If you base the idea of bezels on opinions and comments from the iPhone crowd, according to them bezels are hideous, old school, outdated, ugly... to name a few. Are the same people who are buying the X now looking down on the iPad crowd in disbelief that a bezel of some sort is needed?

I’m in both crowds.. I love my iPhone and iPads equally.

And at this point, I want my iPad to be as stream lined as my iPhone, period.

I have a mini and a 12.9. On the 12.9 the bezels are perfect for me as is. The way I hold and use it the bezels would be worse if they were any smaller or bigger. On the mini, the side bezels are too thin to try to hold it securely one-handed in portrait. Touch rejection is not always dependable and even if it was, I don’t like covering up any part of the screen. I would either prefer bigger side bezels or for the whole device to shrink so that I can comfortably hold both sides with one hand. But either way I’d like for top and bottom bezels to remain as they are.

For both devices, I prefer having thick bezels at least on top and bottom for general picking up and handling. For quickly grabbing, especially if the iPad is face down, I prefer not having to think about whether there is a button on the edge of the screen that I might be pressing—because touch rejection can’t know the difference between a thumb pinch and a thumb long press because there’s no physical difference—or whether or not touch rejection will succeed at all. It’s just one more thing that can go wrong.

I think the main advantage of reducing bezels is that it looks cooler. You get ever so slightly more compact form factor (especially if maintaining same 4:3 aspect ratio, which I would want). But for the reasons I stated, in doing so it would reduce much more functionality for me than I would gain.

(And I use my devices case-less. I don’t believe we should have to rely on accessories to make our devices usable.)

The ipad mini and 10.5” ipad pro already have VERY thin side bezels and there is no problem with fingers getting in the way.

There is a problem for me! See above.

Prime example that you can't please all of the people all of the time :)

I trust Apple will come to a reasonable solution, but it will be impossible to please everyone.

This complaint has always seemed a bit weird to me. Is it because unlike me, most people don’t use some sort of protective cover for they’re shiny new, expensive iPad? It was the first thing I bought. Because of the edge of the case itself, when I hold my iPad I rarely touch the screen other than to purposely tap on it. Bezeless (and its larger screen) would be welcomed.

This is my thought as well, I have a case on IPP 10.5 and when I hold it, it's the case I'm touching not the bezel.
I'd love a bigger screen in the same body as the current 10.5"

I was expecting some pictures of how people currently hold their iPads. Bezeless seems unrealistic, but very small bezels would be sexy AF. The 10.5" bezel applied all the way around would be good enough for me.

Id personally have no problems with bezeless though. Not sure the negative of having your finger on the screen. As it is with my mini, I do this, but Apple has done something in the software that rejects that touch as the primary touch. So I see no problems with that.

Reduced bezels are more or less confirmed at this point.

The proposed thinner bezels will be enough for me to hold the thing.

What would help even further is if the weight were reduced, because you're going to have a less secure grip of the iPad due to the thinner bezels.

I'll also have a case, which adds more weight, so to minimise the chance of dropping the device with reduced bezels, weight becomes important to me.
