The only people advocating cash these days are people who obtain it through unmoral routes.

Granted, there are some true cash believers out there, but the majority is drug dealers, bribe recipients, etc.

Either way, taking advantage of the warranties offered by credit card companies is a good idea.

Lucky for CNN there wasn't any real news to report. Stay tuned...tomorrow they investigate why the iPad doesn't come with earbuds.

One of the issues you do not have to deal with when using cash is the possibility of your # being stolen and/or your identity being stolen and all of the hassles that come with restoring your good name. And no it has not happened to me.
What happens to being able to access your money when the electric grid goes down?

After that, they're gonna do a story where that little ole lady can't watch her guitar lesson video's because they're in FVM. She'll then end the segment with "Give a sista a break and let me use flash"

Not a big fan of the policy. I think there could be other ways to accomplish the end result without alienating legit customers. Im more upset with the fact that they dont publicize this policy until you pull out the wod of cash, then its like "uh, dont you know?....we dont take cash, Sorry!"

to those saying she should pay a stranger to buy it... I could see issues with her that. what if she has to return it for some reason? the money goes back on the card. has the potential to be aggrevating.

I say get a bank account and a debit card. If not, get one of those pre-paid credit cards I see advertised on TV during the day.

Ridiculous.

I paid for my Macbook Pro in cash. I like cash. It's anonymous and untraceable.

They should like cash too because they don't have the credit card fee overhead.

+1

I had the same problem. I had just sold some stuff on craigslist and enough cash to pay the entire amount. I was just lazy and didn't go by the bank to deposit it before picking up my 64g 3G iPad. When I got to the store they said I couldn't pay in cash. I told them to keep the iPad and I could live without it. The employee told me to wait, and when he came back he asked if I could pay 1/2 in cash and 1/2 with a card. I could have easily put the entire purchase on my card, but this pissed me off!. I told him I would pay $700 in cash and the balance with my card. He had to get "approval" from the manager to make it happen.

Not Really News

This policy has been discussed ad infinitum. It's legal, there is good reason for it, and will eventually go away with the international release. If she had really done her research, she would have known this. I think she may have just been looking for an opportunity to be on TV.

While I feel for this lady, I have to wonder how she would have felt if she'd been mugged on the way to the Apple Store. It's unsafe and somewhat silly to carry large sums of cash anymore. There's no reason she couldn't and/or shouldn't have used a debit card. Even if her debit card had a daily limit of less than the total purchase, she could have used an apple store gift card for the balance. Despite claims to the opposite, Apple will accept gift cards towards 50% or less of the purchase of an iPad.

So you bought one after your bluff worked, proving you really couldn't live without it.

The policy sucks. Do you really think it's keeping people from buying more than 2? eBay, Craig's List and forums have no shortage of units for resale. All the policy does is give Apple bad press and piss off customers.

Today's CNN has a spot about a lady who saved up cash for an iPad, only to be told she couldn't buy one that way.

Okay, this is awful that she can't buy an iPad with cash, but I can see why Apple is doing it. There is currently very little supply and huge demand (especially overseas) and they need to track the purchases of each customer to make sure they only buy 2 until Apple can stock the shelves enough to where they are constantly in stock then they will accept cash.

In the mean time, couldn't she go get a prepaid VISA gift card and use that to buy the iPad? I know you can't use an Apple Gift Card, but a prepaid VISA gift card is exactly like a debit card. It even says debit card on the actual card.

Just an idea.

No, a VISA gift card won't work as it's not linked to a specific person, just an account number.

Read that again. He bought one after they agreed to his stipulations. He was prepared to walk away unless it was on his terms. Not that difficult to understand.

Ridiculous for her to call 7 on your side over this. Apple is doing nothing unethical. I suppose this lady who supposedly is on low income pays for a broadband connection in her house plus a wireless router even though she didn't have a computer before she bought the iPad that she saved months to buy?

It's unfortunate but retailers can choose to place as many restrictions upon the purchase of items from their stores as they choose.

If individuals are unhappy about it they don't have to buy products from those stores. If enough people stop purchasing then this will have an impact on the retailer and they will quickly change their policies.

In this case, it's a hot item being sold so the retailer has the power to sell the item in any way they so choose without it impacting on them (in the short term).

It's pathetic that this is newsworthy.

Further, anyone with Google could've found Steve Jobs' statement on the matter- clearly, CNN didn't Google it.

Also, Apple is doing the lady a favor. You need a credit card or debit card to use the iTunes Store, even if you're only downloading free apps. You think she's angry that she can't buy an iPad without a credit card? Just imagine the story if she bought an iPad and then couldn't get any apps for it without a credit card!

Not really true. You can purchase things on iTunes using an iTunes gift card with no credit/debit card attached to your account.

Yeah. Sure he was.

Fact is, they told him he couldn't pay for one entirely in cash, and he caved to their demand to have part of the purchase method be traceable. Not that difficult to understand who won the battle here. Apple has his money, and they got what they wanted in terms of being able to control number of iPads sold per person.

You would think that instead of making a big hoopla, if someone in the press really wanted to help, rather than report a story to get ratings, they would just have used their own credit card to buy the woman the ipad and have the woman pay them back. But I guess that's too complicated for today's press. Instead she now has "to wait for apple to take cash for her ipad." Really? Whatever happened to common sense.

REALLY? You asked that question of the press. The same press who let starving children die in front of them in Africa, just to take photos and report the "News". But in doing so that news makes people aware and puts pressure on the help thousands of others.

Also the press is about 2 things;

1> Making big hoolpas about things to gather interest in the readership

2> Making money from advertising to the large readership they created from aforementioned "hoopla"
