I called Macmall today to order my new 13" Air with 256SSD, 4GB of ram, and 2.13 processor because of the discounts they were offering. They told me the computer should arrive mid-december. Yikes! Told them to cancel my order and I called apple instead. I told them about the savings discount Macmall was offering and they took $200 off the price of the machine!! I should receive it next week. Just a testament to apples amazing service. I was absolutely shocked and thrilled. Can't wait to get my machine.

I cancelled my macmall order and called them. They said they do price "matching", she didn't say anything about $200 off >.> (what did you tell them to give you that?).

However the apple store was down and so she said I'd have to call back in the morning when it's up again because they can't place orders right now :/

I just told them that Macmall was offering a discount price of $100 off total. They took off $200 on mine. It was kind of bizarre, I didn't ask for that much or anything, they just did it, and happily so I might add. Best of luck to you!

She told me that I have to give them the site so that their sales rep can take a screenshot of it and attach it to my order :/

Oh well, we'll see who the person I talk to in the morning is like. Maybe they'll be in the "take $200 off" mood.

$200 is Apple online's max for adjustments. I have received a few imperfect units in the past and kept them in exchange for this exact credit.

Good job!

I just called i bought on launch day, was able to get a 100.00 credit to my debit card.
At first they told me they did not price match, than they looked to give me a accessory for my macbook, they offered a trackpad, and a superdrive.

I used my ED discount too.

I just called too - wanted to see if they can hook me up with 85$ which would be the tax... They said they can't do - what did you guys ask specifically?

Interesting. I've always been told Apple wouldn't do this, precisely to keep the Macmalls, Frys, and Bestbuys happy-- and carrying Apple. I wonder what the wholesale price for a $2000 MBP really is for Macmall?

Hmmm. I'm interested in giving this a shot but the best price I can find on Macmall is $50 off for the top spec 13''. Am I missing something?

You take the link to macmall from appleinsider.com and you get an extra 3% off.

Also I talked to 2 apple people just now, and they both said they can't do this. One said that even if they could, they wouldn't be able to until 2 weeks after the product launches, and no earlier.

The problem I see with some of these discounted links is they seem to mostly apply to common configurations. The moment I change option, like the HI RES antiglare, or the 7200 rpm hard drive, the discount mostly goes away.

End result is that the only savings I have buying through reseller is no sales tax. And my employer has a link for a discount through the apple.com site. So I ended up ordering that way, with sales tax applied, for just $3 more than it would have been through the reseller.

Now, earlier this year when I bought the iPad, going through a reseller was cheaper, if not faster, than through the Apple store. No discount when I originally ordered, and the sales tax savings more than made up for paying shipping. But it wasn't a BTO item either.

I may have gotten such a good deal because I ordered it with the max specs. When I first asked about a price match the apple rep on the phone was like "ummm...are you doing any upgrades?" When I told him I was maxing it out,his tone changed and he seemed eager to do what he could haha.

Is this broken though? When I click from appleinsider.com I see the price for the base 13" is $1221 or thereabouts. Then when I click buy/configure, it jumps up for $1259, essentially negating the 3% savings.

I've tried it both using Safari on my iPad and MBP.

Bingo.
Maxing out anything from Apple is paying premium on parts you could otherwise get a lot cheaper after the fact.

No, not broken. It jumps back up to the normal price in "configure" and then it'll show the savings again in the next page after that.

Jesus, what's up with trying to scam extras and discounts AFTER you have already bought the product?!

I can fully understand leveraging different salespeople against each other to get the best deal out of however many different stores, and then buy the best offer -- but seriously; threatening return of the goods for refund unless they kick a little extra your way after the fact is borderline psychotic.

I run a retail business, and this stuff never ceases to amaze me. And you're lucky you get a pushover rep on the other end, because I instruct all of my sales team to call the bluff and ask for the items returned for full refund. Then that person is blacklisted from future orders, because customers like that are high maintenance and are never worth the dollar to hassle ratio.

A special is a special. A sale is a sale. If you miss one by a day or so, then it's just bad luck. But keep in mind that you never handed over a cent more than you were willing to pay, otherwise you wouldn't have paid for it un the first place and would have waited for a sale!

Sorry for the rant, but the sense of entitlement these days is out of control. Everyone wants something for nothing and they want it yesterday.

While I can understand where you are coming from for people who ALREADY purchased the product (you purchased it obviously Ok at the time with how much you were paying), I don't think badly of anyone for trying to get a deal before ordering it. I simply told the Apple salesman over the phone that I was interested in buying a maxed out 13" Air and that MacMall had a better deal then Apple did at the current time, but that I wanted to buy it from Apple directly to give them my business directly. The fact that the salesman from Apple went out of his way to help assist me with this is just another testament to Apple's customer service. It also pretty much guarantees that I will be going through Apple directly for all of my future Mac purchases. They honestly help themselves in this respect, by netting all of my future business through them directly.

Also, for those interested, my subtotal before tax on the maxed out 13" Air came to $1620. It would have been $1800 otherwise. Also, I think it much easier for them to help cut you a break, when you are buying more than just the base model. The $100 ram and $100 processor upgrades are largely margin for them, so it gives them something to work with. I work at Best Buy selling Macs, and if someone who is buying just a bare computer asks for a discount, it's almost a guaranteed "no." On the other hand, if someone is buying a Mac, Service Plan, and a couple of accessories (which are usually 50% or so profit) we can usually help them out with some discount.

All you have to do is ask, and no one is going to hell for doing so haha.

Any place but here or there....
good to know

I have to play around with the MBAs before I decide to jump, but this is good to know prior to ordering.

While I've never received that kind of discount, Apple have stood by me through numerous returns and I ultimately got a machine that is what I'm used to regarding Apples' product.

I'd see if I could get a discount on a new MBA if the machine winds up being something I can use, because Apple will still get my money over any competitor. MacMall has been nothing but grief for me in the past, so if they can pay back some of that grief through competitive pricing, why not?

I can understand the retail store owners' choice as well, but if folks can get more $ back more power to them.

Nope ... Thanks OP :)

OK, so let me get this straight:

1) You bought the only 4 gig 11" MBA on the planet that was custom-made just for you in Tennessee and shipped to you 1 day after the keynote address.
2) By your own admission in earlier posts, you only paid $949 for this one-of-a-kind netbook after getting the educators discount. This makes you the only educator to purchase a $1039 11" MBA with 4 gig for only $949, thus getting a price $90 LESS than every other mere mortal on the planet, educator or not.
3) Now you call them and say "I need better than mere mortal status....I need another $100 off that price" and they do it.

Now since I know how you claim to have paid for this with $777 in gift cards, that means your net out of pocket for this special edition, made-just-for-you-by-Tennessee-Apple-Gnomes, not available to anyone else on the planet MBA was a mere $62.

Do I have all this correct? Because if so....thats quite the tale.
