Yes hangout can do both SMS and data messages
A quick search and came across Google blog about it:

"Voice calling from your desktop.*The app now has all the video and voice features you’re used to in Hangouts. We recently announced you can make phone calls to any number in the world (via*Hangouts dialer) and now you can do this right from your desktop. *If you use Google Voice, the app includes complete Google Voice support, so you can make and receive calls, and get your voicemails and SMS messages directly in Hangouts."

Again, I don't think its possible; you still need Google voice.

Hello,

After being an Apple nerd for 9 years, I was thinking about dumping my iPhones, iPads and iMac to Android and Windows. The reasons can't be discussed here but lets just say Apple is headed in a direction I don't want to go.

First, for those who went from iOS to Android, what were some of your challenges? What do you miss from iOS?

Since I just purchased my 5K iMac, that will obviously remain for a little while so I was thinking about first switching out my mobile devices (iPads, iPhones). The iMac will probably be the last piece of the puzzle I dump. What sort of issues should I expect running Android devices with iTunes and iPhoto on the iMac? Which Android mobile devices do you suggest?

Thanks for the help. I really like Apple products but ever since Steve Jobs passed things just haven't been the same.
I work and live in a Multi-Platform environment where everything is constantly in sync and backed up.

iOS / Android / Windows / OS X / Linux / Unix

I really enjoy all that Android can do, it's my primary Smartphone, my iPhone 6 Plus being secondary. All the computers, tablets, phones I have play smoothly together. It works out very well.

You'll enjoy Android a lot, just remember it's different thus you must learn it, just like anyone switching to OS X from Windows.

Been following this Hangouts discussion with interest, however until Chrome gets extensions or capabilities similar to NoSquint and All-In-One-Toolbar available in Firefox I can't fully embrace it. The 'zoom text only' feature of NoSquint is particularly essential for my older eyes. Frustrating because I'd really like to utilize the features/integration of Chrome.

This.

My Stepdad and I were talking the other night about iPhone and how much we hate them and we both used them since the first gen. Personally, I don't hate iPhones as I've owned plenty of them. I just don't like iOS after getting used to Android. Without a doubt, iOS' apps is much stronger than Windows Phone. And my brother ended up giving me his black 32 GB iPhone 5 yesterday after wanting to use my Mom's white 16 GB iPhone 5 for the not so much degraded battery life.

I usually get handed down all the old iPhones and sell them. I just feel it is more secondary to me as it doesn't have universal features like Bluetooth data transfer to other OSes or having sd slot. If someone is so invested in the ecosystem like owning a variety of Apple products including Macs, then I can see why many will never leave iPhone as it is more cohesive together. For me, I will play around and jailbreak this iPhone 5 I just got and then sell it off within a month. Apple is like Nintendo to me. I don't love either, per se. But I own plenty of iPhones like Nintendo home consoles.

I was an Apple nerd for over 20 years and switched to Windows. Yes, we are out there. :)

In all honesty, unless you absolutely require specific applications that are unavailable on OS X or vice versa, there is no substantive difference between the operating systems (or "build quality" for laptops) for personal use. In my opinion, I think all you are doing by going all Apple is paying an extra tax for cosmetics.

I will say that my wife's iPhone 6 has a nice camera, but there are other phones out there that match or exceed the camera now.

I know this is an old thread, so hope your still around and if not then maybe other folks will help.

I will be switching to android sometime after the Galaxy Note 7 comes out. My wife will keep her iPhone so I need a way to make sure out calendar and contacts stay in sync. What is the best way to do this.

Ideally the wife would still use the stok iOS calendar and contacts app. I am the person who keeps our calendar and contacts updated so I would like to be able to do that from the android phone.

Any thoughts.

I do this now for iphones, iMac, MBP and 3 Android phones. I exported all my contacts and calendar to Google. Then set that as the source for all my devices. I make one change and it syncs to ALL OF MY DEVICES! It's so easy this way.

From my note I can update the Google contacts or calendar and that change will be reflected in the stock iOS contacts or calendar on my wife's phone (and vice versa)

Yep...that is how it would work. This is the setup I have in my mixed environment of Apple and Android devices.

I am now transitioning to an Android device for a really boring reason, but I'm kind of excited. I hate to say it but the iPhone has become sort of bleh.

Here's my big problem. I find Google detestable. Apple may be boring, but I can't trust anything Google. I wish there was a real open source alternative.

I have as much trust for one as I have for the other so for me its a push.

I'm using tiny calendar and it syncs all my apple calendars on my S7 edge and it works perfectly.

I had thought that, too, but then realized I had been using Gmail for years, my husband had our family calendar synced up via Google calendar and had me store extra photos and video on Google Drive. I'm also on FB. I gave up my privacy and identity ages ago. None of that bothers me half so much as all the things anybody can already find out about me via public records made available on the Internet, like name, every place I've ever lived, age, etc. I would have to move, dump all of my friends and family and take on a fake name that I would not change to officially, and make all new friends under that name to regain any semblance of "privacy". And then I guess I would be living as sort of an avatar of myself.

That horse done left through the barn door that was opened when public records went online. And all those savings club cards from the grocery already cooked my goose, too.

I tried to make the switch to android and the s7 edge is an awesome phone. However, I did not want to break the apple ecosystem since my computer is a MacBook Pro. I've yet to find a Windows alternative that is even close to the mbp. I tried the surface pro 4 and the battery life sucks and it gets hot. To me the advantages of being in the ecosystem outweigh the benefits android has over iOS.
