Clarification from Craig Federighi on Universal Control

I am still a bit confused about this. I am using an external display with my Mac Mini. How would they implement this feature such that window arrangement is not necessary? It IS every single time unless you would tolerate the cursor emerge out of anywhere.

I thought it used the beamforming microphones and a out-of-hearing range stereo sound to detect the side of the screen the iPad was on automatically. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that advanced, even though the system requirements seem to be very high for this feature.
