I think this depends on what profile the mkv video was originally encoded with.. i.e. most mkv's I have seen have been High@L5.1 but the AppleTv can only support Main@L3.1 or 4.1 - If I am not mistaken?

Is this a hardware or software limitation of the Apple TV? Seems like it would be hardware.

If you encoding using HandBrake 0.9.3 and it is an MKV to MP4 conversion, HB will crash you need an SVN for it to be a success.
Sorry but what is SVN?, I'm having the same problem every time I try to convert an MKV file to MP4, not sure what's making HB crash :(... please any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance... :)

It's compiling a newer version than the current stable release. I tried but got "The application handbrake is not supported on this architecture" on my MBP so I did something wrong...

I compile a version once a month or so, you just need to follow the guide on the handbrake website. And remember that you must have yasm installed.
The svn works really well, very stable, and has a nice new interface for "picture settings" :)

The build system was recently changed, so the guide on the website is out of date. Check the doc/ directory after downloading the latest revision from SVN for build details.

Also, remember SVN builds are unsupported by the Handbrake team.

Why convert MKV files? That will cause some lose of quality in image and sound. It also has numerous features that AVI lacks.

The objective was to make it suitable for the Apple TV.

Also, I haven't found much easy way to do this.

It's very easy. Just open it in Handbrake and let it do its thing.

A Windows solution is really unnecessary.

Here is a guide from google search and it may help:

im sorry but everything you said is just plain wrong.. the only way to play mkv files is to convert them to mp4, you cannot passthrough and that link you provided converts the files anyway! it also shows software that is shareware.. we have handbrake..

so let me think.. waste time with crappy software or use freeware??? hmmmmmm

Unless Handbrake crashes 90% of the time :(

0.9.3? not using an SVN?

On a side note, it won't use the bitrate I want it to nor will it use the size restriction I want it at, I don't want HB to decide to cut the thing in half and I only find out after I have spent 24+hrs encoding from Blu-ray.

Apple TV and video files

I found it hardly usable to convert video files to quicktime or appletv format. Of course u can use handbrake and so on. However, then I loose a lot of info. Therefore I switched to Xbox Media Center (xbmc) which ports to atv!! Xbmc supports almost all codecs and is very user friendly.

It is fantastic. Pushes all my DVD's (and other formats) to HD 1020p quality and digital output. It works together with the apple remote. I use my Apple TV to stream DVD's which are stored on my 500GB Time Capsule and a 42 inch plasma.

See www.xbmc.org for more info. Don't forget: it is FREE

The only disadvantage I can think of is the upgrades of the ATV firmware. Then sometimes I have to consult XBMC fora to solve some issues (especially when introducing ATV 3.0). Luckily XBMC is supported by a very active support group!

Ok guys, got a new version of the script out. Fixed some deprecation warnings and added a 'Fix Audio' feature for those files where the audio comes out as static.

Have fun and have a happy holidays... when it gets here ;)

I'm confused, with the GUI script do we still need to install the four (hexedit, mpeg4ip, ffmpeg, mkvtoolnix) tools?

I get this error (see attachment) while using the GUI with a large (25GB) .mkv

I just wanted to comment that for HD mkvs its also manditory to use the SVN of handbrake.

The official release worked for a few months but with new HD movies being made the conversion went to crap when played on the AppleTV. I had huge stuttering issues and jpeg / macro blocking. Overall just a very crummy experience that I just wouldnt watch.

After updating to a version only a few days old I havent had an issue with movies that looked terrible with the stable release.

I was almost about to get rid of the AppleTV because the conversions were playing perfectly on my computer but terrible on the TV. So I just figured it was hardware. Its just that the new presets and ways that it handles HD video have been greatly improved and everyone wanting HD content should update to a version past 0.9.4

I submit MKVTools and it's one click conversion. It extracts the video, converts 5.1 DTS or AC3 to 5.1 AAC and remuxes it into a MP4 file.

Do you extract the audio and video then drop the files together in the 'MP4 Video' under the tools tab to mux them together? or is there a one click way?

I've had no success with muxing my files to MP4 with MKVTools so far.

Sorry one click conversion is in the beta.

Drop the MKV file, select the video and audio tracks, click your preset and click "Go".

Using 'Quick Conversions' encodes the video correct? I'm looking to convert the audio to .aac and keep the untouched .h264 video than mux them together to .MP4

or is this what is happening when I click 'go' like you said?

That is what happens when you click go. You will see that three steps take place. First, the video is extracted (happens very quickly because no encoding takes place), the audio is converted to 5.1 AAC and the tracks are muxed together into a .MP4 file. I do this for my PS3 and it works flawlessly. Since it is a beta, I have run into a couple of problems, but I expect those to be ironed out eventually.
