When you see it listed out like that its easy to see why what on first sight isn't a lot different is so much cheaper. I hadn't actually realised 3D touch wasnt on the XR. I know most people on here slate that feature but I wouldn't want a phone without it now.

I’ve always liked and used 3D Touch, and now it’s more useful than ever with the Shortcuts app. Finally I can switch WiFi on and off again properly with a minimum of fuss.

Whut?
I assume you meant Force Touch?

I know I’m being technical, but that’s part of who I am:

3D Touch is exclusive to the iPhone, although, Force touch is exclusive is an official moniker for the Apple Watch. They simply execute the same type of functionality however.

I still don’t know if I even have a clue what 3D Touch is or if I ever actually use it on my phone.

You’re not alone. Many average consumers that have 3D Touch capability on their iPhones have no idea what it does, and that is Apple‘s fault, because they really didn’t explain this feature very well aside from the iPhone 6S keynote.

Essentially touching the Phone dispay by half pressure to a stock application, it will not fully open application, but display short cuts and how you can navigate certain parts of the Application without having to open it fully. This is more convenient for briefly checking emails, photos and text messages. Once you learn how to execute 3D Touch, I find it very useful.

Here is a quick video showing the 3D Touch capabilities:

I think this is compared to the X. I think the Xr is also getting thr better charging.

Nope. Watch the reveal carefully...
They ONLY mention “advanced wireless charging” on the XS & XS Max models
[doublepost=1540086054][/doublepost]
How so? I didn’t realize there was a difference.

It sounds like it’s not going up to 10w from 7.5w, but rather, a larger/thicker coil- to allow better transfer & less of the finicky nature in placement on the Qi charging pad.

What is the shortcuts app? I have seen a couple mentions of this in the forums. No clue what it is or does.

XR has a 1400:1 contrast ratio, The XS's OLED display has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

Both have the same 625 cd/m² max brightness.

XR resolution of 1792 x 828 with 326 pixels per inch

The iPhone XS 2436 x 1125 resolution with 458 pixels per inch, while the iPhone XS Max is 2688 x 1242 resolution, also with 458 pixels per inch

Shortcuts by Apple
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/shortcuts/id915249334?mt=8

I’m not a super user of it by any means, but have a few that are useful, some of which via 3D Touch. Namely

-turning on/off WiFi completely, like in older versions of iOS, without leaving the home screen
-play/pausing podcasts without leaving the home screen
-a go home/go to work Shortcut that immediately starts Maps and directs me to location

This barely scratches the surface.

I am curious how two very different screen technologies can produce the same brightness. The contrast ratio is the difference in light emitting from the lightest and the darkest pixel. Since the max brightness is the same, the different ratio is only because LCDs can’t produce deep blacks, right?

To expand on the 2x telephoto lens difference...

Pro for Xr:
- Can do wider angle portrait mode

Pro for Xs:
- Can do portrait mode for inanimate objects
- Better optical zoom

This is my only concern with the XR as I travel most of the year, I'd love to use portrait modes on non human objects :(. Anyone else hoping the XR can still take it 'unofficially'?

I did not understand this massive outcry regarding the display of the Xr. It gets the brand new Japan Display LCD with groundbreaking LCD technology. Everything over 326 PPI unnecessary in (and for) my eyes. Some bullet points regarding this:

Cons Xs/Xs max
  • They use a Pen Tile matrix with redundant green sub-pixels to compensate the short lifespan of these LEDs. Because of this they need to do subpixel anti-aliasing which eats up a lot of the assumed 3x advantage.
  • They use PWM dimming with the OLED displays which can can induce headaches and/or eye strains.
  • The viewing angle for a good colour reproduction is very small. Out of this angle the OLED displays are looking very weird...
  • The Xs has the same 375 points for the more important display width than the 4 year old iPhone 6. So no improvement at all.
  • The Xs Max has the same point resolution (414*896) than the Xr. It is only 6% larger in size. So also no advantage here. Because of the 6% larger display the Xs max (and the Plus iPhones) have to run more than 2x. With 2x they would drop under 326 PPI.
Pros Xr
  • Long lasting LCD tech with best colour reproduction, wide viewing angles and no PWM.
  • Improved point width (414 points) compared to the iPhone 6,7,8, X, Xs but a smaller case than the iPhone Plus and Xs Max
  • 2x with no downsampling like the Plus iPhones and no subpixel anti-aliasing like the OLED iPhones gives a perfectly sharp image with enough resolution to get the "Retina effect" (no visible pixels).
  • 326 PPI 2x has the big advantage of a much lower power consumption than the 3x displays. This results in the best battery life of all iPhones.
  • Smaller bezels and Face ID without the expansive OLED display brings the biggest advantages from the X iPhones to a device that cost more that $400 less than a comparable Xs max (128 GB Xr vs 256 GB Xs Max)

With another app than the standard camera app, yes it can. The question is how good the result will be with only one camera.

XS: no display zoom
XR: display zoom

I returned the X last year because it lacked display zoom, so this is make or break for me. XS vs XR, XR wins on this alone.

XS Max has zoom though and it looked great to me when I tried in store. My choice is Max or XR - I'll compare and decide.

So is 3D Touch available on the XS and XS Max? I’m sure this is a stupid question, but I’m usually full of those.

Only time I actually use 3D Touch is the keyboard trackpad thing. Besides that I have never really used it.

I will miss that when I get the Xr

I woiuldn’t be surprised if that functionality is added as part of a future iOS update. The XR’s portrait mode is made possible strictly via software - thus far, that software only knows how to look for faces. I bet they figure out how to program it to look for other non-human things. We’ll see.

That said, it will never be as good as the dual-camera portrait mode on the XS.

My wife needs a new phone and I'm debating between Xr and Xs. Far and away the most important thing to her is the camera and specifically using portrait mode on subjects. She is an owner/manager at a fashion boutique and takes pictures of people modelling clothing all day long. She also does a ton of video on Facebook and Instagram

Since she uses this for business the cost difference isn't the main factor but rather than better quality pictures and videos for posting. The quality of portrait mode is huge to her.

Obviously I would love to save the extra money (especially since we'd be getting either the 128gb or 256gb version) however I do recognize that the cost difference will be easily made up if the camera quality of the Xs is better.

I see most people recommending the Xr over the Xs however for our situation do you think we're better off with the Xs and having the higher end camera technology?

Thanks!
