The XR does portrait via software, the XS via hardware. If portrait mode is as important to your wife as you outline, buying the XS is a no brainer.

My wife needs a new phone and I'm debating between Xr and Xs. Far and away the most important thing to her is the camera and specifically using portrait mode on subjects. She is an owner/manager at a fashion boutique and takes pictures of people modelling clothing all day long. She also does a ton of video on Facebook and Instagram

Since she uses this for business the cost difference isn't the main factor but rather than better quality pictures and videos for posting. The quality of portrait mode is huge to her.

Obviously I would love to save the extra money (especially since we'd be getting either the 128gb or 256gb version) however I do recognize that the cost difference will be easily made up if the camera quality of the Xs is better.

I see most people recommending the Xr over the Xs however for our situation do you think we're better off with the Xs and having the higher end camera technology?

Thanks!
Don’t ever skimp for business endeavors. I’m getting the Xr and would recommend it to most “average joes”, but in your case, the bump in camera quality of the Xs would make a big difference, get the Xs!

Long lasting LCD tech with best colour reproduction, wide viewing angles and no PWM.
Just want to mention: we unfortunately don't know for sure that the XR is PWM-free. It's apparently using the same screen tech as the LG G7, which has PWM at 1,174Hz visible at 42% brightness and below. Considering that Apple has never used PWM on their LCD models before, I'm still hopeful that the XR won't either, but we won't know for sure until launch.

Nice post. I am curious to see that if it does have any type of pulse width modulation concerns for other users, and I didn’t know that shares the same screen technology the LG G7 Did.

As an XS Max owner, I really am looking forward to seeing what other users think of the XR once they receive it.

Thanks for the replies. Went and picked up an Xs Max. Definitely agreed that based on her needs getting the Xs made sense over the Xr.

Still trying to figure out how we were agreed at home that the Xs made the most sense yet somehow at the store that turned into walking out with the Max...

There is quite a long thread of people who will dispute the claim of XS working better with a weaker signal.

Yes, there is also a bug that’s causing slow transfer. I don’t think we really know yet what the final difference will be. So far, my iPhone XS seems to get the same or worse signal than my iPhone 7, which is disappointing.

Can someone explain in more detail the antenna differences and the practical real world impact?

Is the XR gimped, or is the XS improved over traditional implementations?

My experience bears out the FCC test data. I work in very rural areas that are ten miles for the nearest paved road. The XR has the best reception I have ever seen in low signal areas. The XR maintained a LTE connection when other phones dropped to 3g and couldn’t place a call on the same network. The XS seems to be entirely focused on throughput on high frequency bands such as band 4 (1700 MHz). But it’s the low frequency bands (700 MHz) like bands 12, 13,14 that penetrate buildings and travel long distances in rural areas. The FCC testing summarized by www.wiwavelengths.com suggests the XR has better reception in low signal areas.

Also, the XR battery life is amazing (24 hours with ease) and the speakers and camera are both outstanding.

Note that PC Magazine only tested LTE Band 4 (1700 MHz), a high frequency band that has high throughput but doesn’t penetrate buildings or travel long distances like low frequency bands (600-700 MHz).

Wow I just ordered the excess but due to everything I’m reading about poor reception or signal I think I will change to the XR model .

Good list.

I think it should be added that for only £50/$50 dollars, one can upgrade the memory of the R for not a lot of money.

I've not seen any good will thrown at us for some time. For many, the 64 isn't going to be enough while the 256 is overkill, but 128 is a nice compromise.

I bought my R for this reason; hefty usage for music and photos and plenty of space for books. With my X I always had around 50GB used and sometimes had to cull portions of my media.

My XS Max is still my main phone though due to its screen size and it's not being a Samsung or any other brand. People call me crazy for owning both but I love my Apple devices

The XS signal/reception did receive an update patch to help resolve that, and not everybody is affected by this. I can say I never had a reception issue with my XS Max in my area. But that’s depend on where you are as well, as it will vary for everyone.
