Is it OK if I use the 2, mini 6 pin to 8-pin cables(that come with the card), plus POWERLINK? I have 2 mini 6 pin to 6 pin as well but I'm just asking for compatibility. Thanks.

Yes, PowerLink accept whatever combo of 6 and 8-pin inputs, internally everything is connected to just one 12V power rail.

Is it "safe" to run a 970 as boot volume next to the fans of a 580?
I run both Samsung 970 EVP Plus and a Samsung 970 Pro on AngelBird Wings PX1 PCIe Cards they seem happy.
The RX580 draws air past them so as long as you get a NVME PCIe Card with good Heatsink and use the best thermal transfer tape you can get you should be fine.

For a simple method of turning a cMP into a raging GPU compute demon , just drill a few holes into the side access panel , add a 1000W external PSU and snake the 8 pin PCIe power booster cables inside . Just make certain that external PSU is turned on before you boot up the Mac . This will easily push dual 300 W GPUs .
