For the nexus 5x it is under the front facing speaker grill. There is a next phone, can't recall the model and it is beneath the speaker grill you use for calls. Basically the speaker grill have holes for sound to come through, beneath it is an LED. When it illuminates it shines through the speaker grill holes. You should be able to YouTube nexus 5x notification light go see an example.

If the iPhone had ambient display then the notification light would not be needed as much (although still useful in some cases). However the iPhone don't use either. I think the apple would more go for ambient display, however based on reports, that won't be a possibility until 2018.

Thank you. I'll go look at that.

I'd rather not include the light (my Nexus has it disabled) but I believe there are more creative implementations

Like what? The iPhone covers sound, vibration and visuals. A simple LED indicator can tell you so much without having to turn the display on. It can give you peace of the mind if you know that the last notification you received is just something on Facebook and not an important message. On my BlackBerry I used different colours for different notification types and for important people. My iPhone is generally on silent mode (I dislike these irritating noises in public, even in private areas where other people are around) and I turned vibration off. I have to turn the screen on to see whether something is relevant or not or whether I missed something. Moreover, the display consumes a lot of unnecessary battery when all you want to know is whether you received important notifications. An LED indicator is a perfect substitute that makes all the other three indicators irrelevant, so it's quite important and useful.

Realistically it's been like that on various phones even back in 2011 if not earlier.

Every phone should have only the exact features that I want. Nothing more, nothing less. Every manufacturer should clear their designs with me before building.

That is all. Problem solved.
