I say OS Ex, and I don't care what you all think is right.

Same. Why should I care what Jobs calls it?

Whenever I hear people say "o s ex" it makes me want to punch them in the head.

Whenever I hear someone say that the way other people do something makes him want to punch them in the head, it makes me want to punch him in the head.

Seriously, why would you care?

If they wanted me to say "OS 10" then they should have written "OS 10"!

But they didn't. They wrote "OS X".

And before you get started, this isn't Rome, and even the Italians don't write their numbers like that anymore.

This'll be put to rest when OSXI comes out. But seriously, 7,8,9,"ex"? There are still 4 days to April Fools, you guys. ;)

Umm sure man. I call an iPod an iPod because I know how to read. I guess unless I called it a '1 Pod'.

You could read without say "i" then "pod", you could pronounce the "i" as a sound instead of the name of the letter.

But you know how Apple says it, as since its their product, they make the name.

people that pronounce it as "mac oh-es ex" are the ones that type MAC, MAC OSX, IMAC, Itunes, Iphone etc.

you dont want to be one of those people do you? then pronounce it as "mac oh-es ten".

That's a wonderfully sweeping generalisation - it's this sort of arrogance on this site that's starting to annoy me.

There seems to be too many pedants here nowadays.

Surely that site is about Apple products, not pronunciation.

I know it's technically OS Ten, but if they wanted me to pronounce it that way...

1) Write it OS 10
OR
2) Should have written OS VIII, OS IX, earlier

If there's an OS XI I'll call is OS Eleven, but until then, it's OS "Ex" to me. It just makes it clearer it's a different, Unix-based operating system than everything that came before it.

Does it really matter? o.o'

I'm pretty sure El Jobso has called it either.

OS X does roll off the tongue better though.

Oh Ess Ecks? That's the opposite of "rolls off the tongue."

And El Jobso has ALWAYS called it "Oh Ess Ten," because that's it's name.

Honestly, this shouldn't even be a debate, because people who say "Oh Ess Ecks" are wrong. It's not a big deal, lots of people are wrong about a lot of things.

Buzzzzz. Oooooh, incorrect, wrong answer! But we have some lovely parting gifts for you, and please feel free to play again at a future date!

I always say OS X, and always type those other things correctly.

You just know they'll call it "OS X II"

That would be "Oh ess ecks eye"

I'll continue to say 'OS ex'.. previously for the very reason I pronounce fsck as 'f-suck'... but now an added benefit is that it obviously gets some peoples goats. woo! ;)

I dodge the issue and call it MacOS when saying it out loud. The old one I refer to as Classic MacOS if I want to differentiate the two.

It's OS Ten, but what's it matter?

Not really, but when were talking about it, it seems like a good place to bring it up.

I'm certianly not going to not help someone because they say OS EX vs OS 10(coming from Windows "X"P, I assumed it was OS EX until I was told better....and I now try to say OS 10)

Well I never thought this thread would be about, what it is about. Really funny reading through too. I say whatever pops into my head, if indeed I have to mention it at all. Mac suffices most of the time cos most don't care.

I understood perfectly from the start that it was a roman numeral and indeed I have been known to even say X when explicitly using roman numerals. I do however use 10 when being more precise to say something like, '10.5 is Leopard.

Using 'X' as a number is pretentious, especially when none of the other systems used roman numerals. Isn't that the point though? As it incites riots in the forums.

Sometimes, I make up words. Just for fun!

No, because this has an answer, the company who makes it, and names it, calls it OS 10, anything else is incorrect.

Plain and Simple.

And this thread is here to teach people that

If everyone's getting this serious, its pronounced:

O S Ten point five point two.

If you're still using OS X or ten or whatever... You're soooooo behind the times.:D

If Apple were less creative, they'd call it OSX Xtreme Edition, or OS X^2 or OS XX or OS Core II X, or OS X Reloaded.

Does that mean we'll eventually see Mac OS XXX Hardcore Edition? :D;)

So why is this thread approaching 50 posts if it's so cut and dried?

Because it's not. It is cut and dried that the X does technically refer to the number 10, and that the technical name is OS Ten.

But it's dumb to say that it has to be pronounced that way, especially when there are plenty of good reasons to pronounce it the other way. We all know it's OS Ten. I still have my reasons to pronounce it OS Ex. Why does it matter how we pronounce it?

I pronounce it "Oh Ess Ten". For a few reasons.

The word "ten" sounds more like a terminating word to me. It will end the sentence and end the word faster. X, as in "ex", kinda drags on. "OS Exxxxxxxxx..."...it just doesn't seem right in my language. But thats just me. :p

I don't called Final Fantasy X "Final Fantasy Ex". Therefore, same rules apply to OSX.

"10" seems to fit, seeing as how it came after OS 9. The X is just a fancy roman numeral that looks cooler. Just seems logical to think of it that way for me.

Or, ya know, we could all be wrong and it could be "Osssixxxxx".
