I will be waiting for the second gen. I should imagine that apple will have an all 3G lineup without the premium built into the price. Hopefully a new processor and a front facing camera.

I can see apple wants to see how the data 3G aspect plays out in terms of consumer demand. there is no need for apple to charge such a ridiculous premium when the hardware is only a fraction of what they charge plus the kickbacks from data companies.

Apple is making a fortune out of this one.

Buy a Mifi device from 3 (three). £49 for the device and you can get PAYG bundles

That's what I'm going to do if I ever need 3g access. It's far cheaper and can hook up to multiple devices rather than just the ipad.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the UK prices. I'll get the 32gb version I think.

Not happy about the prices for 3g at all. However I still want one.. and probs will go for the 16gb 3G.

Can anyone tell me if you buy a 3G version must you take out a monthly contract? or can you simply add ur own micro sim card in at a later date and do a pay as you go thing?

you can just get a micro sim late and do PAYG!

I think ill take the plunge on a 64gb 3G! :)

Will we be able to reserve for store pick-up on monday?

I dont really wonna pay that much for an ipad... that price for a 64gb means I wouldnt be too far off getting a brand new imac... (with uni student discount)

I think il either get a 16gb 3G or a 32gb wifi (and get one of those mifi devices)

Don't forget that come June (just 1 week later!!) you'll be wanting the iPhone 4 as well - lol

I'm undecided which one to get now.

Haha! I totally forgot I will need like £200 for my new iPhone in june! :( :( I think I may pass on the iPad for now then!

Any details on the specific time of release 9am or 5pm, other?

I only ask as i have flight to leave London that day (seeing Black Eyed Peas night before!!!). I could move flight back if it meant i could prebook for early morning London store pickup. Would home order if later than day? Hey, its the difference between having something to play with in the airport waiting room, and inflight!!!

Thanks for any info. It will be helpful to decide how i pre-order, as i am guessing they wont let you cancel a pre-order.

Not surprise with the prices. I really dunno whether to get a 3g or wifi. But I want news and twitter on the go.

Just for those thinking about Three's MiFi, I've been using mine for a couple of days with my iPod touch and Macbook, and it's really pretty amazing. I've never used truely mobile internet, but this rocks. It's your own wifi hotspot! Works a treat and has very good speeds. Definately don't need a 3G iPad now.

I'm intrigued by the MiFi. How's the battery life, and how is the internet compared to the 3G speeds on an iPhone?

Unbelievable Price

I'm not paying a one hundred pound premium over the US, that's utterly ridiculous. I was planning on getting 16GB Wifi Model, not any more due to the unbelievable pricing Apple plays around with.

Did you not read this thread, or are you just being deliberately obtuse?

Our VAT accounts for most of the difference. The US figure excludes sales tax (different from state to state) which is in place instead of VAT.

Erm not really.

[Copy pasting my post from a different forum]

Sales Tax is their version of Value Added Tax. The only difference is that they vary the amount around the USA (whereas we're fixed at 17.5%) and consequently retailers always advertise the ex-tax price.

So, using Raleigh in North Carolina (as that's where my source is currently) the $829 excluding Sales Tax would actually be $893.25 including sales tax. In the UK the price for the same (it's not even like a laptop where they change the keyboard) 64GB 3G iPad is £594.89 excluding Value Added Tax and £699 including Value Added Tax.

Back at the beginning of the week the exchange rate was 1.53 but right now it's 1.47 (yes, today we reached a one year low - thankyou government/voters).

$893.25 converted at 1.47835 (how it closed at 17:47:09 UTC) is £604.22, which is less than £699.

Ok so lets to some maths...what exchange rate did Apple peg the iPad at. Lets take the example of the 16GB Wifi model £429/$499

From the UK price we take out VAT to get the price charged by Apple:

£429/1.175 = £365.11

And the exchange rate:

$499/£365.11 = 1.36 $/£

And the other Wifi models

32GB Wifi
$599/(£499/1.175) = 1.41 $/£

64GB Wifi
$699/(£599/1.175) = 1.37 $/£

With the £ hitting as low as 1.44 and projected to go a low at 1.35, these seem like very realistic prices. Apple have factored in the volatility of the currency and its also important to remember that transport and import costs are not factored into this conversion.

Wow that flexed my brain there...felt like Jeremy Vine and his swing-o-meter.

