Yup.... I don't agree with removing/reducing bezels at the detriment of functionality. A larger screen is no use if reduced bezels mean you cover up the extra screen with thumbs/fingers etc. Reduction of the top/bottom bezels would be the obvious, less impact choice, as long as there is no notch.

How exactly would increasing screen size but keeping the same physical size of the ipad be a detriment to functionality? I for one would love more screen space without increasing the bulk of the ipad. How big are these peoples thumbs fingers you speak of that would suddenly be blocking the screen? Are you talking about Muppets? Lol. Seriously. No offense, but removing or slimming the bezels will not result in fingers blocking out huge portions of the screen. Again, More screen in the same size package is a GOOD thing.

For the reasons I stated. If the screen increases and the overall size of the tablet doesn't, then the bezel has to reduce. That's cool as long as it doesn't mean it's reduced to the point where the part of the screen where the bezel used to be, doesn't get covered up by your thumb when holding it. I didn't say huge portions of the screen. It's really not a hard concept to grasp, and I'm glad you feel it would work for you, but Apple are interested in selling more than one iPad and I assume there are more people who feel the same. I for one would like to see a higher resolution on the same screen size, more icons on the home screen, etc ....

Oh i grasp your concept. I just don’t agree with it. And I doubt Apple would be selling a bezel-less iPad to just me. I would argue that a majority of ipad users would welcome such an ipad. I still don’t get your concern about how slimmer bezels would effect functionality. The ipad mini and 10.5” ipad pro already have VERY thin side bezels and there is no problem with fingers getting in the way. I’m sorry, but i can’t even imagine how reducing the bezels all around would be a bad thing or ruin the ipad experience in any way.

I think the one thing I would be concerned about is the Apple Smart Keyboard. The width of the 10.5” iPad in landscape mode is JUST big enough to make it feel almost like a full sized keyboard. In my opinion, it’s very close in size to my Magic Keyboard that I use with my Mac. I always felt like the 9.7” model was too cramped to type on for extended periods of time, either on the screen or on the ASK. With the 10.5” iPad Pro, I’ve become a much more frequent screen typer and much more frequent keyboard user.

HOWEVER, I recently ditched my Apple Smart Keyboard for the time being and have been using a Zagg Rugged Messenger keyboard case instead. I much prefer the design, form factor, and key travel on this case than on the ASK. I don’t see going back to the ASK anytime soon, given how impressed I am with the Zagg. But if I were still using the ASK, I’d be very concerned about even a minimal reduction in landscape width, as it would negatively affect the typing experience. It seems like they want to go back to a 9.7” sized chassis, and I always had to angle my hands in an uncomfortable way to type at full speed on that keyboard.

I do wonder if maybe Apple has a major ASK redesign in the pipeline for the new models and that they’ve somehow figured this issue out. Maybe something you don’t have to do so much origami with and that folds flat up against the screen without a “hump”.

It’s be nice to have a real smart Smart Keyboard for a change. Backlighting , function keys, slightly
More travel. Make it thicker. Sell both. Give us a choice.

You assume the screen size won't change. Apple could simply increase the screen size without changing the overall physical length of the device... although if that happens the width will have to increase as well to retain the 4:3 aspect ratio.

That’s what I’m thinking . I literally didn’t mean no bezel at all, but just enough to hold but thin enough where it just blends in to the screen.

Yes, unfortunately the title suggests otherwise.

Frankly the mock ups here look fine to me: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/07/28/ipad-pro-2018-models-no-headphone-jack/

Then let's start with this thread.

@sparksd @kasakka @MrGimper @thisismyusername Do you think the bezels in the photo I posted are too small?

I don’t think they are too small at all, in fact t I would be perfectly happy with it.

But I would wager a brand new iPad Pro that many will complain right after the keynote the bezels are too thin lol you know they will.

And I bet many others will complain that the thinner bezels are still too big! Lol. I’m just excited for new iPad pros.

I’m happy with those bezels. Look about the same as the 10.5 pro bezels, but all around.

And certainly not bezel-less

You understand bezel-less doesn’t mean no bezel at all right?

