Such as? I find nothing useful missing from the UI of stock Android 6.0 coming from an LG G4 and Note5.
Coming from the Moto X 2014 I really missed the Moto Assist (particularly Drive) and Moto Display, which is far, far superior to stock Ambient Display. Indeed, these were contributing factors in my decision to return the 6P.

What is it missing that you need? Qi charging?

If there is one thing missing for me it's built in call blocking. iOS has it, HTC Sense and Touchwiz have had it at least since 4.0 ICS on my GSIII, and then on my M8 on 4.4. Surprisingly BB10 didn't have it that I could see and neither does stock Android. Though you can kind of do it by adding the number as a contact and sending them straight to voicemail, it's not quite the same. I'd tap an annoying number, hit block, and never see it again. So that's one thing that is a few years late and still missing.

Other than that, the stock Google Camera is pretty plain, at the very least they could add an exposure adjustment. But there's third party options for that and the Camera API 2 even allows for RAW photos should you like. So not a big deal there.

I've been with Android since 2.1 Eclair on my HTC Incredible (which is still in use) and it's been great to see it grow. Same with iOS, since 2.1 on my iPod touch. Though it's been funny to see it grow literally in file size. The whole stock ROM for my Incredible is about 160MB, and a stock AOSP based rom like CyanogenMod 7 is right at 90MB. Crazy how we went from that to over 2GB for some ROMS and iOS 8.x and up in a matter of 5 years.

I see threads wanting to leave Apple and reconsider Android. Whatever the case may be, I know one thing is certain. Google and Apple are safe. Forever and ever companies. Like Nintendo being 126-years old and still being relevant. By 2115, people will still use Google. I didn't know about their search until my cousin showed me in 2000 around the time I was still using Yahoo! Search and began to know about Napster. Apple was still irrelevant to me by that point until iPod minis came out. Now these iPhones, they will be around forever like Star Wars, Star Trek, and James Bond. We all won't live long enough to see the final iPhone model and applies to the babies being born today.

Google since 1998 has surprisingly never went through a dark period like Apple had in the mid-1990's. And I think now that Apple is a bigger company than Exxon, I don't see a limit in sight. Every registered MR poster can say they would switch to another mobile OS/ecosystem and Apple would still be rich. In 100 years, our great grandchildren or great great grandchildren will still see Apple product placements. Apple can lose 1% and gain 3% from former Android users a year later. It is an Apple and Google world and we just happen to live in it.

Nothing says civility like 'If I don't need it and can't see the point of it then everyone else can pound sand and do without it.' Thankfully!

Thankfully there are dozens of phone makers who make phones with LED lights. Go buy one of those if that's your MVF.

I know a lot of people disagree, but I feel as though the iPhone could improve immensely with an Ambient Display type implementation. Even on the N6P, where the implementation isn't Apple good, I use it all the time.

I don't think so, but that's because:
A) I keep my phone next to my bed and don't need that crap.
B) I feel the average user would have no clue how to turn it off and would just find it annoying.

Do they run iOS as well?

Nope. They normally run Android.

Here's how I would do it.

  • When the phone is unplugged when the phone senses you move it without pressing any buttons, you get an ambient type display effect where notifications, the time, and the slider are visible.
  • As you swipe to unlock across, the color populates the screen.
  • When the phone is plugged in, the ambient display doesn't work and the ambient display gesture just activates the screen.
That would be minimally invasive, IMHO.

Translated:

A) I don't need it so nobody gets it.
B) We must protect people who are dumb as bricks.

The first is severely intolerant and the second is part of Apple's creative Mission Statement.
