Good call

I agree Civ II was the best probably.

Then Civ I and IV.

Civ III was the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen. I really pity the people for who that was their first Civ experience and then try to use that as a benchmark.

V is really starting to grow on me. I've played around 5 - 6 full games now and it's getting really good. On the higher levels, you really do have to be a war monger with the current AI which is unfortunate. It takes some getting used to for sure, but it's got some real strengths. I have it on PC and Mac, and the PC version is faster. C'est la vie.

I am enjoying playing CIV 5 on my brand-spanking new iMac 27" (installed with my Steam account, which I had on my PC, so I didn't have to purchase again).

I miss the worldbuilder (hell, I miss the cheats provided by the worldbuilder).

How does Civ 5 run on the new 2011 iMac? I'm trying to decide whether to buy the base 27" or the i5 27" with the better graphics card. Would the base model handle Civ 5 with ease? Your comments are appreciated.

Get the best graphics card you can afford. The 1 GB of VRAM would be extremely beneficial for a 2560 by 1440 resolution. 512 is kind of paltry these days.

I don't really follow the 'buy the best you can afford' model, I prefer to buy what I need. So, would the base model run Civ 5 with ease?

don't buy this pile of poo. Got a brand new imac with all the trimmings, and extra memory. Got Civ 5 from Steam. Worked great...until today.

Then (you just knew it was coming, after all, only the games i like never seem to work properly):

Civilization V quit unexpectedly.

Truly I hate games today. All of them have glitches...you end up spending more time fixing issues than playing.

Worst of the worst was SimCity 4.

Give us more information and we may be able to help you. Does this happen when you start up the game? Every time? Have you looked for similar issues at Aspyr's support site? Have you opened up a ticket with Aspyr and sent them your crash log?

Thanks!

Yes.

Have you looked for similar issues at Aspyr's support site?
Yes. Many have encountered the same issue.

Have you opened up a ticket with Aspyr and sent them your crash log?
I will do so. I do believe the crash log was sent to Apple.

It is bugging me...I was having so much fun with my empire, got until about 1890 and argh!!

If it would be anywhere, it would be on Steam. I haven't seen a Mac demo floating around, but maybe that's because I started playing it on a PC first.

Civ 5 (Campaign Edition) is now available on App Store and does not require Steam. Having great fun, but not yet convinced it is better gameplay than Civ 4.

Civ V Crashing on late model MBP -- any ideas?

I have a 2011 15" MBP. Running latest build of OS 10.6.7.

Relevant specs:

Model: MacBookPro8,2, BootROM MBP81.0047.B0E, 4 processors, Intel Core i7, 2.3 GHz, 8 GB, SMC 1.69f1
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M, AMD Radeon HD 6750M, PCIe, 1024 MB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000, Intel HD Graphics 3000, Built-In, 512 MB
Serial ATA Device: TOSHIBA MK7559GSXF, 698.64 GB

I always had some issues with Civ 5 freezing and not performing great on this machine -- issues I never had on my 2010 iMac, which plays the game a bit slower but at least it's stable.

However, the issues got a lot worse after Aspyr's latest patch for the game, which I think was partly intended to address problems with the AMD Radeon 6750M.

Initially when I contacted Aspyr about this problem, they said they didn't support that GPU. But recently the game has been crashing after every 1-2 turns (late game, on lowest graphics settings in smallest Windowed mode).

The (abbreviated) crash I get is this:

> > Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
> > Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000

When I last contacted Aspyr, they suggested I delete the Civ5.plist file. I did so, and it made no difference. Did one better and I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Civ V in Steam - still made no difference.

Please help!! Anyone have any idea what this issue is? Is it just a buggy port without proper support for this GPU? The processing power on this machine should be able to handle a game like Civ V without skipping a beat. But when the game is playing, the laptop heats up and internal sensors are showing about 175 degrees on the CPU, fans at maximum.

Thanks for any suggestions!

-Logan

I hope you get your issue fixed. But the only way that software will ever be improved is if the software producer feels pain. Aspyr or whomever is responsible for the software must pay to make it work, otherwise they'll have no incentive to make it work. I'm sure they're nice guys and want to please and support their customers, but when management says "ship", you ship. Until management feels that pain, through poor financial results of "ship" before it's ready, we'll be having this conversion for the next 100 years.

The campaign edition is a ripoff. Same price, lack of multiplayer because there's no steam. Not to mention, you don't get the PC version which runs decently.

Granted, the multiplayer is broken anyway, but if they are going to release a version with less functionality, they should lower the price.

I've said it before:

I will never buy another Aspyr game again.

There are bugs in Civilization V that can be seen still today, using the latest patch, in Civilization IV even! What has Aspyr learned over the years? Nothing, it seems! (For example, cmd-tabbing kills the cursor, and the shadow on the cursor is thick black instead of transparent like in Windows).

Also, I was in contact with Aspyr support for months regarding my inability to set shadow detail to High in the game, and they claimed that it was because my Macbook Pro wasn't supported (at the time, it was the latest version of the hardware released). Now I know that was a blatant lie, because I began playing the windows version and found out the truth.

Here's the deal:

There can never be High detail shadows in the Mac version of Civilization V, because they don't exist in the DX9 version of the game, which is what Aspyr ported. Yet, on the Mac App store, they clearly show high detail DX11 screenshots (unit shadows visible, for example).

Any Aspyr ticket I file these days goes unanswered.

So screw them. They lost a customer and for the first time since I switched to Apple, I'm telling people that unless it's Blizzard, Valve or small indie games, boot camp is the way to go for playing games on a Mac.

EDIT: Oh, and how long have they promised cross platform multiplayer compability? Nooo, screw customer support, unit sales is all that matters.

I haven't had a single problem with Civ V on my iMac. Great game btw.

yep... I've run it on 3 different Macs and it runs just fine. not sure why so many people seem to complain about problems... I wonder if there is some common 3rd party software/utility people are installing thats interfering or something.

Civ V on a MB Air

Anyone play CIV V on a new (mid 2011) Macbook Air 13" 1.8 i7.

Is it worth it, or should I stick with Civ IV

I've tested it on an 11 inch MBA. It'll run on minimum settings and smaller maps, but I don't think it's a configuration we'll support.

Civ V has been patched to match that on the Windows version!!!! Thank you.

Was able to join a game with my windows friend breifly before work to see if it worked.