I don’t even think it’s possible to make it actually bezel free.

But I could go a little thinner and still be fine. The way I hold and use my iPad I simply just don’t touch bezel, unless I’m putting it down or picking it up.

Those look good to me - definitely not "bezil-less". I also like the absence of a notch in that photo.

Edit: That looks like (my current) 10.5 , but with the screen extended at the top and bottom.

I have an S7 Edge with no side bezels and other designs could support no bezels so I read Bezel-less as no bezels.

It's interesting that the same article notes that the smart connector may be at the bottom (vertical orientation ASK?) and that face ID is portrait-only.

Hello all...just trying to wrap my head around an ongoing complaint that keeps popping up around a bezel free iPad. Seems lots of folks here and online are hating on the fact the iPad is most likely going bezel free..

They just can’t imagine how to hold something like that maybe?

Who even holds their iPads by the bezel? Like holding a paper map lol? I’ve always held my ipads the same way.

My left hand behind the iPad while it rests on my pinkie finger from the right hand..I also use my additional fingers from the right hand resting against the back for more support if needed.

My hands and fingers don’t even touch the bezel. It’s a non issue on the iPhone X too. Now granted I’ve never held the bigger iPad that is being reduced in size greatly.

Half the time the iPad is sitting on my desk propped by a Smart Cover.

There really hasn’t been any solid evidence confirming anything yet, and we don’t even know if Face ID will work in both portrait and landscape.

But the less bezel the better imo.. and stop holding it like a steering wheel lol

I agree I never hold it by the bezel. I always hold my iPad from the bottom usually and my fingers in the back

That part of the rumor is ridiculous and obviously wrong. There is no way Apple is expecting people to only use their iPad with keyboard in portrait mode. Not with a device that’s constantly being marketed as an alternative to laptops for some users. I’m surprised at how many people are accepting that as legit.

I agree that doesn't make sense but we readily accepted the mockup photo element.

My expectation is both styles of iPads will be sold, perhaps with the lower cost non-pro versions keeping the larger bezels. Search Google Images for “kids holding iPads” and it’s pretty darn clear why bezels are important for those who need to hold the ipad more securely by utilizing them rather than relying on just the very edges of the screen. It’s not a myth, it’s not people holding it wrong, it’s an honest to goodness necessity for people who are using the device in a way that is intuitive to them.

I’d love to see a thin bezeled iPad Pro on the market. Not sure if I’d buy one but obviously there’s a large market for it so why not - just like the iPhone X. I don’t need to understand why people don’t hold their devices the same way I do - i have no desire to dispel how they hold or use their device and I have no shame in how I hold my device. Fact of the matter is they have a legit desire for what they want and I have a legit reason for what I want.

Here’s hoping the 2018 ipad with pencil support will be around for a while and evolve as well. Greater still if different versions of the pros are sold as well. We all win.

Well the mockup is really more for discussion here to see how people feel about a reduced bezel iPad.

A keyboard in portrait mode is a little weird. It would require smart connectors on both edges. I can maybe see it working if you take an iPad w the keyboard in landscape mode and rotate it to portrait without moving the keyboard (i.e. there is a wide base supporting the portrait iPad) - in which case the keyboard width is still locked to the length of the long edge of the iPad.

I don't see a point in it though.

You may feel that way, but most people will interpret it as "without bezels". To compare and contrast
  • careless: without care
  • doubtless: without a doubt
  • endless: without end
  • fearless: without fear
  • helpless: without any ability to help yourself
  • homeless: without a home
  • hopeless: without hope
  • restless: without being able to feel restful (i.e. agitated)
  • tasteless: without taste
  • useless: without use
It's not hard to see how people see the word "bezel-less" and think - without bezels.

Somebody in another thread had a decent explanation. TWO smart connectors. One in landscape for the keyboard. One in portrait that’s also magnetic as a pencil charger/holder. Nothing else makes sense. It’d be daft to use a keyboard in portrait only. Heck the larger one will just tip over. It’s rather tall.

Ah yes that would be nice. The current pencil charging via the lightning port is pretty silly right now.
