I switched from iOS to Android when I had three iPhone 5Ss, all with issues (that's another story).

I've tried lots and lots of Android phones (I review them) so I have a good experience with the platform as a whole.

On the whole, these days, I think Android is better but the issue is that you may not see how much better it is if you buy from a manufacturer that skins the hell out of Android, ahem *Samsung* ahem. The other issue is slow updates; unless you buy a Nexus you're going to be waiting a while, although it is getting better.

There are still some weird quirks with Android too that just don't exist on iOS. iOS is missing a lot of stuff that I like on Android but everything on iOS works smoothly whereas there are some Android features that work fine, they're just not as smooth somehow.

Really iOS is the smoother OS and is better for simplicity. Android is the smarter OS and is getting smoother but it is still not quite up to iOS.

whats the difference between the two?

iMessage is a way of sending texts and receiving texts on your Mac. So far, Hangouts does nothing of the sort. I even have a Chromebook, and nothing of the sort. It just allows me to text from the same app that I can message people via Google's messenger.

Does that allow SMS as well? I'm currently using pushbullet, but if it available natively if I use hangouts, then I'll probably switch.

Also, for switching to android, it would be best if we had an idea of your work flow and how you use each device. For all we know, a windows phone and kindle tablet may work best for you.

Yes it does

Really? Sweet, I'm going to have to try this out tonight. Thanks.

I believe it will send SMS but from a google voice number, not from your carrier (mobile phone number).

I use it all the time for SMS. You need to change the setting to accept. both sms and data. Click on the sms up at top of google hangouts

I meant on the Chromebook. I just checked again, no SMS toggle on my Chromebook's hangouts.

Just do it. You really won't know until you try. Just dump all of it and break away from the chained ecosystem. While I still have iOS devices around, I left it as my daily driver about 3+ years ago.

My current setup is Android and Windows or WinDroid like I like to call it. They seem to complement better for me.

Is Sprint blocking it, then? Because I'm trying to send an SMS message using my Sprint Number on my Chromebook. Hangouts has everyone on my Google Plus friends list, but that's it. When I manually put in the number to search for it, it says "call", which likely uses my GVoice Number.

Voice calling from your desktop. The app now has all the video and voice features you’re used to in Hangouts. We recently announced you can make phone calls to any number in the world (via Hangouts dialer) and now you can do this right from your desktop. If you use Google Voice, the app includes complete Google Voice support, so you can make and receive calls, and get your voicemails and SMS messages directly in Hangouts.

Use Hangouts to keep in touch. Message friends, start free video or voice calls, and hop on a conversation with one person or a group. Say more with photos, stickers, and emoji.
● Send and receive both Hangouts and text messages (SMS/MMS) and easily switch between message types.
● Include all your friends with group chats for up to 100 people.
● Say more with photos, maps, emoji, stickers, and animated GIFs.
● Turn any conversation into a free group video call with up to 10 friends.
● Call any phone number in the world (and all calls to other Hangouts users are free!).
Connect your Google Voice account for phone number, SMS, and voicemail integration.
● Keep in touch with friends across Android, iOS, and the web, and sync chats across all your devices.
● Message friends anytime, even if they’re offline.

This is what I'm finding.

Once I gave up and integrated my number with Google Voice, which apparently Sprint is all aboard with, I gained the ability to change Hangouts to get texts.