And european pricing is as I expected

€499 16 wifi
€599 32 wifi
€699 64 wifi

€599 16 wifi + 3G
€699 32 wifi + 3G
€799 64 wifi + 3G

I imported mine from the states, and even with the expense of shipping and ebay seller profit margins, my 64gb Wifi was still cheaper than the retail price here.... phew ;):)

Really? See, this is what I don't get. These European prices show the price difference between the 16GB and 32GB models as being the same as the price difference between the 32GB and 64GB models (€100). In the US, they have the same situation. The price difference between the two lower models is the same as the price difference between the two higher models. But for the UK, it's a bigger jump to go from 32GB to 64GB, compared to the jump from 16GB to 32GB. How come? We're either:

a. getting charged more for the 16GB
b. getting charged more for the 64GB
c. getting a better deal than everyone else for the 32GB

Anyway, that makes my choice even stranger, as I've decided to preorder a 16GB Wifi-only and a 64GB Wifi-only on Monday. :p

Battery life seems okay - you have to charge it for 12 hours to start with, and there is a little card which explains how your internet usage will determine how long it lasts. I'm taking it out all day tomorrow and will be able to do a proper test. It comes with a mains adaptor, and will also charge via USB.

As for 3G speeds vs the iPhone, I don't know as I don't have an iPhone. However, connecting to the 3G network where I live as I tested the device, it seemed very fast on my iPod touch. The device will connect to 3G or the other service (HD something something?) which is faster (although not available everywhere).

The only issue for Mac users is the modem's control centre software is PC only. You don't actually need it, unless you want to change the modem's name and password, and various other settings that you would find in any other wireless router. However, having changed my login password for My3 online (the web centre where you top up, check your balance, etc), 3 sent me the new password via text message to the modem. To collect this text message you need to use the control centre software, so I actually installed it in Windows via Parallels to get it. While there I changed the modem name and password.

However, like I said, this control centre software is optional. All controls for connecting the wifi and the 3G are on the modem itself.

So far I love it, but I'll report back after a day of use tomorrow.

a and b simultaneously. Reason? My sinusoidal graph says so - teh two curves overlap continuously.

just a little thought.
i love the idea of the mifi units from three.
yes u can use more then 1 device to get internet. (ipad, wifes macbook, and soo on) however u need an extra unit.
50 quid for the unit is not much. but if you think
ipad wifi and ipad 3g is 100quid difference so take the 50quid of the 3g modem leaves you with 50 extra quid.
ipad 3g has also GPS so basically u pay 50quid for a gps unit build in.
i still dont know which way to go. but having everything in one unit is nice and if you want to get push notifications while you on your way with the ipad then the 3g makes more sense since u are always connected to the network.
i dont have an answer for the problem. but i think its to easy to say i just buy the ipad wifi and the mifi unit. u dont have gps (ok u might never use it fair enough) but u have the portability of having it all in one.
greetings to ya all.

ps. if you buy the ipad in the us and pay the max tax (california is 10%) u are still cheaper then ipad in uk (if you dont declare it when u enter UK)
for the saved money u can buy camera connection kit or bag or or or...
however is 100 quid (thats about the amount u pay more for a 64gb wifi) worth having the risk not knowing what will happen with warranty? unless there is a proper statement that u have worldwide warranty, buying one in the states is a little risky.

The difference between 16gb and 32gb is 16gb
The difference between 32gb and 64gb is 32gb
Therefore it kinda makes sense that it would cost more for a 32gb jump than a 16gb jump.
Am I missing something?

I'm not sure I understand you. I have one MiFi unit. Yesterday I had two iMacs, a Macbook, and an iPod touch all connected to it simultaneously and using the internet via 3G. I'm not sure what the maximum number of connections is, but like any wireless router, the MiFi modem can clearly be shared between several devices at once.

Yes you're right. 32GB isn't smack in the middle between 16GB and 64GB. However, all the other countries so far seem to have been priced as iffhat were the case. Our price makes sense, but I'm curious as to why it's different elsewhere. It's common for a company to offer bigger upgrades at the same price as lower upgrades because it encourages people to buy more expensive models. It's your reward for going for the best one. The Euro prices show 100 Euros between each model. The US is the same. It makes going for the the mos expensive model the best deal, as for someone getting a 64GB I costs them the same for an extra 32GB as an extra 16GB would cost someone going for the 32GB. By choosing a higher model, there's better value for
money.

But here in the UK, there's less of an incentive for going higher. I'm still getting a 16GB and 64GB, but I think 32GB will sell really well in UK because it's one a bit more expensive than the 16GB but a lot cheaper than the 64GB.
