This option is for when the phone is unlocked. This shouldn't make a difference as this dictates whether an incoming call takes over your screen while you are using the phone, or if it drops down like a notification banner.

I've been testing it with my mom, but nothing seems to work. We'd only show in a little banner on top of the screen, but nothing else.

She did get my updated contact photo, but I don't see anything from her. No notification in iMessage (after sending messages back and forth) that there's a new photo or whatever. No contact poster when she calls. I think I just see the photo I added for her. I watched her set it up, and we chose "contacts only".

I saw in an apple support forum post to check the icloud website to see if it's syncing there, but it's also not. I still only see the photo I set up for her. I even had her send me *her* contact card via iMessage and joined it with my own for her, but it kept my photo. And I just deleted my contact card for her, and reimported hers, without merging, and I now see her new photo, but still no cards, nothing. I'm giving up for now.

The other thing I've noticed, in regards to my own contact card, is that I have Siri call me "My Lady". Siri added that as a nickname to my own contact card. But when I set up my Mimoji contact poster, it just had my nickname "My Lady" show up. I don't exactly want "My Lady" to show up when I call other people. Nor do I want them to have all the email addresses and phone numbers for my card if I were to Name Drop with someone. But I also don't want to just delete everything from my contact card ...

Doesn't work for me or my friend. One of the features I was looking forward to after apple made it sound like it was a 'Major Update for the Phone App' - you would think they would have nailed it solid before releasing the feature. Even after sooo many betas as well?
We have tried everything from restarting to redesigning to removing contacts and renaming them. nothing works.. seems like a major bug to fix for 17.1 🙄

The photos are getting updated it’s just the contact app isn’t updating with the right pic.

If u go into the particular contact that you know has an updated contact pic and you click custom photo it’ll let u choose a pic but at the same time show u the most recent pic set by the user.

As to why that contact app isn’t updating with that pic is anyone’s guess

This doesn't work on my end.

Also not here. Well I'm getting the small round photo, but the poster never gets updated. Same with my wife who I'm testing this feature with, she only gets small round photo from my contact card, but not the poster image.

I finally got mine to work, but after an additional step. I had my wife's phone next to mine during this process.

As my call came in to my wife's phone, I tapped the banner, then tapped the "i" and then chose "use new contact info" or something to that effect on the next screen while the phone was still ringing.

TLDR: There is an option allowing the receiver of the call to replace their existing contact photo with the new poster which requires a tap or two to get to while the phone is still ringing.

Doesn't work for me. After further fiddling our picture now shows up when calling the other person. However it's very zoomed in and does not have the font I set in the contact poster. This leads me to believe its just a zoomed in picture of the circular picture rather than the actual contact poster.

Were you able to find the option that allows the receiver to choose between the existing old contact photo and the new contact poster? That was the key for me.

It seems, and it makes perfect sense, that for someone who already has a pre-existing photograph in their contacts that the new photograph wouldn’t just replace it, the receiver would have the option.

aww.. thought this would work! Mine just takes me to a page to add my own photos of my friends instead of displaying a message to update to theirs...
I've written to apple using their 'Bugs' page.. hope they will read it and the many others who might have submitted something and release 17.1

In the past, after making any changes to “Share Name and Photo” in Message settings, after texting someone, they would receive a notification in the message asking if they wanted to update the contact for that person. It would give you the choice of updating the name, the photo, or both. Since updating to iOS 17 and making said changes, I’ve yet to see that notification on my wife’s phone or mine. Possibly an Apple server issue?

I'm wondering about this too. Anyone know?

I have my nickname set to something that's not appropriate for anyone outside of close friends, certainly not my general contacts.

Not working for me or my family either. Considering iOS 17 is a fairly small release and this was being teased as one of their "main features", this is big fat L.

I believe I've figured it out!

The contact name on both devices should be exactly the same as the name originally set in the contact poster, including the first name and surname. It seemed to start syncing pictures for me after restarting the device for a few contacts.

I updated my contact poster, waited a couple hours in case it needed to propagate, and then called a friend and asked for a screenshot of what showed up. It showed only my name, not my nickname. So there seems to be a disconnect between what the preview shows and what actually shows on the other side. Which is good in this case, even if confusing and user-unfriendly.

Mixed success here. My daughter and I are each on iOS 17; we've each restarted since then; we've each deleted our original contact cards and redone them; we've iMessaged each other. We noted that my contact had a different first name listed than her "Me" card, and I changed it to match. We have each tried changing to Full Screen for incoming calls.

When we do FaceDrop, on my phone my poster shows up, with the "Receive only" and "Share" buttons as expected. On her phone, there is only a "Receive" and a note that she should complete the creation of her poster, which she has. Our small-icon contact phots (such as in Messages) HAVE updated.

EDIT: As I was typing this, suddenly now our contact posters are appearing on each others' phones when we dial. When we initiate a FaceDrop, it STILL does not give her the opportunity to share, only to receive, and it doesn't display her poster, as if she hasn't finished it.

Randomly started to work for me now but honestly, it’s so strange to set up and there isn’t even a pop up appearing anywhere to make people aware of this new functionality (as far as I remember), I don’t think anyone I know will actually set this up as they simply don’t even know about it.

My husband and I experienced the same issue and believe we have solved it! We believe all devices need to be updated to iOS 17 in order to work accurately! He had updated his iPad to ios17 before updating his phone and I had not updated iPad at time of incident - I had no issue seeing his contact poster once he created it but he could not view mine! Once I updated my iPad to ios17 we had no further issues. I hope this helps!

When I called my wife, my name showed up as the nickname that she has for me, rather than any nickname I might have on my own contact card.

Might just be coincidence. Everything updated here has been updated and the issue persists
