I believe that turbo speed is not applicable for all cores. And for 2887 it maintains significantly higher clock speed for more cores than 2667. And my first hand experience with software development tasks on Mac Pro 2013 is that 4 fast cores performs almost same as 12 slow cores.

So I think the 2887 may be best CPU for Mac Pro 2013

I am having an issue with the E5-2687W v2 in a Mac Pro (Late 2013). In Apple Service Diagnostics (ASD 3S159) every test is passing in both ASD EFI and ASD OS except for the ‘Thermal Interface’ test. Is anyone able to pass ‘Thermal Interface’ test with an E5-2687W v2 installed? If not then what about stock?

update from my previous post - looks like the asd os thermal interface test is failing because of a gpu issue. a gpu issue specific to my setup. so ignore that. though i would still be gracious if anyone sporting a 2687w would run the asd os thermal interface test and report back results.

separately, after extensive burn-in testing with all combination of cores, with turbo boost disabled and then run all tests again with turbo boost enabled, the power supplied to the processor never goes over 130 watts, for all processors including e5-2687w v2.

this ties everything in a nice bow. limiting the power to 130 watts also means limiting the thermal heat to the equivalent 130 tdp. the baseline speed is still 3.4 ghz even when using all cores (it doesn’t appear to throttle based on the electrical limitation though it might slightly, like by 100 mhz). turbo boost never gets to 4 ghz, maybe up to 3.86 ghz, but i say that is a fair trade-off for a higher base clock.

for this particular context it turns out that info is quasi-farce. in my testing the mac pro (late 2013), the power supplied to the e5-2687w v2 never went above 130 watts which also limits the heat to the equivalent 130 tdp. same maximum heat rating but 2687 has higher base clock. best of both worlds!
