the amount of little things that can easily be addressed in one update, It has surprised and annoyed me that no update of any kind has been released after almost 1 month on the market.

There was enough feedback on June 30th for an update.

Haha. Indeed! I am anxiously awaiting an update, but haven't ever clicked the "check for update" button. It will be on the internet before my "check for update" button works anyways, just like Software Updates always are mentioned on the web before they appear in my Software Update.

Oh, I know. I always see the Mac updates on macrumors.com before I actually get them. But I like to imagine that every time I click the button in iTunes, it pokes some important decision-maker on the iPhone team in the butt. :)
 
don't say anything until July 28th at 3:21am. Some guy who said he was the roommate of an programmer who knew someone who went out with a chick that used to work for apple's customer care support line, and HE said that an update will be out on the 28th.

I have no reason to doubt him.

True, if you think back, it seemed that everyone was positive there'd be at least a small update the moment they activated their new phones. After seeing the problems with mass activation, it's a good thing there wasn't.

My own nagging worry is that they've never tested a mass update. Worse, I was once in a situation where we discovered (after the product was out the door) that our update code didn't work quite right! I wonder sometimes if there's no update yet, simply because they can't do it. Nyahhhh. Can't be that. Of course, their current problems with new Java server code on Apple's discussion forums isn't giving me good vibes about their programming ability. (Joking)
 
I think they are waiting to put an update out that will add at-least one new Widget and or iTunes Ringtones and a butt load of fixes. So why are they waiting so long? Here is my theory:

They are waiting until sales start to show a certain percentage of slippage.

That would give the iPhone free positive press while over shadowing the fixes included in the update.

In my opinion there should have been an update Monday the 2nd addressing volume problems. But Im seldom right when it comes to Apple, one of these days I'll figure them out LOL.

I'm thinking you're correct, unless there's some huge security patch required.

I think some new functionality will appear once Leopard is released - probably becasue that new functionality dependent on features in Leopard somehow.

This might be true especially if they are going to be adding features to the iphone that will also be in leopard. But, considering there is also a serious security flaw that was just exposed recently you would think they would attempt to patch that up as quickly as possible. So, there might be a patch for the security flaw very soon and then more updates around the time leopard is released.

I have this ask this question though. Why can't apple just say when it's going to release an update?? They don't even have to say what it will contain. Just let us know when to expect it so we can stop hitting the "check for update" button over and over in iTunes. :)

Apple is perfectly right in not saying when they are going to release it.
Imagine they are working on it, and they are pretty much sure that it's going to be ready in the next 2 weeks. Cool, they say it and you + some hundred thousands people start to eagerly count the days.
Then in 10 days Apple finds out that something unexpected pops up -this can happen anytime-, and either their update is going to require more time, either they have to release a minor/unsatisfactory update. Either way, you and the people like you will complain like hell: either because "one month for this ridicolous update???", or either because "you said update in 2 weeks, 15 days have passed!!".

Without saying anything, instead, Apple will be able to release what they want, when they want, without anyone having any right to complain.
Plus, the people like you in the meantime will buy them some free advertising building hype/word of mouth.
There is not a single advantage in saying right now what they think they can deliver. Its much better to simply deliver.

Its a great marketing lesson Apple is giving with the iPhone. As a "marketing guy" working for a big company, im truly impressed by their discipline and planning capability. They really rock.

Well, there is a huge security patch that is required for the remote code execution bug in safari that allows one to read all your call and SMS logs, listen to your phone, etc. I would expect apple to fix this before it is made public at the security conference next week.
