College Students: Post your Mac Setup!

I'm going into College in the fall and am still contemplating my Computer set-up. Thought it would be cool and helptful to see other students mac setups out there.

I know school is out for most, so finding dorm pictures may be hard, but post whatever you have! Post pictures, or just tell us what your setup is! Please however, limit this to college students.

Haha, I'm an absolute minimalist when it comes to college dorm rooms, so my room stays boring all year. My side of the room, anyway.

Guess this thread will die a early death, and it's only hope is a bump come September. What a cruel poster, you are Topic Starter!

I used to sleep in one of those raised beds at home. Pretty cool unless you're really drunk or when you fall out. Make sure you make a clean fall if you do, hitting your desk chair doesn't feel nice, it woke me up before i hit the ground though...

No, I was never in a frat house. My roommate and i just liked to cram a lot of stuff into our room at the time ( we had a full couch, a small recliner and a coffee table + plus our two beds, desks, and dressers). Growing up I had my bed raised, so it wasn't new to me to sleep in one. The bed setup on the left freaked a lot of people out because the only place it was touching the wall was at the head, both sides were open to me possibly falling out. I never once worried about falling out. On the nights were I might have drank too much, I would sleep on the couch.

1) new 12" powerbook hooked up to my 19" dell CRT. Also external Apple Keyboard and Mouse. JBL Creature Speakers.

2) 15" Powerbook alone.

The problem I'm having with option 1 is when I stayed overnight for orientation, I realized there was not a whole lot of room on the desk to have my Powerbook and a big ol' CRT. So, that got me thinking that the 15" powerbook would be a better, more simpler setup that would take up less space.

I'd go with the 15" too if I were you. I would much rather have a 15" then a 12" period, but I'd espically want to avoid a CRT monitor. I had a 12", and all I thought about was how nice a 15" would be. So, I traded my 12" for a 15" and I'm very much happier.

I have to share a dorm this year , and I've got a 1.6m x 0.5m desk to play with.

I'm hoping to have a shiny new iBook to put on it, next to the dull laptop (that's a triple entendre ) I currently own. The campus is covered by wireless internet (all 802.11g), and the dorms have wired GIGABIT .

I'm thinking of getting an airport express to serve as a print server (HP LaserJet) and private basestation... is this a good idea, or should I worry about interference with other wireless networks?

I'm not allowed to have a stereo (too loud - it is a "quiet" floor), so I'll make do with headphones (Etymotic isolators, at that).

As far as gadgets and accessories go, I think I'll stick with the bare minimum.

Dont have any pics of my dorm setup, but its cramped. I had a PMG5, iBook and 15" LCD crammed onto a tiny desk along with other miscellaneous junk. When I return to college, I'll try to figure something out to improve desk space, I just got too lazy last year to move anything on the desk besides my mouse around.

Wireless (provided by IT) is nonexistant in the dorms but the Airport card in my PMG5 covers pretty much anywhere I want to take my iBook on the floor. Unfortunatley, only 10 mbit ethernet, but our internet speeds are capped at 3 mbit, so no big deal. However, there is a campus p2p network, so 100mbit would be nice

That's a nice looking room/setup, but I'm curious if the air unit you're sitting next to has any adverse affect on your computers. Or do you just enjoy the refreshing air blowing on you!?

Id think if anything the air would help keep the computers cool in the summer.

yeah, I keep my computer in a back room of my apartment and have to keep a fan blowing in on it 24/7 or else it'd get hawt...

Dude that looks like a coil, hot water heater. Dont think any cool air comes from that old thing. Hint, he's not staying in a house, its a dorm. So when a vent like that is coming up from the floor, its a heater. Thats my guess, as old apartments always used this method.

Last year's setup (though I'm keeping that room). Pretty basic, but this was at the beginning of the year...by the summer it was quite cluttered.

Plus, a few weeks after moving in they installed a giant, metal pole/outlet in the middle of the wall behind the keyboard w/o telling me.

Full Room (w/ simple computer setup)

Setup's simply:
800 MHz G4
768 MB RAM
40 GB HD (now 300 GB)
Mac OS 10.2.8 (now 10.4)
Wired to the ethernet (since the outlet is right behind the desk), and uses an Airport Extreme to send data to the printer (which is on top of the fridge in the closet )

Not much, but plenty good for gaming online and listening to music. Oh, and doing homework.

its messy cause i took these pictures the day i moved in. I was originally in a triple in the old dorm, and their was no room for a 3 desk...so they moved me.... (i'm keeping the same room for next year )

I got lucky. The college purchased an assisted living building mid-year and offered it to students after the next year's room lottery had been given. Fortunately, no one ever checks their college voice mail . It used to have lounges on each floor, but all but one's been converted to a classroom. Still, there were only 40 people in the building. It was supposed to be temporary housing, but since a townhouse building plan was rejected by the city council, it's becoming more permanent. Luckily for me, I choose one of the smaller rooms (third floor has their own bathrooms ), so mine can't be converted to a double (like some other unlucky residents I know).

Strangely appropriate. First year - triple, second - double, third and beyond (hopefully) - single.
